Chapter 1: Backstrory of Lyle and Selene

Chapter Text

Selene and Lyle are high school students in a world where everyone has power. Although their world has conquered climate problems and is in a long period of peace, it is full of corruption. The government and institutions don't bring full justice, because of the super-rich who think they can do what they want just because they have lots of money. And unfortunately that's what happens.
So the two hightschoolers, tired of having to put up with these injustices, decided to become vigilantes, night executioners who kill those whom the legal system does not arrest. They leave no clues, they act at a distance, they play a role so different from them, that they almost have a split personality.
They are cunning, they are arrogant, they are untraceable.
They are Nives and Xander.

Selene: with her power she can use nitrogen and water in the air to freeze things, create objects made of ice, controlling them telepathically, but also snow and, using much of her energy, also blizzards. She has a limit on her powers, and when she reaches it, her body freezes, until she recharges (she does it by reabsorbing the ice she created.) Technically she could freeze at will, thawing in seconds releasing the ice around her in a powerful area attack, but after that she loses consciousness for a couple of minutes, which is annoying in combat.

Lyle: his power consists in having both hemispheres present in the brain, and their lobes, much more developed than normal, endowing it with great memory and hyperdeveloped senses. Thanks to this, he is the leader between the two, despite the fact that they want to make their opponents understand otherwise. He is able to devise bombproof plans and even sense a moving projectile, successfully dodging it. His aim is infallible and he manages to hold his nerve even in critical situations, emerging victorious.

Both know martial arts, and are black belts in judo. As a sport Lyle does parkour, and Selene knive throwing, but as kids they did judo.

Nives: Capable of killing in cold blood, against many enemies she has a thirst for blood that makes her even more dangerous. He has an annoying, arrogant and cheeky character, the result of a need to distract or anger the opponent. Although she seems to take nothing seriously, in difficult situations she has a serious attitude that manages to give you goosebumps. After a personal incident, when Selene feels extremely angry, this personality tends to emerge, even if she can handle it.

Xander: He kills in cold blood, unlike his partner he is silent and when he speaks the atmosphere cools down. He is apathetic, shows no emotion, and follows Nives' orders without question. To balance the disadvantage between his power and that of Nives, he uses high-tech weapons and gadgets, effectively always having an ace up his sleeve. Over time, Xander's apathy affected Lyle's emotions, complicating his mental state even more.

Chapter 2: A step in the void

Summary:

This chapter took a while to come out, sorry for the wait!

Our two protagonist are about to start an adventure, hope you are as exited as me!

Chapter Text

Lyle sat on the couch of their Refuge, hidden from all eyes in the old cellar of a warehouse near where the two boys lived. He was reading a book, while Selene was tinkering with a spherical object.
«Staring at it and tinkering with it won’t make you understand how it works.» commented Lyle without lifting his eyes from the book.
Selene puffed up. «It’s different from when we were trapped in the television universes, after we got out of that loop it changed and I want to understand how it works now.». She turned the ball in her hands, looking for any button that could activate it. The surface was smooth to the touch, with some slits that did not open.
The girl was about to give up, when she put a fingernail in one of the slots, and with a slight pressure it opened, revealing something like a keyboard. She left it, taking a half step back, but the ball remained suspended in mid-air, making a white noise.
Lyle finally lowered his eyes from the book, and stood up, standing next to Selene.
«Wow» he did.
«Ops» shrugged the girl with guilty air.
The boy approached the ball cautiously, trying to type something on the keyboard.
«We can choose a world to visit.» said Lyle with a spark of excitement, «What do you say?»
Selene smiled at him and fist-bumped «Obvious». The friend bumped back and typed something. A moment later a white portal opened, illuminating the room. To not separate themselves they took hands and, with the sphere in hand, crossed it.

