Work Text:

“Snow? In this heat?”

I looked closer at the screen. It took me a moment to register what was wrong with the photo presented to me. It was indeed Mt. Madoiyama, a beautiful landmark in Sasanami which gets topped with a remarkably white snow cap during winter. The only problem is this photo was taken at present, in the sweltering summer heat.

“There were reports about a sudden drop of temperature around the area three days ago. Eventually, snow started to form. CORG also detects high amounts of Bane energy in the area.”

Shu flicks through photos of the mountain as she reports. Normally, Mt. Madoiyama would be covered in a lush green during this season. It was hard not to notice the clash of seasons at its peak. Speaking of which…

“What about the civilians? Surely they would have seen this.”

Shu adjusted her glasses before answering. “CORG has already set up a perimeter. Plus, the Karasugo are also dealing with any public inquiries about the matter. As for the mountain view itself, CORG has a few tricks on them so that’s all covered.”

I ponder how CORG could even begin to hide an incident of this scale. Is it a cloaking device? A mass memory wipe? Is there a Modifier capable of altering the space?

Shu continues with her brief.

“Normally we would send Pheasant Squad but as they are currently in Shashvat for a security detail, I’ve assigned Winter Squad for this mission. And given the nature of this phenomenon, they are more suited for the environment.”

Winter Squad… I don’t think I’ve ever actually gone on a mission with Vidar and Leviathan, at least not with Winter Squad exclusively. Most of their missions take place far away in the polar regions and could take months before they return to Ain Soph. Compared to me, they’re more experienced and on an extreme environment no less.

“Have you ever been on a mission with them?”

I shake my head.

“Well, that’s understandable. They rarely take missions on location. But Leviathan tells me you were a reliable leader in a survival situation and Vidar trusts you,” she said piling the documents together. “In any case, you will likely act as a bridge between the three groups considering your experience.”

“The three groups?”

“CORG will also be sending Agent Anubis and Agent Bastet to Sasanami. This phenomenon coincides with a few missing persons in the area, therefore, this will be a collaboration mission. All of you will regroup and meet with the Prime Lord at the Karasugo Mansion. Considering your recent mission in Sasanami and the fact you are also acquainted with the CORG agents, you’re best suited to join Winter Squad for this mission.”

“I see. I’ll do my best.”

“Now arriving at Sasanami Station.”

The digital voice repeats throughout the cabin, interrupting my train of thought as I review a file regarding a missing person. At this point, Sasanami was visible with its beautiful backdrop of mountain ranges, none of which seem obvious that a portion of it was out of season. CORG really did well at disguising the affected area.

“Master! Master! Look over there!”

Vidar quietly looks toward where Leviathan was pointing. It seemed to be a cloud in the shape of a wolf.

“Is this your first time in Sasanami, Leviathan?”

“Yeah! But Master has been here before.”

“It was a long time ago,” she explained. “Kuninotokotachi dragged us here for a little sight-seeing.”

I grin at the thought of Kuninotokotachi showing Vidar around. Another introvert adopted into the fun circle of our resident ninja. The excited Leviathan quickly calls to her master for something outside the window. Vidar calms her down, reminding her that we were here for a mission not a vacation.

“Don’t worry, I’m sure we’ll have plenty of time to go sight-seeing before we return to Ain Soph. I’m quite familiar with a few good spots in Sasanami, I’m sure Leviathan will like it.”

Leviathan’s eyes lit up. “Can we, Master???”

Vidar pats the little girl on her head. “Sure. But right now, we have a mission to do.”

Leviathan looked even more motivated now, determined to prove to Vidar her strength.

With our luggage in hand, we step into Sasanami. I scan the crowd for the CORG agents we were supposed to meet.

“Let’s wait here a moment,” I said, looking around. It had been months since the last time I saw Anubis and Bastet. I’ve worked a few cases with them every now and then but a mission of this nature is a first.

Before the crowd completely disperses, I hear the unmistakable voice of Bastet call out to us.

“Hi-hi! Over here, Administrator!” She waves to us to join her and Anubis on a quiet corner. He ends a phone call just as we approach.

“Good morning, Administrator,” Anubis greets, concise as usual.

“It’s nice to see you again, agents. This is Aether Gazer’s Winter Squad. We will be working together for this mission.”

The agents introduced themselves to my team and vice versa. Bastet and Leviathan immediately hit it off when each pointed to their hats. Anubis and Vidar simply stood by, mission in mind. I think about what Shu told me about being a bridge between the groups, remembering that Vidar isn’t quick to warm up to new people and Anubis can be quite standoffish. So far, so good.

“Uh, I didn’t realize we boarded the same trip. We could have discussed mission details on the way and gotten acquainted.”

“It’s alright, Admin. We actually arrived hours ago. You know how Senpai is, he’s always prepared,” Bastet chuckled, seemingly proud of her partner.

Anubis nods in response. “Bastet and I already touched-based with the CORG unit stationed here. I also acquired a map and canvassed the area. We might need to consider an expedition to the affected mountain.”

Their efficiency was admirable as expected. I feel like we’re off to a great start. Before Anubis could provide more details, a young man with white hair steps up to introduce himself.

"You must be our guests from CORG and Aether Gazer. I hope the wait wasn’t long. My name is Kagutsuchi and I will be escorting you to the Karasugo Mansion."

After exchanging a few greetings, our group follows Kagutsuchi to Shimogyou where Prime Lord Sendou Karasugo awaits.

It had only been a few weeks since our last visit to Sasanami. The Karasugo estate had a bit of construction done to some of their properties considering the damage the skirmish left. The same can be said with the Reitan Palace. After Akika, the entire place had to be rebuilt once again, unearthing the secret passages and rooms that the Pheasant Squad once found themselves in. It was an attempt to capture its original essence of being a sacred temple as opposed to just a modernized structure.

Sendou had been overseeing this construction since it began. But today, he had other matters to attend to. Shortly after, he arrives to meet us with Senba not far behind him.

She quickly spots me and moves forward with a warm smile. "You're back."

I only had time for an awkward wave before Kagutsuchi begins speaking.

"My Lord, these are the agents CORG sent and this is Aether Gazer’s Winter Squad."

The Prime Lord gives us a once-over before introducing himself.

“Thank you so much for coming. My name is Sendou Karasugo,” he turns towards Senba, “And this is my sister–”

“Izanami.” A hint of pride can be seen on her expression. Like finally coming to terms with her Modifier identity. But it still needed some getting used to.

