Work Text:
It only took the sound of a persistent buzzing noise against his cluttered nightstand to begin Tony's restless tossing and turning fit in his bed. The last thing he wanted was to crack his eyes open and bother himself with figuring out what it was, but the noise was too repetitive for him to be able to let himself fall back asleep. He tried and tried, but after only a few minutes of ignorant shifting, Tony's eyes cracked open and were met with the brightness of day just outside his bedroom window. It was blinding, and it caused his eyes to strain.
A irritated groan left his lips as he shifted and turned his body towards his nightstand, his hand lazily searching for his phone, which he thought was the root of the buzzing. Coincidentally, when he found his phone and picked it up, it was still buzzing. The cause? Jaime, his boyfriend of almost a year.
There were numerous amounts of unread texts and various missed calls from hours before that he had slept through. Seeing that the most recent missed call was only from a few minutes ago, he decided to call him back, putting the call on speaker phone so he wouldn't have to bother putting the phone up to his ear. Jaime answered in a matter of seconds.
"Holy shit Tony about time." If he didn't know any better, Tony would think Jaime was almost concerned that he didn't hear from him at all. His eyes glanced over to the time on his phone and they widened when the time read '2:34 pm' and even more when the date read 'February 25th'. It was his birthday today.
"Woah. I seriously didn't think I was asleep that long Hime." Tony sighed out his words. Going out with Vic the night before left him exhausted to no end, and he almost felt a little bad for not letting Jaime know that's why he'd been asleep for so long. He combed his fingers through his hair as he continued to speak.
"I was out with Vic last night. I didn't realize he was a crazy partier. I swear he dragged me... everywhere." Tony eventually stood up and dragged himself to his closet, ungainly looking for something to wear for the day. "That must've been the best early birthday gift ever huh?" Jaime giggled over the line, although Tony wasn't at all amused by his joke. "No. It sucked." He responded bluntly as he found a graphic t-shirt and some jeans to put on. He didn't move in a rush, but it was definitely quicker than he normally does.
"Jeez you grouch. I can feel your frown through the phone." Jaime paused, and just before Tony could get defensive about his remark, he spoke again. "I've got much better things planned. I'm positive it'll make you feel better."
While Tony jumped into his jeans, he could sense how enthusiastic Jaime felt while he was talking about the special day, but for the record, he sounded enthusiastic about almost anything he planned.
"Well... what did you plan?" Tony asked as if he wasn't almost positive of what Jaime would say, and he was proven correct when he said "I can't tell you... it's a surprise! I have to make it special for the birthday boy ." If it were possible, Jaime would be the king of surprises. It was totally his thing. Tony wished it hadn't become so predictable, but he found it endearing that Jaime was so eager to leave him, well, surprised.
"Wow really? I seriously can't wait." Tony was trying to at least seem enthusiastic as he finished getting dressed, even though he already knew Jaime would be surprising him. It would probably be some crazy get together with a ton of people he didn't know, just like the party Vic dragged him to yesterday. Just the thought of it drained him even more.
"Well um... I'll see you when I get there." Jaime agreed and they soon hung up the phone, to which a long sigh left Tony's lips. Clearly he wasn't fond of surprises, or at least not this one in particular.
When he finished getting ready to leave for the day, he slipped on his shoes, threw on a jacket over his t-shirt, put on his snapback like always, and grabbed his keys before heading to his car. He was hoping sooner or later he'd be able to move in with Jaime rather than having to drive all the way to his apartment. It felt so far, and the thought of that made him get there more urgently.
Sooner or later, Tony was at Jaime's front door, anxiously biting at his snakebites and too hesitant to ring the doorbell. What if Jaime humiliated him? What if there were tons of people he didn't know there? He shook his head at the thought of that. ' Don't think like that... Jaime wouldn't do something like that to me. '
He kept that mindset long enough to ring the doorbell and it was opened by none other than Jaime himself. Tony wanted to say something, but Jaime spoke first. "Wait! Don't come in yet... close your eyes." He covered Tony's eyes with one hand, and took his hand to guide him into the apartment with his unoccupied one. It wasn't long before the hand was removed from over his eyes and he could see again.