Their eyes took some time to get used to the light of the room. They were in a modest apartment, in a living room. In the middle of the room was a low table with some documents on top. It was not the first time they had traveled between dimensions, they knew that on those sheets there would be a summary of their life in that world: ID cards, school enrollments, purchase documents of the house where they were and a map of the city.
After a short tour they discovered that they had separate rooms, a study, a bathroom, a kitchen and a living room. In the study there was a secret compartment with weapons and technological gadgets. Lyle hid the ball in there: they would have needed it if they were going to go home. Something they certainly wanted to do.
Selene leaned against the doorpost, mischievous look.
«Tell me "mister genius", how long will we stay here?» asked the young woman.
«How much we want: it’s a fictional world. The concept of time is variable, and then we can leave whenever we want.» shrugged Lyle.
Then he thought of something.
«Why don’t you go for a walk? I know where we are, but you don’t. Guess if you can.» she smiled cleverly.
«Ok.» answered Selene with confidence, «You will see that I will guess in record time.»
She took a jacket and went out, closing the door behind her. Lyle entered the living room, turned on a computer and read the mail, but under the pile of papers, a letter caught his attention. A familiar stamp made him smile: he had made a good choice.

...

Selene laced her coat. Her shoes chuckled on the fire escape. When she got to the roof she looked around.

From there she had a good view of the night city, the lights of lanterns and streetlamps illuminated the streets by day, but above them it was all dark.

Perfect for her.

She stood on the roof ledge, stretched out and stepped into the void.
A thin layer of ice formed under her foot, preventing her from falling. She took another step and the same thing happened.

In a second, without hesitation, she jumped backwards, falling headlong into the void. Under her hands, stretched out in front of her, ice allowed her to make a wheel and get back on its feet, gliding through the air on those layers. She was not afraid of falling because she trusted her power, and knew that it would not disappoint.

Running and doing acrobatics, she arrived on a very familiar bridge.

«The San Francisco bridge.» she whispered.

She turned her head: There were several Chinese lanterns above the streets, the buildings were modern and she was definitely on the red bridge. A single solution came to her mind.

«Eh...» sighed Selene, dropping her arms on her hips, chuckling.

She looked where she had come from. And thought of the letters on the table.
«You’re a nerd, my dear Lyle.» she chuckled before stepping into the void and running through the streets of San Fransokyo.

Chapter 3: A burger-bot, a goo-man and kids LARPing

Chapter Text

With a jump she came back to hover in the sky, while, telephone in hand she wrote to Lyle. The night sky was quiet, but as the saying goes: "After the calm there is the storm".
Or was it the other way around?
In any case Selene was tense, ready to snap in the event of problems.

Certainly she did not expect to be hit by a giant robo-burger-or-whatever that fired ketchup.

The robot fell on her, making them both fall on a nearby roof. Selene instinctively rotated the dial of her watch: from it particles of fabric came out, the clothes she wore replaced those of the suit, that was forming rapidly.

A mask covered Selene’s face and her hair gathered in an orderly braid dotted with transparent stones.
On the clock screen disappeared the icon of the suit, replaced by the girl’s clothes.
The suit consisted of a durable fabric, exclusive to the Heroes, a mask and a belt with daggers of different sizes and blades. The costume was in shades of gray, with blue details on the hips, belt and mask.
Lyle’s was similar, but with yellow details.

All the "change" happened in a span of two seconds, she stood up at the very moment when the braid finished tying. The hamburger stood up too, straightening his head that had turned in an impossible position, making Nives shiver at the thought that the one with the crooked neck could be her.
The robot did not look at her, but immediately turned to where he had arrived and, as if he was waiting for someone, gazing at the horizon.Nives slipped away, hiding behind a satellite dish and called Lyle.

He answered almost immediately.

«What? Need a clue?» he said in a joking voice

«No! I know where we are, idiot! I just want to understand why in San Fransokyo there is a robot hamburger mascot that was thrown at me in the middle of the night, and now it seems about to have a moment as a protagonist and sing!». said in a semi shout, careful not to draw the attention of the cyber-burger.

On the other side of the line there was a moment of silence.