"My name is Anubis and this is my partner, Bastet. We're here on behalf of Captain Sekhmet."

"How is she doing?" Izanami asks.

"Captain is currently unavailable for field missions. But she is recovering well," Bastet replied.

“We’re very grateful for what she did for Sasanami. We send our regards,” Sendou spoke.

It was no easy feat what Sekhmet did. Not surprising to learn she’s still recovering after using the Omega gear. But knowing she sent her best agents in place puts me at ease.

Sendou turns to me, "I suppose you didn't expect to be back so soon, Admin. I apologize for interrupting your recovery time but ever since Kagutsuchi detected this Bane energy, I knew I had to ask for your help once again."

We gathered to a center table to lay out our plan of action. Sendou lets Kagutsuchi take lead on the briefing since he was the one who investigated the area.

“The affected area contains a well-known trail utilized by hikers and hunters,” Kagutsuchi stated, pointing to a spot in the big map laid out on the table. “Hence why a lot of people reported how cold it was over there.”

“I was lucky to investigate it sooner. We worry it might have been flooded by locals looking to escape the summer heat,” he continued. “Before the memory wipes, they apparently reported to have seen a ghostly figure around.”

“A Visbane?” I asked.

“The locals called it Yuki-Onna,” Kagutsuchi said. “From an old legend.”

“CORG confirms similar sightings,” Anubis added. “By its description, it appears to be an Encroacher Type.”

Bastet reads a report from her terminal, “Civilians allegedly spotted a ghostly-figure with tattered clothes and long dark hair. Reports also mention a voice of what sounds like a woman shrieking around the area.”

The implication was not lost on us. For cases like this, the best thing to do for the person is to ensure the Visbane is eliminated. No remains of the person can be recovered. Modifiers share a certain hatred for Encroacher Types.

Moving forward, Anubis once again brought up his plan for an expedition to Mt. Madoiyama.

“Winter Squad,” Anubis called out, “You will take lead of this operation.”

This takes me by surprise. I was under the impression that Anubis has a handle on things. I turn to Vidar who looked just as surprised as I did for being called out like that. Still, she remains composed. Our lack of immediate reaction compels Anubis to elaborate.

“I am familiar with your specialty. Spending months in the polar regions navigating and eliminating threats make you well-equipped to lead our group in the snow. You will oversee our operation, equipment needed, and who are most suited to join.”

I turn to Vidar, expecting her to look overwhelmed by this sudden shift of responsibility. Instead, it was the opposite.

“Understood,” she replied. A determined look in her eyes. Anubis steps aside to give her more room to read the map. A plan begins to develop.

The air around Vidar shifts, her quiet demeanor replaced with steely determination. I don't see much of her like this. Her soft voice took command of the entire room as she explained our course of action.

"Out on the ice," she begins, "Leviathan and I are vulnerable not only to the Visbanes, but to the harsh environment as well. Which is why it's important to also pay attention to our bodies' reactions. It can be unforgiving and extremely dangerous. In this case, the amount of Bane energy makes this unpredictable as well. After all, the ice formed unnaturally and out of season."

Anubis confirms this with reports from the CORG team stationed here.

"Our priority will be the missing children," she continued. "Once they are secure, we can proceed with eliminating the threat."

"Hopefully, that will also thaw out the forest," Kagutsuchi remarked.

"Leviathan and I can provide a list of equipment needed. We'll be the guide through the ice," Vidar said. "Kagutsuchi is familiar with the area, try to see if there's a safer and shorter route we can take up there."

She turns to Anubis and Bastet next. "The CORG agents will take lead of tracking the missing children. Once everything is all set, we proceed immediately."

"The Karasugo will be at your disposal," spoke Sendou. "We'll make sure to have everything ready by noon."

"Thank you," I say.

"Admin, are you coming too?" Bastet asked. "It might be too dangerous for you."

I had figured it was a given that I was a part of the excursion but now I'm suddenly unsure what kind of role I can even provide for the team. Before I can speak, I hear Vidar from behind.

"It's alright. Admin is quite capable and strong. They can join."

"And if anything happens, we'll protect Admin! Right, Master?"

Vidar simply nods and pats Leviathan. I turn back to Bastet, "I guess that makes six of us."

"Seven."

Izanami steps forward, looking determined.

"I would like to join as well. It's my duty as a member of the Karasugo family and as a Modifier to keep Sasanami safe."

The worry in Sendou's expression was instantly clear but Izanami only looks back at her brother in assurance.

“We leave in the afternoon,” Anubis states.

With that, our meeting adjourns and we each break off to do our parts. Vidar and Leviathan followed Sendou and Kagutsuchi for equipment and other needed materials like maps and rations. Anubis and Bastet gathered more updates at the CORG base. As much as I wish to do more, I can really only wait until we proceed with our mission.

I am left with Izanami. We take a walk around the courtyard for a little breather. I never had the chance to slow down and appreciate the little things the last time I was here. Sasanami is known for their incredible horticulture and the plants surrounding the mansion are no exception. We then reached a portion of the garden with a freshly placed soil bed.

"It's new," Izanami explained. "We recently planted spider lilies over here."

She stops to inspect a sprout from the soil. I can see a smile from behind.

“These flowers must be important to you.”

“You could say that.” She straightens up. “Some say these flowers symbolize death. The path to the underworld is lined with spider lilies.”

“And you believe that?”

“Perhaps. But that’s not why these flowers are important to me.”

“What is it then?”

She chuckles. “You just reminded me why I call you Questioner.”

“And you are changing the subject again, Sen—” I quickly stop as I realized I was about to call her Senba when she introduced herself as Izanami earlier. Before I can correct myself, she interrupts me.

“People have many names for me, but none are accurate. For you, just ‘Senba’ will do.”

“Regardless, to avoid confusion in this mission, I will just call you Izanami. That’s how the team will refer to you later.”

“And I suppose I shall call you Admin then.”

A beep interrupts our chat. “It seems I am needed elsewhere.”

“Just as well, we should go get prepared. See you soon, Administrator.”

In a few more hours, we set for Mt. Madoiyama. While everyone else was busy preparing and coordinating, I am met by Sendou. The anxiety around him was evident but he kept a brave face. The hallway was quieter, disconnected from the busy din of the other rooms. I wondered if the sound of our steps added to his nervousness.

