That Time I Had To Find My Way Back Home

Summary:

Every world has its own advantages and disadvantages. As we live in it, we are like the witness of what was, what is, and what will be happening.

But, we won't know the day when we will face something that is beyond. A far away land, part of no world. All because they are beyond our understanding.

This journey in Teyvat is only a 'small' part of my slime life. What will happen in my life after? The future is no one to see, but the past is everyone to cherish.

The Cardinal wants us to hear, and the Teyvat gives us a vision to seek.

I, Rimuru Tempest, am going to win, and I will destroy everything that stands in my way.

This work has no beta read. You are free to correct any grammar error that occured, for I am not a native.

Important note:
・In the main narration, Rimuru used He/Him and Ciel used She/Her, while people would call Rimuru whatever pronouns they think suit him. Rimuru didn't even bother to correct it, so you will find this inconsistency spread in the dialogues.
・The Traveller used They/Them. You can change it according to which Traveller you choose. This will apply the same to the Abyss Twin.

Chapter 1: Slime Among the Slimes

Chapter Text

The most disturbing thing is not the looks of Shion’s cooking. Not even the past events can outshine this one.

Trapped in a world that is not even part of your usual-world system. That sucks, right? Yes, here I was, a mere slime trapped in a stranger’s world.

It was complicated. While we have a whole universe with many worlds existing, this one was not part of ours. I didn't have any clue about the truth of this world, yet. All I knew was that I felt so disconnected. Even the energy that flowed around was different.

That's fine. Surprisingly I was compatible enough with the world’s magicules, so to survive until the truth is revealed was possible.

Recalling recent events, first, I was doing some urgent paperworks in my office back in our world with Shuna beside me. Well…. I didn't even remember what happened next, because suddenly there was a distortion of energy around us. I think maybe there was an error in the world’s system. It never behaved like that, no ancient beings like Guy could understand what was happening.

My senses blacked out. It was so uneventful that I think I just fell asleep instead of getting sucked into another universe.

Once I woke up, all I saw was trees. Yes, I woke up in a freaking forest. It feels like I was back to ground zero. I know it's a bit wrong because I was reincarnated inside a cave, but we did start our nation in a forest, correct?

『That's correct.』

Ciel? Is that you? Oh, my. Glad that I still have you here.

Since my skills, including Ciel, are still with me, maybe we should start to analyse that weird event back in our world first. Ciel, do you know something?

『Yes and no.』

Okay… that might not be good in any terms. Please spill everything that you know.

『This event never happened before, so the knowledge about getting transferred into another universe is zero. However I do know about energy distortion. It happens sometimes, but not in an established world. It has to be in a void of spacetime, a place where a new world will arise. There is no such condition to meet for a world to be born at the moment, so my analysis will say the same as you said. There was an error in the world’s system.』

Even the supposed-not-to-go-error universe can get sick like that. Alas, it's already happened. No time to mourn. Let's think of a way to get back.

Can we… go back?

『Unknown.』

Poor us, I guess.

『There's one possibility. I sense weak connections to somewhere. Perhaps it is the said world. I assume, as long as we still sense it, we can go back.』

Really? How weak is it? Why can't I sense any connection?

『Very, very weak so you didn't notice it until I bring the topic out.』

You really just want to mock me, eh? Nevermind. All we have to do is survive until we know how to use that weak connection to go back to our original world.

Without Ciel’s explanation, I perfectly know that a weak connection is too weak to be manipulated. Either we have to wait until it gets stronger, or just straight up influence it to be stronger. At least strong enough to form a rift for me to go through it.

I sat in the forest for who knows how long. When I finished arranging my thoughts, it's nighttime already. I have to take a note to always turn on my 〔Thought Acceleration〕 when I am in a deep thought or when I have a conversation with Ciel.

I stood up and cleaned my outfit from dust. But, I changed my mind before I started strolling around, to use my true form.

A blob of slime is less suspicious than a total beauty strolling in a forest, although I don't know if slimes exist in this world. At least I can hide easily with that form.

I slid through the forest floor leisurely. I didn't know where I was going, and I didn't know how big the forest was.

After a moment of uneventful things, I saw an opening. There, a view of a lake with a beautiful big tree in the centre was in sight. It was nighttime, so the surroundings were covered by the glittery light. I also saw fireflies roaming on the field.

It was so stunning, for a natural view like this.

I stayed and devoured the view as long as I could. But suddenly, something accidentally nudged me from behind. I immediately turned around.

I wasn't surprised, but it was unexpected to see a copy of me, literally in front of me. Yes, it was a slime. It might be curious about me. Each of us has their own distinctive features, after all. The slime in front of me has horns, or a kind of protruding parts of the body that look like horns. It's cute. I think, if I don't want to interact with the locals here, I should mimic this world's slime.

A slime mimicking a slime. Cool.

An analysis from Ciel said that these local slimes are part of elemental lifeforms. Their bodies are made from magicules. Maybe it's more accurate with elemental energy instead of magicules.

What is bothering me is how they are just simply… exist in a normal environment here. Back in our world, slimes are first born in a denser magicules environment, and they need magicules to keep existing. I've noticed that this world’s magicule, or elemental energy, is not that harsh-flowing. It flows like a breeze, gentle and calm.

I wonder how the living beings here use this energy in their daily routines.

The horned slime didn't do anything other than staring at me, so I left it alone and continued to roam around. Few distant later, the slime seemed in a hurry, and went the opposite way from me. Unexpectedly, it went to a nearby passerbys, probably a group of humans. With no hesitation, it attacked them.

So slimes are aggressive to other beings here? I am grateful enough not to choose to mimic their cute looks completely.

Also, it was the first time I saw a group of humans. I couldn't approach them without care. I was literally a slime at that moment, and adding that local slimes are aggressive. Perhaps using my human form is the best way?

Those humans continued their journey. The horned slime was nowhere in sight. It was defeated in no time.

I was circling around the lake, processing what my surroundings served to me. It was fun because everything around me is new.

I went in a random direction after I was satisfied enough, and was more surprised to see different colours of slimes in front of me.

Slimes that are fiery red? And I learnt that smaller slimes exist too, but they don't have unique appearances like the bigger one has.

『My analysis confirms that these are real slimes.』

But, why red?

『Remember that slimes are elemental lifeforms. They probably slimes with a fire element.』

I see. Fire slimes, then. That means I can see other types of slime here.

Hey, come to think of it…. I have a random question.

『You always ask random questions, though.』

Duh, please stop teasing me for now. You know we have to find out everything we should know about this world, or we can't survive.

Back to the topic. If I change to my human form, will the slimes here act aggressively towards me? It's no hurt to try.

I changed my form in front of the fire slimes, while they were staring foolishly at me. Now in front of them, stood a young look of a human, with long silvery blue locks and golden almond eyes.

It was an awkward silence. They didn't even move an inch, as they seemed to not care about how I looked. I think it is because I am a slime to the core.

Few seconds later, those fire slimes were defeated, leaving a view of a young lady in front of me alone. The lady emitted a bit of elemental energy, but it dissipated a moment after.
