Work Text:
Tails had known Cream for years. She was always the sweet, kind-hearted one - the one who saw the best in everyone. She had been young when they first met, but now?
Now, she was growing up.
One day, while working on a new gear upgrade for the Tornado, Cream walked into his workshop, carrying a tray of tea and cookies.
"Mr. Tails, you’ve been working all day! You need a break," she said with a warm smile.
Tails, half-covered in oil, looked up. "Oh! Uh... thanks, Cream."
As he took the tea from her, he realized something. He wasn’t looking at her like Sonic’s little sidekick anymore. He wasn’t looking at her like the kid who used to tag along on adventures.
He was looking at her like a friend. Like... something more.
And the thought made his heart race.
A few days later, Tails would realize that it didn’t take long for Sonic to pick up on the shift.
"Hey, buddy," Sonic smirked, leaning against the Tornado. "You’ve been spending a lot of time with Cream lately, huh?"
Tails, mid-wrench turn, nearly dropped his tool, his face bright red. "Wha-?! N-no! I mean, yes, but-! I-it’s not like that!"
Sonic chuckled. "C’mon, dude. I’ve seen the way you look at her. And I gotta say... I’m proud of ya."
Tails blinked. "Proud?"
Sonic nodded, his smirk softening into something more genuine. "After what happened with Cosmo, I know how hard it was for you to open up again. But Cream? She’s good for you, bro."
Tails rubbed the back of his head, feeling both embarrassed and grateful.
"You really think so?"
"I know so," Sonic said. "And hey – if Vanilla’s cool with it, you’ve got nothing to worry about."
Tails sighed. Maybe Sonic was right. Maybe... just maybe, it was okay to let himself feel happy again.
One evening, Tails and Cream took a walk through a quiet flower meadow. The sky was painted in hues of orange and pink, and the fireflies had just begun to appear.
Tails, usually lost in his thoughts, found himself fully present in the moment.
Cream, walking beside him, giggled. "You know, Mr. Tails, you always seem so serious when you work. But when you’re like this, you look... happy."
Tails glanced at her, his heart skipping a beat. "Yeah... I guess I am."
They stopped by a small pond, the reflection of the stars shimmering in the water.
"Tails?" Cream said softly.
"Yeah?"
She fidgeted slightly, her long ears twitching. "I... I really like spending time with you."
Tails felt warmth spread across his face. He knew exactly what she meant.
And for the first time in a long while, he let himself embrace that feeling.
"I really like spending time with you too, Cream."
As they sat under the stars, talking and laughing, Tails realized something important.
He wasn’t moving on from Cosmo.
He was moving forward towards something new – something beautiful.
And for the first time, he wasn’t afraid.