“I must say, I admire your courage, Admin. You don’t seem flustered at all,” he states.

“You’d be surprised. I suppose I just learned to keep it all together. My desire to help is stronger than cowering and waiting to be rescued.”

He chuckles. “Such profession brings out a strength you might not even be aware of. Unfortunately for me, I am yet to see if I even have such a thing.”

“Is this about Senba?”

He stops to inspect a framed painting of a spider lily. I hear him sigh. “Her decision to carry the burden all those years ago continues to haunt me. So my term as Prime Lord is also an attempt at normalcy in this household. One where I can protect her and let her be herself again.”

Sendou turns to face me, “She recently came to terms with her Modifier identity. I am happy she gets to experience a whole new world but I am also aware of its risks. As her brother, you cannot fault me for my worry, Admin.”

“For what it’s worth, I believe you are doing the right thing by trusting Senba to make her own decisions. I think she would be grateful for that.”

Sendou nods. I was unsure if my words had any impact on him but he certainly looked like he felt better than before.

“That reminds me… I am preparing a spread for the team before they leave. Is there anything in particular you’d like to request?”

******

I have never been on a mission with Winter Squad before but I imagine their base up north is not as scenic as it is here in Sasanami. Leviathan was enjoying her time by a pond. The vibrant and beautiful colors of the koi fish reflect on her icy blue eyes. Vidar was behind her, admiring the garden from a distance. I see their gear and bags all prepared and ready to be grabbed at a moment’s notice.

“It seems our friends from CORG still have business to deal with on their end,” I say as I sit down beside Vidar. “Bastet just messaged me they’ll be back soon.”

Perhaps too entranced by the view, Vidar acknowledges my presence with a nod.

“It’s so beautiful,” she says. “And it’s so quiet here.”

“It must be nice to be back here.”

She nods again. “Kuninotokotachi was too busy showing us around the city so I never saw much of the countryside.”

“Master, look! This one is so big!”

“Oh, that almost looked as big as the ones we had to catch to eat,” Vidar replied, looking toward the pond.

“Speaking of eating, come with me. We ought to have a meal before we leave.”

Leviathan obliged, pouting. It seems she really took a liking to the fish pond.

I take them to the spread that Sendou promised. The table was filled with a healthy mix of light and heavy food. A few rations were also present and ready to be taken. I make a mental note to take a few for the mission.

I can see their eyes lit up at the servings of a variety of meats and vegetables. At a far end of the table was an ice cream station, complete with flavors unique to Sasanami.

Leviathan exclaims her delight and immediately looks over which flavor she was going to try first.

“I called in a request for ice cream. I know how much you love it, Leviathan.”

“Thank you, Admin! This is incredible!”

Just as I was about to grab a plate, Vidar hands me hers and it was filled with food. “Here you go, Admin. You need to eat first because you’ll need it more.”

Her concern for my well-being quite certainly tugged at my heartstrings. However, I was having none of it. Being Modifiers may have their advantages but I knew they still retained human qualities. Besides, there was plenty for everyone.

"Nope, nope. You guys are eating with me now. What kind of Admin would I be if I can’t even share a meal with you?”

In response, I also grabbed a plate and filled it up. She takes it a little hesitantly then she just smiles.

"Verthandi and Osiris were right. You take really good care of us on missions," Vidar said.

The flattery was unexpected but otherwise welcome. Am I blushing?

The team soon convenes at the spread and together we sat, exchanging pleasantries and laughter between mouthfuls of Sasanami delights. This cuisine always has a place in my heart. If it weren't for the mission, we just seem like colleagues having lunch together. I almost wish I could just stay and enjoy this.

My morning started in Ain Soph. A lovely breakfast, a moment of peace, and some sunshine. Now I stand in front of a CORG data barrier, equipped for a cold expedition to Mt. Madoiyama.

"There's currently a blizzard in this sector," Vidar stated. "We're gonna need another entry point."

The seven of us were covered head to toe in insulation gear. We also had our own thermal goggles and detectors thanks to CORG.

The next entry point took about 30 minutes to get there. It lead to a clearing where the snow was minimal and visibility was good. Unfortunately, the signal seemed too shaky to connect back to base.

The rest of the afternoon was uneventful. Our detectors never picked up a spike of Bane Energy. We wandered on a white landscape, stopping every now and then to assess our bearings and look for clues. The snowfall was also fickle; going from light to medium in intensity then stopping altogether.

“This sector is all clear,” announced Bastet. “No sign of Bane Energy or any other thermal energy.”

“Same on my end,” squeaked Leviathan.

While it sounded like a good thing, there was much of the area we have yet to cover. It will also be dark in a few hours so we might have to consider setting up camp too. Anubis continues to examine the maps and clues he had.

“Kagutsuchi, are there any trails nearby?”

“There’s one, just past that big tree over there.”

Anubis then summons Upu, his spirit dog. The shards glisten in obsidian and gold and it all combines to form the shape of man’s best friend. Upu rushes to follow the Modifiers to the trail.

Realizing a majority of our group was unfamiliar with Anubis’ spirit dog, Bastet volunteers to enlighten us, “That was Upu, Senpai’s spirit dog. He looks rough but he’s actually a big sweetheart.”

“The dog came from his Access Key?” Izanami quietly asked.

“Yup. I’ve seen him summon Upu to help with a few cases,” I answered.

“Master also has Fenrir! He’s as big as Upu is. He doesn’t let anybody pat him on the head except Master and me. Oh and Admin too!” Leviathan exclaimed.

“Is your Fenrir also with you?”

“No, he is not like Anubis’,” Vidar replied. “He is a real dog whom I raised since he was a pup. He was with me when I awakened.”

“To have a companion during such a time must have been a blessing,” Izanami said softly. A hint of pain in her eyes.

We heard the howl of Upu and trudged towards the trail. It seems Anubis may have found something.

The trail was apparently well known among hunters. We were fortunate it wasn’t open season but it still leaves us questions why one of the children vanished around this area. On the ground was the right half of a flip-flop. The missing kids were clearly not dressed for a sudden winter.

We searched the area for any more clues but nothing came up. Upu on the other hand, seems to have picked up a faint scent north of the trail. With our only lead, we trudged once more in the thick snow. The more we head north, the worse the weather got. On the other hand, the more we followed our lead, the more our hope begins to return.

Until Upu’s abrupt stop.