«Oh crap.» responded him. «Well, worry not 'cause I think the BH6 will be there soon. You just need to hide and escape as soon as possible, I' ll be there to pick you up». And with that he hung up.

The temptation of throwing the phone across the city was, well... tempting, but she had other priorities at the moment. So she waited.

As her friend predicted, a red fist hit the burger-bot, throwing it in her direction. Luckily it was stopped before reaching her, by some kind of goo with bright green eyes. «Got you»

«It's over, you can't run, give us back the chip you stole.» ordered a young voice she recognized immediately. Hiro and the gang.
Everyone hopped off Baymax and went in attack stances. «Yeah, and bonus, tell us more about Obake» said Gogo.

Nives had no idea who this Obake was, but if she were to be honest, everything was kinda out of place. From untrained eye, this situation looked kinda like a low budget sci-fi sitcom with some kids LARPing. Which given the situation was kinda hilarious, Nives had to admit that.

«Pfft» huffed the goo-man, «Like you've did the other times? I ain't afraid!»

«Well, as you wish.» Honey Lemon threw a orange ball, which goo-man tried, and miserably failed, to dodge. The ball send him to the ground, but the robot got his back and in an instant sprayed some sauce at the heroes, transforming the roof in a ketchup pool. Baymax swiftly dodged and gave him a right hook, the burger dropped something and Fred close behind, launched himself to get it. Goo-man got up and pushed the guy away, taking the chip with him. Nives took the occasion to sneak away, doing what she was best at, disappearing.
She almost reached the edge of the roof, when she slipped on some sauce, attracting the attention of Wasabi, who, a few meters from her, was slicing whatever the goo-man threw at him, engaging eye contact for what it seemed an eternity. Finally Nives got up and jumped. As expected Lyle was there to pick her up with his hoverboard.

«Goodnight madam, where are we going?» asked him, «The apartment, I smell like ketchup.» sighed Nives.
«So terrible?» «Yeah, That roof looked like that time at school with the food war.»
Lyle widened his eyes «THAT bad?!»
«Yeah» admitted her.

Chapter 4: Quite the unusual box

Notes:

sorry for the late publishing, but I'm back with new chapters

Chapter Text

Wasabi wasn't expecting his night to end in a pool of various sausages, but when the warning woke him up, he should had seen it coming. Noodle burger boy stole a powerful chip from Kray tech, and the CEO immediately called Hiro, who warned the gang.
This was a great opportunity to uncover Obake's plans, they had to seize it.

On that roof began the dirtiest battle of all century, and he had experience with dirt: the floor was a pool of ketchup, they were lucky Hiro and Gogo improved the suits so that they wouldn't fall.
Thanks to this advantage they started to get the upper-hand, when something caught his attention: a shadow from the edge of the roof. He turned his head and saw that a girl had slipped over some ketchup, they locked eyes for a few moments, then she got up and jumped down below.
He tried to reach her, but was stopped by Globby, who threw some other rocks at him, which he narrowly dogded.
I the end, they got back the chip, but without solid infos on Obake.

-«Wait a sec, you think that girl you saw was an accomplice?» asked Hiro, «No, but she was strange, I had only one look at her, but... something was not adding up, the fact she fearlessly jumped, or the fact she was there to begin with...» sighed Wasabi. He knew something about her was strange, but what?

«Don't worry, we belive you» reassured him Honey Lemon, «But you have to give us a description, so we can understand better.» she put a hand on his shoulder. Wasabi took a breath and concentrated. Her eyes, the way she got up, and the movement of her hair while she fell, then... something shiny, that despite the dark reflected the nightlife of San Fransokyo.

«She was a blonde girl, maybe your age Hiro, her eyes were clear, maybe light-blue, and, some kind of watch, but again, it was dark.»

«Well, that doesn't narrow it, but we can still work on it.» concluded Gogo, in a somewhat reassuring tone, which calmed Wasabi.

