David's boots thumped against old wood as he thundered up the stairs of the three story building, pausing to take a few deep, heaving breaths as he reached the apartment he shares with his girlfriend, Suzumi. He opened the door and shut it quietly before setting his bag down on the ground next to Suzumi's discarded pair of white sneakers.
"Suzumi?" he called into the quiet house. "I'm back!"
She didn't respond. David found it strange. Was she currently home at all?
Suddenly David heard a muffled sob come from the bedroom. He blinked once, then started uncertainly towards the room.
He paused at the half open door before pushing it open. Suzumi was sitting on the bed, her long blonde hair hiding her face. Her shoulders were slumped and she was shaking slightly.
David slowly walked over to the side of the bed and put a tentative hand on her shoulder.
"Hey, what's wrong? Are you okay?"
She leaned into his warm touch slightly and shook her head.
"Do you...do you want to talk about it?" he asked quietly.
She shook her head frantically and lifted her head, meeting his tired but concerned and loving gaze with green eyes brimming with tears.
"Can you just...hold me for a little while?"
David nodded solemnly and eased himself into bed text to Suzumi, then wrapped his arms around her and pulled her close. She shuddered, and made a small, sad, broken sound as she pressed into his chest. He steadily stroked her back, trying to calm her down.
After a few minutes, Suzumi pulled back, David's arms still lingering on her shoulders, and gave him a small, shy smile.
"Thank you."
He responded quickly, "It's nothing, I'll always be here for you Suzumi. I love you. So, so much."
She let out a shaky exhale and said, "Well, thank you anyway. It's...it's nice to know that you love me. I love you too, David."
David pulled her closer once again and brought his lips to her tear stained cheek slowly, giving her time to pull away if she wished. She didn't.
He gently kissed away her tears, starting with her cheeks then moving to her jawline and upper neck before finishing with a soft kiss to her forehead. She twirled his soft black hair in her fingers before wrapping her arms around his slim body fiercely and pushing him down onto the bed.
He chuckled slightly and hugged her back.
They lay in bed, enjoying eachother's company and comforting presence for a long while, eventually falling asleep in eachother's arms.
