A heavy silence hung between Trina and Kai as they stepped onto the elevator that would take them to the parking lot of General Hospital. Trina couldn’t say that she liked having to introduce Kai to Congressman Drew Quartermaine. When Kai had mentioned needing to meet with him, she had to hold herself back from telling him all about that...sex tape that she had a front row table to at the Quartermaines a few months ago. She hadn’t seen Drew Quartermaine after that, but she had heard a lot about him from Joss, who ranted on and on about him and Willow and what they had done to Michael. It wouldn’t have been appropriate to bring it up. She could just imagine the talking to she would get from Stella if she had, so she kept that bit of news to herself.
She was surprised when Drew had brought up Oscar. She hadn’t thought about Oscar in ages, to be honest, but it was sweet that Drew was setting up a program in his name and that Kai was going to be a part of it. Then she made the mistake of rambling on about Greenland. She didn’t know why she had brought that up. Perhaps as an attempt to explain further how she was connected to the congressman...but that had just brought up thoughts about people that she had lost...especially one person she had lost and that alone had brought on the silence and by the thoughtful look Kai gave her, she could tell that he had caught on and was probably now wondering what person she had lost.
She just wasn’t sure if she wanted to talk about that person. Not right now...not with Kai...but then if not with Kai, then with who? Gio had his own thing going with Emma these days, so they barely saw each other. Joss was gone. Her family was so happy that she was moving on with her life, she didn’t dare bring...him...up anymore. And she barely saw...his...family anymore. So the only regular person in her life that she could talk about...him...with was Kai. But would he even want to listen? Why would he, especially now when their relationship was...deepening?
They were in his car, heading for Bobbie’s when Kai decided to break the silence that had hung over them for way too long now.
“So...you lost someone? Not too long ago, with how quiet you got,” Kai kept his voice neutral. He didn’t want to spook her or cause her to get defensive. He wanted her to know that she could talk to him about anything. God, he had dumped all of his feelings and thoughts about football on to her more times than he could count. It was about time he allowed her to do the same if she needed to.
“Yes. I did. Last year,” Trina answered, keeping the emotion out of her voice. She wasn’t used to talking about...him. It was hard, especially with a guy that...well...that she was moving on with. But shouldn’t she tell him? Didn’t he have a right to know? Kai wanted to get to know her, right? If she held back from talking about Spencer, who had been such a big part of her...well then Kai would never get to know her. Not really.
“Look, if you don’t want to talk about it, I understand. But I saw the look on your face and I could tell that the person you were thinking about wasn’t the Congressman’s dead son. Just know that...if you want to talk about him...I don’t mind listening.”
“You wouldn’t mind hearing me go on and on about someone else?” Trina gave him a skeptical look.
“Not at all. I mean...I like to think that we’re friends if nothing else. What kind of friend would I be if I set limits on what and who we talk about? Besides...when you feel deeply for someone...they become a part of you so...if you lost someone you felt deeply for...it helps me to get to know you better. You know?”
Trina blinked. She had just had the same thought. “Yeah...I know.”
“But I won’t push if you don’t want to talk about it.”
Trina sighed and leaned her head back against the head seat and closed her eyes. “His name was Spencer. Spencer Cassadine...and I was so crazy about him that I followed him onto a ship and got shipnapped right along with him. That’s what Drew and my dad saved me from…”
“Wow…”
Trina frowned, suddenly feeling annoyed with herself. “You know what? I don’t know why I said that he saved me, because I didn’t even know he was there until we were on the plane home. He didn’t save me. I saved myself...along with Spencer and my dad and Spencer’s grandmother and even before that, it was just me and Spencer. We mainly saved ourselves! They came in at the end! What the hell?!”
Kai laughed. “Why did you make it seem that dude saved you for then?”
“I don’t know! I mean...I knew he was there. I know he and my dad are friends...as far as I know! But he didn’t save me! If it wasn’t for me finding the navigation system and calling my mom, they wouldn’t even have known where we were! I don’t know what I was thinking.”
Kai just chuckled. “You know...I’d like to hear the full story someday. Of how you saved yourself...and your friend from being shipnapped.”
“You would? Seriously?”
“Yes.”
Trina paused, as if thinking it over. Then she gave a determined nod. If she was going to talk about Spencer with Kai, why not start with their greatest adventure together? “Alright. Take me to Bobbies and while we eat, I’ll tell you all about how I had defeated a manglomaniac madman and saved...Spencer and Ace Cassadine along with the world. Special guest stars, Curtis Ashford and Laura Collins.”
Kai smiled, looking forward to an afternoon of listening to Trina recite an adventure that she’ll most likely never forget.