Anubis ducks down, leveled with his dog. Upu looked distressed, like trying to find our next path but it was clear the trail we were following reached a dead end.

Anubis pats Upu before recalling him back to his Access Key. He straightens up and tells us the scent stops here. But this “here” was just in the middle of snow-covered woods. He sighs.

“I know there’s a spring nearby where we can rest for the time being,” Kagutsuchi offered. “It’s likely frozen but it’s better than being out here.”

Anubis nods. I can tell he’s bothered by the scent disappearing. As we walk, he was deep in thought.

I for one, was eager for a break. I don’t think I’ve even sat down since we came here. Trudging in snow whilst wearing heavy gear is exhausting. Leviathan sees my pained expression. For someone of her stature, she doesn’t seem to be struggling as much as I was. She gives me a cheeky smile, “Keep going, Admin! You’re part of Winter Squad now!”

Her little cheers do help and I gain enough strength to continue. Beside me, I notice Izanami walking like the rest of us. I wasn’t used to seeing her grounded.

“Hovering exhausts my Divine Grace. I should refrain from doing that on this mission.”

Hovering doesn’t sound too bad for me. Being a Modifier sure has its perks.

The snowfall continued, raging as we head deeper into the woods. It was awhile before the weather calmed down. As we move along, Kagutsuchi begins to worry. We were taking too long to reach the spring he mentioned.

He suddenly stops, looking ahead in confusion.

“Kagutsuchi, what’s wrong?”

“That big tree… We already passed by it.”

We all looked towards the tree he was pointing at. It was the same tree where we found the flip-flop.

“Did we go back? How is this possible, we continued up north!” I exclaimed.

“The spring should be here but it’s not,” he said quietly. “What’s going on?”

“Is there any chance we took a wrong turn?” Anubis asked.

“I can assure you, we’re on the right path.”

We approached the big tree again. It looked just as it did when we passed it by earlier. It was definitely the same tree too, our bootprints were still fresh on the ground.

“Maybe we should go back,” Bastet suggested.

“We are back,” Izanami responded. “This is where we came from, right?”

There was no doubt about it. It’s as if we walked in a circle. An eerie silence befell our team. Everyone was too busy assessing our surroundings. We all followed Kagutsuchi further up north. We know we’re not supposed to be looking at a big tree right now but we were.

Looking at the ground where our bootprints were, I had an idea. “Anubis, can you summon Upu again? This was the trail we were following after all.”

He obliges. Data shards materialized in the air once again. Upu does as he is told, only this time, there was no scent to follow.

“What do you mean? We caught a lead right here!” My bewilderment did not go unnoticed. Or perhaps it did, as everyone else was just as bewildered as I was.

Upu runs out, trying to catch any lingering scent we can follow. He circles around and returns to Anubis empty-handed.

“What’s going on? Are we lost?” Leviathan asked.

“We can’t be lost, I know we’re supposed to be by the spring now,” Kagutsuchi said as he flings open a map. He estimates our location, pointing it with his index finger. “We should be around here.”

Before we had the chance to review our location, we heard loud shrieking from afar.

It was a sound we had been dreading but one that we have been waiting for. Our detectors loudly rung as we see Bane Energy levels rising. Yuki-Onna was close.

True to their nature, every Modifier already had their defenses ready before I could even switch the safety off of my gun. The shrieks grew louder, possibly conveying its distance. It was erratic and heart-wrenching to listen to. There was still no visual on our target

Despite our defenses, we felt rather exposed; lying in wait for an invisible enemy. Snow once again falls, getting heavier by the minute and thus reducing our visibility. It didn’t take long before we were in the middle of what is essentially a blizzard. Yuki-Onna appeared in the distance, a ghostly figure amid the hurricane. It matches the description.

Bastet, being the quickest in our team, was the first to charge. Not wanting to lose visual on our target. Anubis went after her, summoning Upu as well; a choreographed move on their part. Unfortunately, their attacks connected to a mere illusion, instantly shattering like ice.

The pair were quick to recover from their confusion as they ran back. The figure made an appearance again and was met with Izanami’s cold blade. But once again, it simply shatters in the air.

The snow storm only grew worse. We could barely see ahead of us. The illusions continued appearing until we realized it was useless to keep attacking as they were only projections of the Visbane, likely an ability to keep itself more hidden. We resumed our earlier formation, forming a small defensive circle and covering all points. But it’s as if we’re inside a hall of mirrors.

Then, I felt it. I suddenly realized I was being lifted up in the air. We were all being spun around inside the blizzard.

“What’s happening?!”

I was getting dizzy from the spin and my visions starts to blur.

Everything turned dark after that.

******

Warmth.

The warm glow of the fire was such a welcome feeling. My eyes half open, slowly adjusted to my surroundings. Oh, what is this warmth? Taking a moment to gather my wits, I notice I’m resting my head on something soft and warm.

“Questioner, are you awake?”

My abrupt rise got my head spinning again. I hadn’t realize I was sleeping on Senba’s lap.

“Admin, you’re up!” Vidar exclaimed. “Are you alright?”

I see Vidar coming back from gathering more firewood. Anubis follows behind.

“What happened? Where are we?” I asked, trying to gather any sense I could. My head was still spinning and my exhaustion seems to be catching up. Everything was fuzzy.

“Somewhere safe,” Vidar responded. “We got separated back there.”

“What?”

When I finally recovered from my initial weariness, Vidar explained that half of our team was nowhere to be found after that horrible blizzard.

“It’s a good thing I found you immediately, Admin. You were almost buried in the snow. It was getting dark too so we set up camp here.” Vidar gestures around. We were inside a damp cave. Not the best place but certainly better than being out in the open.

Anubis had been trying to find the others with Upu but with no such luck.

“Our comms are dead,” he said. “Most of our equipment got destroyed.”

I can see the worry in his eyes. As much as he wishes to go out and search for them, it would be foolish to go out in the dark while a snow storm raged outside.

Izanami quietly pours me a bowl of hot stew. “Here, Admin. You need to eat.”

The warmth of the bowl was such a blessing, even moreso was the delicious hot food. After hours out on the cold, I could cry.

The four of us huddled by the fire. We were silent, contemplating our situation and our mission. As far as we know, we still had no leads towards the missing children and our skirmish with Yuki-Onna barely got us anywhere but separated. Right now, our optimism was as dim as the place we found ourselves in.

“I’m sure they’re together.”

