Resignation.docx

The printer whirs to life and Wonwoo sighs as he waits for the paper to come out of the tray.
Three months. This will be the shortest time he had worked in a company before leaving, but not because of the toxic work environment, the indifference of his managers, or the lousy company management.
No, none of those. In fact, sa Kim Corporation lang siya nakaranas na offeran ng sahod na naaayon sa experience at skills niya plus proper turnover, supportive workmates (kahit technically, nagiisa lang naman siya as a secretary), and good benefits.
All those good things in exchange for one thing.
Isa lang ang request ni Sir Kim Mingyu sa kanya and he made it clear on the very first day.
“I know you will do a good job. Hindi naman kami magha-hire ng hindi competent. But, what is the use of the skills you brag about if you are lazy and tardy? That said, eight a.m. is eight a.m., and if you are late, don’t bother coming in. Pasa ka na lang ng resignation mo. I’ll gladly accept it.”
And that’s not a turn-off for Wonwoo. It’s no problem at all, isip niya. He’s a sleepyhead, yes, pero nagigising siya agad at the first ring of his alarm, hindi rin complicated morning routine niya so he’s always good to go in less than an hour.
He likes to think he’s a punctual employee, always arriving minutes before his shift starts, so the request is no big deal for him.
But, here he is, three months later, resignation at hand, and dragging his shaky feet toward Sir Mingyu’s office.
Plano niyang panuorin yung comeback show ng favorite kpop group niya before matulog and that means no notification should get in the way so his phone was on mute, do not disturb turned on all the way.
Mga five minutes lang naman and Sir Mingyu rarely overstep the boundaries of non-working hours, unless it’s an emergency or something urgent he needs to inform Wonwoo of.
‘Surely nothing could go wrong,’ Wonwoo thinks as he taps on the play button.
He slept with a happy heart, obviously in love with the new song, but woke up in a frenzy, realizing it was nine a.m., making him one hour late and he was nowhere near the office yet.
Again here he is, nine forty-five in the morning, idly standing outside his Sir Mingyu’s office. Hindi niya ito makita dahil nakaclose ang glass door at blinds separating his table and the main office.
Ready na siya para sa galit nito. To make it worse, it was a Monday, one of their busiest days.
So with a nervous heart, multiple job application tabs in his phone, a few copies of his resume and application letter in his bag, because right after this, magjo-job hunt na naman siya, kumatok siya sa pinto.
“Come in.” A deep voice resounds from the office and Wonwoo faces what could be the scariest thing he’ll encounter in his whole career.
“Sir Mingyu….”
He sees Mingyu look up from the paper he is signing and Wonwoo winces when he realizes those are the stack of paper he is supposed to give to Mingyu that morning.
Nakakahiya at si Mingyu pa mismo ang kumuha nito sa table niya.
“Oh. You’re here,” Mingyu says, going back to reading the paper, face barely caring that Wonwoo has arrived.
Wonwoo walks slowly, careful not to make a noise that will agitate the other more, and meekly slides in his resignation paper on Mingyu’s table.
“What’s this?”
“Ano po… Sir, I’m—”
“Ah, right. Wonwoo, can you check on Seungcheol and ask if we can meet in the afternoon? Adjust my schedule if needed. Tell him it’s urgent.”
“Eh?”
“You need to ask his secretary now para magawan ng paraan schedule niya so go.”
“Huh?”
Mingyu looks up at him, eyes empty pero parang nagtatanong ng ‘Are you serious?’
“You heard me the first time.”
It is only then that Wonwoo realizes he is off the hook when Mingyu swiftly slides his resignation letter to the edge of the table, nonchalantly dropping it into the trash bin beside him.
“Ah! Yes po!”
Wonwoo is one step out of the door when Mingyu calls him out again.
“Wonwoo.”
“Po?” Tanong ni Wonwoo habang hinaharap si Mingyu. The CEO is still signing papers and not looking at him.
“Are you okay?”
“Po…?”
“Hindi ka naman napano on your way here? Car, pedestrian accidents or what?”
It only dawns on Wonwoo that Mingyu is asking for an explanation kung bakit siya late.
“Wala po, Sir. I’m sorry po. It’s just I wo—”
“No need. Next time… please, update me, okay? Tumawag ka, or kahit text lang man.”
“Opo, Sir. I’m sorry and thank you po. Hindi na po mauulit.”
“Even if it does happen again, sabihan mo ako. So I’d know where you are and if anything happened to you.”
“Opo. Thank you po, Sir…”
“Hm.”
