Chapter 1: Odd Day

Chapter Text

“What.” Akito stared at Toya.

“I’m sorry Akito, I’ll be busy at lunch for the rest of the week.” Toya apologised. He had stupid library duties, and wouldn’t be able to spend lunch with Akito at all this week.

Akito tried his absolute best to conceal the pout forming on his lips, but he really was annoyed. He didn’t really have anyone else to hang out with in general, let alone at lunch. No way he was going to spend it wish An and listen to her gush about her ‘awesome new classmate Nene’ that she definitely, 100% had a crush on, for the entirety of lunch, for a whole week straight. Absolutely no way. And he was definitely not going to even entertain the idea of seeking out Akiyama and never living down the fact that he went looking for her to ask her to eat lunch with him.

His only real option was to eat alone and bear with it for the next week, however boring and, admittedly, pathetic it was.

So, Akito put on a brave face, told Toya it’ll be fine, and sent him on his way to the library.

Akito sat with himself at the lunch table for about five minutes before deciding sitting here alone just made him look sad, and he didn’t want some random person coming up and attempting to start a conversation, so he left the building and went in search of a quiet place, where he could eat alone without interruption, out in the court yard.

As Akito walks he shuffles around in his lunch box to see what he has today. Ena’s on one of her motivational kicks, she’s been trying to make Akito bentos but her cooking skills could rival Toyas. There’s nothing special anyways, more specifically, nothing sweet. Akito groans lightly as he walks down to a quiet corner shaded by a tree.

“Ah! Akito!”

No. No no no no.

Akito looks up, face full of dread as his worst nightmare comes true.

In all his grumbling he’s managed to stumble upon the one person he couldn’t even imagine spending any time with, ever, not just lunch.

Oddball number one himself, Tsukasa Tenma.

Akito attempts to make an escape but Tsukasa already has him trapped.

“You alone? Why not come sit with your senpai! There’s plenty of space.”

Akito cringes, turning slowly and forcing a smile.

”Hey senpai.” He sits down next to Tsukasa, not without leaving a sizeable distance between them.

“Akito, My amazing junior, how are you.” Tsukasa is chomping away at his lunch, pausing momentarily and pulling strange faces. Akito assumes he’s taking in the taste of his food, but what does he know, Tsukasa is a strange one.

“I’m alright.” He wants to keep this short, make conversation, end it quickly and leave before anyone sees him with this nut job and assume they’re anything more than distant acquaintances. “And you?”

“I’m great! My luncheon is quite delicious today.” He smiles widely at Akito, twinkle in his eye as bright as ever.

Akito turns his head away as to not be blinded and rolls his eyes at Tsukasa’s unnecessary use of the word ‘luncheon.’

“Where’s the other one?” He’s never seen Tsukasa without that other weirdo trailing behind him with some sort of contraption.

“Rui? He’s always busy at lunch.” Tsukasa continues to smile.

“Well uh that’s great senpai, well i’ll be going now.“ Akito makes a move to stand up and get out of there as fast as possible-

“No Toya today?”

And Tsukasa is still talking.

Akito musters up all the patience he has left and turns to Tsukasa again.

“No. He has library duties.” Unfortunately, explaining this to Tsukasa had reminded him of the fact that it’ll be like this for the rest of the week.

His saddened tone must have been caught by Tsukasa.

“Is that all?”

While Akito isn’t Tsukasa’s biggest fan, he will admit that he’s not the worst guy to talk to. His problem solving skills second to none and his ability to raise anyone’s mood should be studied, not that Akito would ever tell him that. He’d never hear the end of it.

“He’s got library duties every day for the rest of the week.” Well he’s here now, Akito reasons with himself, and slumps back down next to Tsukasa and pulls out his lunch.

“Well if you’d like you can spend your lunches this week with yours truly. Enjoying your luncheon in the company of friends always makes it taste better.”

Akito scoffs, nothing could make Ena’s cooking taste any better, but he humours his Senpai anyways.

“We’ll see.” Akito will not be returning even if someone pays him, but Tsukasa doesn’t really need to know that.

He sits quietly while Tsukasa chats away as they eat. It’s a lot different to eating with Toya, they talk easily but it isn’t nearly as much as Tsukasa is talking now. Tsukasa is actually kind of funny when he isn’t trying, which he isn’t right now and Akito is having to hold in a couple of laughs here and there.

Akito finishes his lunch and stuffs his lunch box into his bag.

“Akito! Before you leave,” Tsukasa zips over his bag and rummages around for a second before pulling out a packet of wipes, “Here, for your hands.”

Akito takes a wipe and cleans his hands, tossing it onto Tsukasa’s head after he’s done.

Tsukasa groans “You’re so crude.”

“Yeah yeah.” Akito shoves his hands into his pockets and makes his way to his next class, Tsukasa screaming after him something about respecting his Senpai.

Akito lets himself chuckle now his back is to Tsukasa. What an odd day he’s had.