My voice was the first to break the silence, snapping everyone out of their thoughts.

“If we’re here, there’s a chance the three of them are together somewhere out there.”

I wanted to reassure them more but my own worry catches up to me and I find myself at a loss for words. I don’t even know if Leviathan, Bastet, and Kagutsuchi possibly found each other after that storm. I can only hope they are also huddled by a fire somewhere safe from the elements.

I feel Vidar’s gloved hand on mine. Even through the cloth, I can feel its chill. But the warm look on her face was assurance enough.

We continued eating in silence.

“Agent Anubis,” Izanami spoke, breaking the ice. “May I ask about your Access Key?”

Though taken aback, Anubis agrees. “Access Keys of CORG agents are classified to the public. But seeing as you are a Modifier, what do you wish know?”

“Your spirit dog… I am told he came from your Access Key. Is that right?”

“That’s right.”

“You summon him from the Afterlife Realm as well?”

“My Access Key is not capable of summoning from alter-dimensions. How Upu came about is different.”

Anubis explains that his Access Key, Face of the Jackal, can copy the deceased’s soul data. However, as the word suggests, it is merely a copy and nothing more. And that he refuses to use it again on other lives.

“The Upu you saw is not the same one I raised,” he added. “I supposed I only called him Upu out of habit.”

Izanami looks thoughtfully at her bowl. It was Anubis’ turn to inquire.

“If I may, I read about your ability in Captain Sekhmet’s report. You also summon a spirit data when you’re in combat.”

“Yes,” she answers. “Though she doesn’t appear only during combat nor does she need to be summoned all the time.”

Behind her, a spirit data manifests out of thin air. She looked like a young woman, pale as a ghost and quiet. There was a moment of panic before we realized it wasn’t the Visbane.

The spirit gently leaned down towards Izanami. Hisame, she is called. Izanami explains that she comes from the Afterlife Realm and took the form of her mother, Ayako.

“It was difficult when she first manifested. Every time I see her, I get this wrong impression that…” her words hung in the air. She shakes her head, perhaps in an effort to shake away terrible memories. “But she’s just something created by the Access Key. I should know better.”

Hisame puts a hand on Izanami’s shoulder before fading away.

“I understand what you mean,” Anubis said. “In my line of work, I solve cases. Every puzzle has a solution, but death has no cure.”

Izanami looks down, ruminating on Anubis’ words.

“Difficult days will be behind us. If you need someone to talk to, I’d be glad to lend you my ear.”

Izanami smiles, “Thank you, Anubis.”

The storm outside continues to rage. There was nothing we could do until it passes or until daybreak, as per Vidar’s suggestion. Considering how the Visbane is aware of our presence in its domain, it could be actively hunting us as far as we know. We’re better off laying low in the night and make use of daylight tomorrow.

Since our equipment is ruined, I tried asking Lord Mimir for any assistance.

“Sorry, rookie. There is a signal interference. I can’t connect to any outside channels. This storm has a certain energy that messes with electronics so I won’t be much help.”

This is giving me flashbacks to my recent Sasanami excursion. Being disconnected from the outside world with no help once again.

“Rest now, Admin,” Vidar said. “There’s not much we can do for the time being so you can take it easy.”

Her soft voice is very soothing, certainly helps with her persuasion. Still, she’s right. If I’m gonna keep up with them, I need to have all my strength.

“I’ll stay by the entrance so you won’t feel too cold, Admin.”

“Er, no it’s alright, Vidar. I’m pretty warm already.”

She remained adamant about keeping a safe distance just to make sure. Izanami prepared a dry space for me to lie on. Despite my role as administrator, it felt more like they were looking out for me. My exhaustion begins to creep up on me and I give in. I swaddled myself in a sleeping bag and closed my eyes.

Though I manage to get some sleep, it wasn’t long before I jolted awake, dreaming about a sudden fall. The stress of this mission must be getting to me. It’s bad enough we had no leads now half of our team is missing too. And it was still a few hours before daybreak so we can continue our search.

I exhale. I’d given up trying to sleep for the time being.

“...it’s part of the job. I’m there where I need to be, just as I am now.”

“What about you, Vidar? Does your work with Aether Gazer also bring you to many places?”

“I am mostly assigned in the polar regions. My days over there are very similar to this.”

I can hear Izanami asking Vidar and Anubis about the outside world. She sounded almost excited. Despite the bleak answers she receives, her curiosity remains the same.

“Up there, I survive,” she continued. “In Ain Soph, I get to live.”

“I would like to visit Ain Soph,” Izanami said. “I would like to visit the place where Admin lives and see for myself how wonderful it is.”

“Perhaps you can visit once this is over,” Vidar suggested.

“Any recommendations you have?”

“Leviathan loves to visit the aquarium sometimes. And I frequent the dog park with my dog, Fenrir.”

“That’s a beautiful name,” Anubis chimed in.

“Thank you. I got his name from a book. I thought it suited his nature well. He can be quite ferocious when we hunt.”

“Upu was quite the hunter too. A great partner during our missions.”

“Oh. I think they would’ve gotten along.”

“I think so too.”

I recall what Shu told me earlier about being a bridge between the three groups. I knew each of them individually and I know they’re reserved in their own little bubble most of the time. I didn’t even think we could socialize this much during the mission. But seeing the three of them by the fire, all from different backgrounds united by something other than being Modifiers, I realize Shu might be wrong. They don’t need me to be a bridge. They built their own.

Gradually, sleep returns to me once more. I drift off to the soft voices echoing in this cave. Something about listening to them warming up to each other was calming. I was almost certain by morning they would know each other more than I did them. The last thing I heard was Vidar talking about a ship.

In lieu of my usual alarm clock, I am gently awakened by Izanami. I stir, adjusting my eyes to the dark. The fire had long died and dawn was approaching. The storm from the previous night has ceded and a thick wall of snow blocked the cave mouth but Vidar, being experienced, was able to carve an exit.

Before leaving, Anubis leaves some marking outside the cave. We watched him curiously, waiting for his explanation.

“I’m marking it to know our location, in case we return to this place.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“There was something that bothered me yesterday about the scent stopping dead in the middle of the woods and how we found ourselves back down despite heading up.” He finishes carving on the stone and turns to face us. “My theory is this Visbane can warp our surroundings and as long as we’re in the snow, we’re likely to end up in another location.”

