Chapter Text

Chapter 1: A slight redecoration

“Fitz Simmons.

Footsteps echoed, steadily moving closer to the group of boys.
“That’s beautiful singing today- almost everyone hit that high
note…Are you sure you want to be a choir boy? It’s not for
everyone… It requires skill.

Fitz felt the entire choirs eyeballs swivel round to him, his collar
felt too tight suddenly.
“Yes, I would think so.
” His already flushed
face turned even redder when his father smiled gently at him.
“That’s no problem, just some practice.
” He turned to face the rest
of the group.
“Moving on from that, I hope you all have a good
evening.

The rustle of shutting choir books and robes filled the empty
church as the boys filed through the door, one-by-one, saying
goodbye to a still smiling Father Simmons.
Fitz went the opposite way however, weaving through the pews
until he reached a splintered black door.
“Where are you going Fitz?”
“I’m meeting up with Lizzie in the basement.
” He had his hand on
the door handle, watching his father move closer with a
disapproving look on his face.
Fitz’s hand tightened around the door knob. He joined the choir,
he handles the donation every single day and he was awake all
night making the bread for communion. And what does he get,
gently patronized,
“I know you love making bread, I just wish it
wasn’t so dense.
” condescended,
“Are you sure you are counting
that right?” and felt watched and judged like he was an animal in
a circus, made to perform day after day only to be laughed at
instead, so gosh darn it Fitz was going to the basement.
His father sighed. Before he could say anything else, Fitz had
escaped.
