Chapter 1: a myth

Chapter Text

Long, long ago, not long after the days of King Resh, there was a prince. He was no ordinary prince, though, but a prince of Darkness.

He was not always a prince, though. He was once a child of the Light, like you and I. But he was not happy with his life, and, seeing this, the Darkness decided to tempt him.

One dark night, the child was making a pilgrimage in the Eye of Eden, up to the heart of the Storm. All the way to the top, the child was plagued by his unhappiness. The Darkness saw this, and took the opportunity to strike.

As the child fulfilled his sacred duties, the Darkness spoke to him through the Storm.

"I know you are unhappy," the Darkness whispered. "I know you seek more from life than what life has already given you. I can give you what you seek, and more besides."

The child was curious, and asked, "How is that possible? I already have the Light inside of me. There is nothing else in the world that I could ask for." But in truth, the child was afraid, for the voice had seen his unhappiness.

"I can give you a life above life," the Darkness replied. "I can give you power that the Light could never give you. I can give you a purpose beyond your tiresome duties."

What the voice offered sounded wonderful to the unfortunate child. "May I have these powers?"

"Anyone may have them. All you must do is cast aside your Core, pluck a glowing shard from the Storm that rages around you, and put it in your Core's place."

This made the child uneasy. "Won't that kill me, though? I am a child of Light, and the Darkness in the Storm will kill me."

If the Darkness had a face, it would have smiled. "To gain life, it must be lost first."

The child, still a bit uneasy but mostly reassured, did as the Darkness bade him, and changed his Core for a piece of the Storm.

When the child realized what had happened, he was dismayed, but it was already too late. "No longer are you a child of the Light," the Darkness in the Storm told him. "Fear not: I will protect you as one of my own, and make you Prince of the Eye of Eden, for I am the Storm that rages around you."

The child's fear was drained away by the Storm, and all that was left in him was what the Storm wanted to stay.

When the Elders of the Kingdom discovered what had happened to the child, they called for the children of the Light to lend them their Lights. With this light, they sealed the gate to Eden, which remains closed to this day, except when the time to fulfill our sacred duties within arrives.

The Prince of Eden was not happy about the Elders locking his own gate on him. "Your magic will not hold forever," he yelled at them as the gate began to close. "Give me a hundred years, and I will break open these gates that you have sealed with an army of Lights with and army of Darkness. And when these gates break, I will have dominion over all the Kingdom, with the Storm as my queen, and you will rue the day that you closed these gates on me."

When the gates finally closed, the Kingdom breathed a sigh of relief. The Darkness was strong, but not strong enough to break the magic of all the Elders combined.

Content, the children of the Light went on about their lives, hardly even thinking about the Prince ever again.

But the Prince remembered them. Even if they did not.