Anubis gave us a moment to process what he just said. This would explain the strange out of season winter. This Visbane can warp reality to a certain degree.

“The blizzard…” Vidar said. “Before we got separated, there was a blizzard.”

“There was heavy snowfall before that too. Before we got lost,” I added.

“Regardless, we have other priorities at the moment,” Anubis said. “Let’s get moving.”

It was a different kind of serene once we stepped out. The whole forest was asleep and the sky was clear. The last dredges of moonlight covered the snow banks and touched the crowns of trees. I couldn’t help but pause and take it all in.

Vidar notices I have fallen behind and waits for me.

“Sorry about that,” I say, jogging to catch up to the group. “It’s just… I never thought it could be so beautiful.”

“I know what you mean, Admin,” she replied. “There were nights like this up on the polar plains too.”

Perhaps I was wrong about my earlier assumption. The winter can be scenic too.

Sadly, this respite did not last long as the first light of dawn begins to peak. But we moved better with visibility on our side. Minutes turn to hours. Our situation since we entered the perimeter has barely changed, if not for the worse. Snow begins to fall once more and our defenses heightened. What a way to remind me of the summer heat I took for granted.

"Beep-beep, rookie! I seem to have picked up on a faint signal."

The call from Lord Mimir made us stop in our tracks.

"What is it? Is it the others?"

"Negative, rookie. I detect an open rift about a kilometer northeast from here."

Since we arrived, we had been desperate for leads. We pray Lord Mimir is able to hold onto to this signal as we rush northeast. The connection was breaking, interfered by an invisible force it seems; the same interference that caused most of our comms to go down. This never stopped us from trying.

The signal was taking us into another part of the deep woods. As we move, the air grew colder and the ground almost seemed to freeze us on each step. The atmosphere felt like closing in on us. I can feel my temperature drop with every step forward and I wonder if it would be better if I just stay back and let the Modifiers deal with this.

I almost failed to notice an additional layer of insulation on my shoulders.

Vidar had removed one of her heavy coats and wrapped me in it. I begin to protest but she was quick to stop me.

“You need it more than me.”

She moves past me, axe in hand, and ready to clear a path. With a mighty swing, she leads us into a frozen lake. Nothing else seemed amiss except the signal we were chasing was completely severed.

“The interference is strong here, rookie. I can’t pick up any more signal.”

“Not again,” I say, getting a little frustrated that we were going in circles.

“It’s alright, Admin. That was more than enough of a lead. We’ll just have to search around,” Anubis assured me.

While we discussed a few details, I notice Izanami being drawn to the lake. She hovers over the frozen water and towards the center. At this point, we all turned to look at her. She looked uneasy, sensing something in the air that we could not.

She summons Curse of Yomi in her hand and attempts to cut the air in front of her. The space around the cut shifts, revealing an open rift to the source layer.

“Our enemy is capable of illusions,” she said. “I have my fair share of space-altering illusions.”

Curiously, the rift was small compared to what we expected. We soon find out why there was an effort to hide it.

“The missing children!”

Without a doubt, it was the missing kids we were looking for. One of them was even missing a flip-flop.

“How long have they been here? This much exposure to the Source Layer can’t be good for them.”

With haste, Anubis reaches over and checks on them. They were cold and unconscious but breathing quite slowly. The kids were in a deep state of cryosleep.

One by one, we pull them out. They remain undisturbed, worryingly so. Anubis ensures us that this can be reversed but we have to move fast.

A gut-wrenching screech was heard from behind. The air around us grew even colder than before. Flurries of snow began to swirl around the lake, cutting us off from any chance of escape. Yuki-Onna has appeared before us, more clearly this time and definitely not an illusion. A tattered pale kimono drapes over a bony structure. Long dark hair cover most of its face but we can see a gaping mouth everytime it cries out.

"It's the enemy. I'll take care of them."

Wielding her Frost Fang, Vidar makes quick work of the ice spears thrown her way. Izanami also joins the fight as Hisame appears.

With Vidar cutting down a path for them, they easily flank their target and overwhelm it. It screeches once more, quite ear-piercing but they endure. Blades and ice clash, shatter, and scatter. It counters with a burst of ice shards and the Modifiers are hit. Yuki-Onna attempts to trap them in an icy shackle. But they prevail and stagger to their feet with their weapons drawn. The axe counters the ice while the swords go for the monster. They move so coordinated as if they had been teammates long before.

Meanwhile, Anubis and I stayed behind keeping the unconscious children safe. While they don’t seem to be corrupted, they still required immediate decontamination and medical attention. Unfortunately, there was no exit point visible in the blizzard and we weren't sure for how long Vidar and Izanami can keep the Visbane busy before it starts going for us next. I see Anubis' expression scrambling for a way out.

"Admin, are you familiar with warp nodes?"

"Uh, I think the Cryptics may have had lectures about that," I reply, a bit confused.

He summons Upu into the rift. “Upu will find us a path. When he returns, we take the kids and follow him,” he instructed.

“Wait, we’re going into the Source Layer?!”

“We have no choice. We’ll have to be quick before the Visbane notices us.”

As if on cue, Yuki-Onna spots our attempt of escaping with the kids and heads our way. Anubis readies his gun as she screeches closer but Hisame appears out of nowhere and blocks her.

“Go!” Izanami called out.

I am pulled by Anubis into the rift.

It was hard enough to navigate on my own but carrying the rescuees through the Source Layer was another layer of challenging. We follow Upu as quickly as we can. I have never been in the Sasanami Source Layer, not like it’s a normal thing for me. My only other experience with being in the Source Layer was from my early missions as part of Overture Squad. After that I’ve just been busy in the Surface Layer. I certainly don’t miss it. Being under here is overwhelming and trippy.

The warp node we took transported us to a rift somewhere on the outskirts of Shimogyou. The sunlight on my face and the immediate heat smothering my body told me we were finally out of the winter anomaly.

Anubis quickly connected back to the CORG base requesting immediate assistance and soon they arrive to our location. Within minutes, we were surrounded by CORG and I don’t think I’ve felt this much relief in days.

The kids were taken by their medical unit. They assure us the children are okay but they will be having memory wipes after a bit of questioning.

I turn to Anubis whose relieved expression was instantly replaced by stern focus.

“I have to go back, Admin. They’re still fighting Yuki-Onna and I can’t leave without Bastet and the others.”