"Surprise!!! Happy birthday Tony!!!" Jaime's arms were stretched out into jazz hands as Tony looked around. There wasn't a single person there he didn't recognize, in fact, the only person besides himself was Jaime, who was standing right in front of him with the stupidest yet purest look of happiness on his face. There was a big happy birthday banner, some balloons scattered all over the place, and a bunch of confetti on the floor.
"I couldn't get Vic to come. He was... busy. Yeah. We'll celebrate with him sometime soon." After Jaime spoke, he quickly came over to Tony and embraced him in a big hug, one that wasn't expected by Tony. It made him tense purely on instinct, but he eased into it. The hug made his body hot, and there wasn't a single part of his body that wasn't tinted at least the slightest hue of pink. He'd gotten so many of these hugs before, and somehow they had the same effect they always did on him.
"You really did surprise me this time Jaime. I was expecting, you know, a party." Something he had no energy for, but his boyfriend and a couple beers was enough for him to have a good time. "I know you a little bit," Jaime snickered out "I probably should've asked you first instead of surprising you... but I thought you'd like some one on one time together." He was spot on. Tony would use any excuse in the book to get some alone time with Jaime, even if it was just being alone in the same room as him, admiring all of the features he was equipped with in silence. That was better than anything else he could think of.
Jaime kissed the side of Tony's neck as he moved out of the hug, and all of the skin on and around where he'd kissed was burning like a flame had just touched him. Tony's hand went up to his neck, near where Jaime had just kissed him so he wouldn't be able to see how red his skin had gotten. Tony found it so embarrassing how quick his skin was to burn up from little things like a peck from Jaime. A nervous smile crossed Tony's face and right before he could talk he was interrupted by Jaime's eager voice.
"Oh! I got you a card, cmere." Within a second Tony was being pulled to the leather couch in the living room. He threw himself down and in front of him was a coffee table with a card in a purple envelope, two glass bottles of beer, a bottle opener with a weird design, a lighter, two paper plates, a cake that had a turtle on the top of it and written in green icing said 'Happy Birthday Tony Turtle!', and a few candles in a variety of colors. The cake made him smile when he got a better look at it.
"Feel free to dig in whenever," Jaime paused, realizing something wasn't right "Wait, I mean, let me know when you're ready to dig in. We have to sing the song first." Jaime crashed down beside Tony and when he saw him trying to pop the cap off his beer bottle with the bottle opener, he offered to do it for him, opening both beer bottles with ease.
"Cheers to Tony." There was a wide giddy smile on Jaime's face as the glass of their bottles clinked together, as if the sound brought him a sense of pride. "Cheers to... me." They drank at the same time, Tony being the one to put his bottle back down onto the table first.
"You said you wanted me to open this card?" He looked down at the card with the purple envelope that had 'To THE man!' written on the front of it, and then back up at him. Jaime hummed and nodded in response to his words, so Tony picked up the card and began opening the envelope.
When he got hold of the card, he realized Jaime had made this card himself. Not to say it looked bad but... it certainly didn't look like a store bought card. There were tons of doodles and scribbles on it, very colorful, but still staying in the range of colors Tony liked, and of course, 'happy birthday' was spelt out in big black bold letters. He opened the card to see the message inside and was surprised by a long paragraph and some cash. The paragraph read...
' Happy birthday Tone! I couldn't miss out on doing something special with the best boyfriend EVER on his most specialist day of the YEAR!! Not just that, but I get to be with the sickest guitarist I've ever met. Rehearsing with you is so awesome and I love learning new things about you everyday. You're the coolest guy I know and if I had things my way, I'd be spending every second with you.
