Work Text:

Ena was not the one who saved Mafuyu. As hard to swallow as it is, this is a fact, the one and only truth. It was Kanade, not her. All along, it was always Kanade. And today, it was Kanade that Mafuyu chose.

Ena had regrets, why wasn't she here when Mafuyu needed her ? Why did she keep a distance between them, while she could have listened, she could have been by her side, she could have been the one who saved her ? But now it was all too late.

She was genuinely relieved that Mafuyu had been able to leave her toxic home, but deep inside her, Ena was jealous. Jealous of her dear friend, of the one who helped her too, of Kanade. And she hated herself for that. She was not allowed to envy the one who gave her a reason to keep on drawing, when all she was doing was running away from what she loved. She was not allowed to envy someone because they were the one present for the girl she liked, when all Ena did was watching from the sidelines.

There still was this evening, the only time Ena was here for Mafuyu, when she had the purple-haired girl sleepover. But all she did was out of pure egoism, of finally being able to be near her crush, to have her for herself and no one else. She drew her portrait, using the occasion to watch her close, to analyze every line of her face. Mafuyu was only trying to escape home, and all her savior did was taking advantage of the situation for selfish motives !

But what could Ena had done to stop what she was witnessing every day, the subtle change between the composer and the writer, something she had no place to be in. Should she have made a move this night, taking advantage of Mafuyu's weakness ? It was not like she did not consider the idea.

She had tried to make a move, to hug the runaway, to tell her soft words, that she would be happy to have her here forever, but it didn't felt right. The timing was not right. So she stayed at the place she always had, watching things unfold without playing any main role, just being the supporting character who would never get the hand of the heroin.

Mafuyu would never know what Ena felt, and it was for the best. If living with Kanade was what would finally make her life easier and more enjoyable, then Ena had no right to stop what would come after. Even if it meant one day being the bridesmaid of the woman she had always loved...