Anubis leaves before I can say a word. I am stopped by an agent who insisted I needed to be decontaminated due to my exposure in the Source Layer.

“No, not yet. I need to go back,” I protested.

“Are you out of your mind? It’s too dangerous!” said the agent. “Besides, we’re going to close that rift soon. We can’t have civilians accidentally walking into that.”

“But my team—” I blurt out. Knowing the kids were safe, I was determined to go back and help my team. I push past the agent and hurry towards the rift before they have a chance to close it. My body hits the cold ground and I see I made it back in but now I was without a guide.

I exhale. Stay calm, remember the path. The Source Layer can be very disorienting. I try my best to remember the path we took hoping I can trace it back to the open rift on the other side. But there are really no landmarks under here.

“Rookie, you need to go back! Have you forgotten you’re a target for Visbanes?!” I hear Lord Mimir exclaim.

“Not without them,” I reply. “I need to go back and help them.”

“You’re not gonna make it to them in time but you can still turn back now.”

I start to feel an immense pressure but I head on. It appears the warp node we went through was nowhere to be found. I wandered towards familiar spaces and before long, a horde of Visbanes was heading my way.

I ready my gun and aim but I can only hold back so much. They keep coming in more numbers than I can hit them with.

It was becoming too much for me to bear and I struggle to even keep up, never lowering my only line of defense. I wasn’t sure how long I can take this anymore.

“Freeze!”

The horde suddenly freezes in place and in a blink of an eye, they were cut six ways instantly shattering them to data shards. I cough a bit, looking up to see a small figure approach me with haste.

“Admin! Admin! What are you doing here?!”

It was Leviathan. She helps me up to my feet. Worry paints her face as she checks me for any injuries.

“Leviathan! It’s really you!” I say, relief washing over me.

“Admin, are you alright?” Bastet said, sheathing her blades. Behind her, I see Kagutsuchi keeping watch for any more hordes that may appear.

“Everyone is here…” I was so relieved to see them.

“Why are you in the Source Layer? And where is Master?”

My relief was replaced with worry once more. “Yuki-Onna… we have to help them!”

It was a dance, a deadly clash of blades and ice. Despite their control over ice, Vidar and Izanami were losing to Yuki-Onna’s advantage of the environment. She was back to using illusions again, successfully hitting Vidar and rendering her immobile for a bit. Anubis came in at the right time, saving Izanami a limb or two. He joins this dance and the three of them moved so seamlessly, communicating through eyes and action. But even with the three of them combined, the Visbane persisted.

It stops and prepares an attack. Being surrounded by illusions and ice, the three go on defensive mode; awaiting for the attack. But it never came.

“Cleansing Fire.”

Instead, a burst of flames swept from behind them. The illusions shatter and reveal the real Yuki-Onna somewhere on the lake. The three stagger to their feet and look back.

“Master! Master!” Leviathan cried out. “I’m here!”

“Looks like we made it in time,” Bastet sighed.

“Leviathan? Admin?” Vidar uttered.

Leviathan rushes towards her Master’s side. “Master, I was so worried! We got lost in the blizzard and we went into the Source Layer and—” Vidar pats the little girl who was on the verge of tears. “You did well, Leviathan.”

This reunion was interrupted by a screech from the Visbane, letting us know the fight’s not over yet.

Anubis and Bastet rushed first. Like beasts in the shadows, they move swift and silent flanking the monster from both sides.

Vidar and Leviathan follow closely behind. The axe propels the anchor high into the air and strikes the enemy from above. With multiple targets, Yuki-Onna was overwhelmed and hadn’t enough time to cast illusions again. I provided cover the best I did but unlike these Modifiers, my strength was slowly leaving me.

“Kagutsuchi!” Izanami called.

He nods. “This calamity stops here.”

Izanami and Kagutsuchi prepare an attack of fire and ice. As Yuki-Onna gets up once more and also prepares to counter, they cast their attack. It was rather beautiful; a frostfire waltz of sorts.

The others moved out of the way as frost and fire rained down. This time, Yuki-Onna cried. Its voice resembling not of a corrupted monster but of a human. Her cries were full of sorrow and pain and then… silence. Her form slowly fades into data shards until all that’s left was nothing.

The frozen lake begins to thaw, prompting an immediate move from us before we might fall into the water. The battle was over and the mountain who was slumbered in winter begins to awaken back into summer. It took awhile but the green slowly returns and the sunlight seeped through the disappearing dark clouds. The Modifiers rest by a blue spring lake, earning quite a start to their vacation. It was the last thing I see before my vision darkens and I fall to my knees.

I stir, a haze of voices all around me. I find myself on a med tent. I sit up, gathering my wits; still exhausted from the day I had.

Where am I?

“Admin,” whispered a gentle voice beside me. It was Vidar. She leans forward and I can feel a sudden chill on my body. “You’re alright.”

“I… Yeah. Wait, what happened?”

“You passed out after the fight,” she explained. “They told me you’re alright but you need to rest.”

I hear Leviathan yawn. It was the first time I noticed she fell asleep beside me, her face buried in her arms. Poor thing must’ve been exhausted.

“Where is everyone?”

The tent flaps open and in walk Anubis and Bastet.

“Oh, Admin! You’re awake!” Bastet exclaimed. “You got us worried back there, you just dropped so suddenly.”

“We decontaminated you and checked you for any injuries. You’re alright,” Anubis explained.

“I see. Thank you. How are the kids?”

“They’re all better too. We just questioned them earlier about what happened to them. They’ll be back with their families soon.”

A beep came from Bastet’s terminal. “Oh, looks like we’re needed somewhere, Senpai.”

“CORG is just about wrapping up here. We still have other matters to attend to.”

“Bye, Admin! We’ll be back.” Bastet waved goodbye and closed the tent flaps.

I sighed. It was over. Sasanami is safe once more.

“Were you guys hurt? That Visbane was a lot tougher than I realize.”

“We’re okay. Maybe just a bit tired,” Vidar replied. “I’m glad you weren’t hurt, Admin, but jumping back into the Source Layer was very foolish of you.”

“Well, you’re my team. I couldn’t just leave you behind. I had to be there.”

“You did not need to be, it was very dangerous,” her expressions softens, “But thank you. You’re my family, Administrator. I will protect you no matter what.”

Leviathan begins to wake up. When she sees I am awake, she jumps up, immediately recounting her time with Bastet and Kagutsuchi and how proud her Master was when she came to save the day.