«Sorry, make way, thank you, sorry!» a guy walked next to them with a giant box that almost covered his vision. He seemed young. His hair were brown, with a touch of blonde on the end, he wore a black jacket over a light-green shirt, with some sort of logo on.

«Hey guys!» Suddenly Fred arrived, without pay attention, moving his sign right and left.
«What are yo-whoa!».
The mascot hit the boy with the box, making him trip and fall.
«No!» screamed as the box was launched forward, almost smashing to the ground. The boy launched himself with it, falling a few centimeters away from the box. As it was getting closer to the floor, he closed his eyes, almost as if he was expecting a loud crash, which....

Didn't happen.

A pair of white, marshmallow-like hands caught the box, a few centimeters from crashing, thing that made the boy breathe a sigh of relief.

«Thanks, uhhh, mr... uhhh» he sounded confused, but his tone of voice seemed... too apologetic, maybe? Like a lie. But he he pushed back the thought, after all it was their fault his box almost got smashed.

«I am Baymax, healthcare companion, the box weights too much for a boy your age to carry, I suggest some help next time, otherwise you could hurt yourself.» instructed Baymax.

«Excuse him, he's programmed to analyze phisical and mental problems in everyone, so he can help.» explained Hiro.
The guy nodded, but took the box anyway.
«Well, I'm late for my mechanic class, than for saving my project but I REALLY have to go» excused himself, but got stopped by Gogo.

«Mechanic class?» she asked, «doesn't that begin, like in fifteen minutes?»

«Yes, but this Perpetual motion machine, won't build itself!» argued annoyingly. «So, move out of the way.»
Gogo stopped him again. «Isn't this too heavy to be a perpetual motion machine?»

«I messed up with the materials, OK?» confessed the guy, «It's my first week, in a new city, in a new country, per l'amor del cielo!

» he hissed, trying not to attract attention from passing by students.

He breathed heavily, then saluted with one hand and disappeared into the crowd.

Gogo was left staging there, then approached Fred and pinched his ear, «You have to pay attention on where to go, you could've hurt yourself, or that boy.»

«He was acting a bit strange, don't you think?» pointed out Wasabi, «His whole demeanor was unsettling almost.»

«Yeah, I know, that's why I stopped him, he seemed familiar, but in a negative way.» explained Gogo.

«Mmh» pouted Hiro, which meant he was about to get a revelation, 50% chance: once he and Honey Lemon calculated whether Hiro, when he pouted, got the solution or no, they analyzed all the data and discovered it was like flip a coin, when Fred heard it, he tried to make a bet game out of it, fortunately Gogo intervened.
Aaaaand he lost the train of thoughts.

«Baymax, have you scanned him?» Hiro finally asked

«Of course. My data shows a regular heartbeat, and a very strong muscular structure, but tense to contact. I searched his face across the database of the SFIT and found one result: Lyle Mabilla, 17 years old, Italian, recently moved here to study here at SFIT, he lives in apartment in New Orleans street, number 15.B.» listed the robot.

«Well, that's a lot of info.» commented Fred. «Yeah.» responded in unison the others.

«Alright.» interrupted Wasabi, «We have to go to class now, let's hang out at noodle burger later.»
Everyone nodded in agreement, then they parted ways.

A few minutes later

«..... and I disappeared in the crowd, unfortunately I didn't do a good impression, so maybe you'll have to make way through the stomach.»

"Do I reaaally have to? I don't have much experience with that... kind of... thing"

«You said you wanted some fun, so I added responsibility, it's what we do.» he looked around and saw a girl approaching.
«I have to go, bye». He close the call, and positioned the box on the desk, next to the toolbox.

He opened the first one, the machine lay there, completely build, next to it, her watch, it got broken and unfortunately this was the only place with the materials he needed. Smuggling the machine wasn't easy, but if Baymax were to analyze the box, he would have discovered the watch, which wasn't recommended.

«Now,» he said to himself, holding a screwdriver, «Let's get to work.»