Love you tons,
Jaime :-) '
There was an evident tint to Tony's face after he read the note in full, and if that didn't give away how much he loved it, the wide smile on his face definitely did. He counted out the bills that fell out of the card and it was the same number as the age he was turning. He never thought people would keep doing that after he grew out of his teens. He appreciated it nonetheless.
"You're..." Tony started, but he couldn't get the words out right. He was flustered to no end; to think that Jaime would put this much thought into doing something just for him. Making him his own card, getting a customized cake, being alone just how he liked it. It was incredibly sexy to him. "This... is great. I love it. I love you." Tony leaned over to get his beer bottle again, taking a drink from it as he looked into Jaime's eyes. There was this look in them he hadn't seen before.
"I'm seriously glad you like it." Jaime moved the snapback off of his head and sat it to his side, combing his fingers through his soft and wavy locks before he kissed him, smoothly and passionately. Jaime could feel the heat radiating from Tony's face, but he thought it only added to the atmosphere.
Both of their mouths tasted of beer, and to Jaime, it only made him want to kiss Tony more, but he refrained and eventually pulled away. "No, I love it Hime. That card is sick." Tony mumbled onto Jaime's lips before he was the one to pull back in, completely out of impulse as he normally wasn't one to initiate. The second kiss was aggressively passionate, which made the both of them worry if they made out much longer they'd choose to eat each other up instead of the cake in front of them. For that reason alone, they pulled apart, although not really wanting to. It showed in both of their eyes.
It took Tony awhile to catch his breath and while he was, Jaime took the plastic top off from over the cake and picked up the candles that sat next to it, sticking them into whatever blank area of the cake he could find. He sure did play those kisses off well, and Tony always wondered how he managed to do that.
"Seriously? Right now?" Tony glanced over at Jaime as he put his snapback back on his head, making sure his hair was pushed back before he did so. "Well I have to sing to you at some point. Cmon... don't be a party pooper." Jaime nudged Tony before lighting the candles, the wax slowly starting to melt and drip under the flame. That's how Tony felt whenever he kissed Jaime. A candle being engulfed by a flame.
"Alright... are you ready?" Jaime's flashy grin reached his face again as he glanced over at Tony, who just looked at the cake, admiring how the candles illuminated it so much more than before. "Oh... yeah. Sing to me." With those words, Jaime took out his phone so he could record the moment before he started.
"Happy birthday to youu, happy birthday to youuu, happy birthday dear Tonyyyy," His singing was interrupted by his own laughter. It must've been contagious, because Tony let out a laugh when he heard his. "Happy birthday to you!"
He cheered after he'd finished singing, soon urging Tony to make a wish before he blew out the candles. It took him awhile to think of something, and it made him laugh awkwardly, but he eventually closed his eyes and thought of the one thing he wanted.
I wish to stay with Jaime for as long as time will let me.
With that, he blew out all the candles on the cake and smiled widely at the camera, which gained a holler from Jaime. It wasn't just because he was recording, but he was also just really really infatuated with Tony's smile.
"You're another year older... that's what I'm talkin about!" He wrapped his arm around Tony and pinched his cheek, which only encouraged his smile to grow.
Despite the fact there was cake in front of them, they became too distracted in jokes and chatter to even worry about eating it. They stuck to their beers and conversing about anything and everything they could. Before they knew it, hours had passed, beers bottles had been emptied, and all their conversations had ended. Tony's head was rested against Jaime's shoulder as he looked straight ahead of him, looking at the beer bottles that had piled up, the card Jaime had made for him, and the cake that still went untouched.
"I really want to repay you for this Hime. This was... so great." Tony's hand brushed up against Jaime's, lightly intertwining their fingers together. "Just keep loving me. I don't care about anything else." They stayed just like that, pushed together perfectly like puzzle pieces while Jaime pressed light kisses onto Tony's forehead. Now that was his favorite gift.