Another late night at the Aether Gazer General Office. Shu flicks through the reports. Having just finished reading Pheasant Squad’s report of their time in Shashvat, she moves on to the next one: Winter Squad in Sasanami.

Two reports were included in the file; one copy from CORG and one submitted by Winter Squad. She begins quietly, taking a few notes and sipping her coffee. Lifting her mug, she realizes she was all out. Shu sighs. This’ll be her third cup. Not as much caffeine intake as other late nights but the stack of documents on her desk tells her she might as well prepare three more cups. In the back of her head, she can hear Poseidon reprimanding her for drinking too much coffee. Her personal record was nine. That was a long night.

“Knock, knock!”

Shu looks up from her nest of papers and see Baldur by the door. She was holding two take-out coffees.

“Mind if I keep you company?”

Shu tidies as best as she could. Baldur sets one cup down, careful not to spill. As soon as Shu stacks a few papers to the side, she takes it, inhaling its rich aroma. Baldur takes a seat beside her, reaching for a file.

“Do you need help with these?” she asks.

“I’m good. Might need more of these though,” Shu said, lifting her cup.

Baldur chuckles. “I know we’re Modifiers but you need to slow down on that.”

She sees a file with the CORG logo on it. “What’s this then?” she asked, reaching for the file. Shu was busy reading the one by Winter Squad.

“Recent Sasanami excursion. The one with the winter anomaly,” Shu replied.

“Oh, I heard about that. Admin was also there,” Baldur said, flicking through the pages. “Oh dear, an Encroacher-type. Nasty work.”

“Yeah, how unfortunate for the mother. Losing her child to a Visbane and getting corrupted afterwards.”

“Quite impressive of Agent Anubis to find this out. His reputation precedes him.”

Baldur finishes the CORG report. “To think her grief manifested into that..."

Shu hands her the other report. “Indeed.”

Baldur reads it and after awhile blurts out, “Oh, this was quite foolish of Admin. They never should’ve done that. Lucky Leviathan found them. How did they end up on the Source Layer again?”

She flicks through the file again, not finding the answer to her question. Shu decided to fill her in, even pointing to which part it was mentioned.

“After they were separated, Leviathan was with Agent Bastet of CORG and Kagutsuchi of the Karasugo family. The Visbane was quite hot on their tail that they decided it was safer to wander in the Source Layer.”

“Interesting. Grieving mother, missing children… do you think it was after Leviathan?”

Shu gives it a thought, considering it reasonable.

“We may never know. We can only hope they are at peace and that their next life would be kinder.”

For years, the Karasugo family were isolated from the Sasanami public. But ever since Sendou Karasugo took over, the family has slowly debuted themselves to the public, earning quite the praise and inevitable criticism. But such things are part of being in charge. Today the Reitan Palace was restored and tonight was a celebration for the family and the people. Kamigyou was bright with festivities, extending to some parts of Shimogyou as well.

“Come on, Admin, hurry! They have ice cream in that booth!”

Leviathan runs faster than I can keep up. Upon reaching the booth, I was beginning to regret my promise of treating her to ice cream.

“FREE ICE CREAM WITH EVERY 3RD PURCHASE”

The sign seems to mock me but a promise is a promise. She saved my life after all.

“Leviathan, be careful,” Vidar reminded her, wary that she may stain her yukata. Vidar wore a similar one, in blue and white tones with a fur collar. Kuninotokotachi insisted it was the proper way to celebrate festivals in Sasanami.

“Hi-hi, Admin!”

A familiar voice called behind me. Bastet was wearing a pink and purple yukata. Beside her was Anubis, dressed casually but sharply.

“Hello, Admin,” he greeted.

“You guys made it!” I exclaim.

“Of course! I wasn’t going to miss this, Admin. You should see how much I had to convince Senpai though.” Bastet giggles.

“Miss Bastet!” Leviathan called.

“Oh, Levi-chan!” Bastet jogged towards the booth. It seemed that she and Leviathan really hit it off.

“Questioner!”

I turn to see Izanami in red. She was stunning in her spider lily and flame attire. Beside her, Kagutsuchi closely followed dressed rather elegantly.

“We meet again, Admin. Oh, and everyone is here too,” Kagutsuchi remarked.

Izanami takes my hand. “Questioner, I have much to show you over here.” She hovers towards a booth where Pheasant Squad was trying on different accessories. I simply let her lead as the rest of the team enjoys the festivities.

The streets were astir with celebration. For tonight, the Modifiers were just people enjoying the summer. Sendou Karasugo observes festival-goers from the balcony. In a few moments, the firework show begins. But before that, he is to give an opening speech first. He fiddles with a bit of paper, filled with notes and suggestions on what he is to say. He was unsure what kind of reception he will receive when he steps onto the podium but he surprises himself with optimism as he catches a glimpse of his sister, Senba, somewhere in the crowd. Seeing her bright smile was bittersweet for him.

“Lord Sendou, we’re about to begin.”

The crowd silences as he takes to the podium, declaring the festival to be a success and encouraging merriment. Cheers erupt from the audience and the fireworks commence. He soon joins his sister and the people she has come to know as friends. And Sendou couldn’t be prouder.

In between the lights and festivities, Anubis finds Vidar alone, surprisingly so, as Leviathan can quite literally cling onto Vidar if she wanted to. But he takes this opportunity to give her an envelope.

“This is all I could find about the Schlegel’s whereabouts. As for the researcher you call Clint Berg, I’m afraid there isn’t a lot of available info on him. But you might find this one interesting.”

Vidar’s eyes widened. Her hands seem to shake, taking the envelope from his hands. She doesn’t open it immediately. Instead, she simply stares at it—contemplating, hesitating. Anubis observes her quietly.

She finally exhales and tucks the envelope in her yukata sleeve, thanking him. In the distance, they hear a call for a puppet show starting soon. They walk back together in silence.

Notes:

if you think this team up is super random, i got the idea from flanuering when i saw a job assigned Anubis, Izanami, and Vidar together and i mentally created a venn diagram of them and thought they would make an interesting team given their backgrounds.

this is my first time writing sci-fi and i am aware of the liberties i took here. also i forgot about Mimir until like halfway (• ▽ •;)

more info: i really liked incorporating their actual in-game voicelines. this game has really good dialogue.

even more info: aside from a fan-made Visbane, i also added my fan ult between two pairs who deserve it
