And they were roommates.

Summary:

Rinbachi college roommate au, except they both have an online persona that they’re hiding from each other.

Rin is a huge horror enthusiast. He starts streaming as a hobby during high school hoping to make quick money to buy some more horror games, his channel started rapidly growing when a fan gifted him a v-tuber model that attracted in even more viewers. Rin realizes that his hobby has became profitable enough to financially support himself through college and he’s already way too deep in the gig to just suddenly stop streaming. Now he’s known internet-wide as Rikupon the unfazed horror game nerd of the vtubing industry. Rin thinks the job is embarrassing so he tries to keep his side job under wraps from people in his college, some people still find out anyway to Rin’s displeasure. Having to balance multiple tasks at the same time is difficult, and it becomes even harder when his new eccentric roommate moves in with him.

Notes:

Btw guys, first fanfic I have no idea what I’m doing 💀👌
I lowkey am just desperate for rnbc content because I’ve never been this hyper fixated on anything before. So I’m writing this because there’s not enough content 💔

IMPORTANT: I came up with the plot for the fanfic and made chat gpt regenerate it in ao3 style writing format for reference and rewrote the chapter again myself, putting this out here now.

07/07/26 UPDATE: from chapter 6 forward, I have gotten used to writing enough that I do not use a AI reference for ao3 formatting anymore. Thank you for your support up until now.

Chapter 1: How it started

Chapter Text

Rin itoshi hates many things; people, losing, vinegar—and recently a new addition had been added to his list— infact it wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Shidou fucking Ryusei had a special place in the list of things that Rin absolutely despises.

Despite that, he really misses and wants Shidou back as his roommate right now because his rent is at an all time high and there's absolutely no way Rin can afford all of it on his own. Shidou had been his roommate ever since he started college. They fight sometimes* which mostly ends with Rin breaking something but other than that they’ve gotten along fine. (A lie, but it’s as fine as anyone can get with Rin) All works out fine until one day, Shidou returns to their apartment with a huge shit eating grin plastered across his face and suddenly announces mid dinner, “By the way Rinrin, I’m movin’ in with cha brother”

Rin had frozen mid bite leaving the carbonara spaghetti left to hang on his fork. “You’re what?”

Shidou cackled, and ruffled Rin’s hair. “Awww you gonna miss me underlash? Why are you making that face? Weren’t you complaining about wanting to get rid of little ol’ me just a week ago?” And a day later Shidou’s stuff completely disappeared from the apartment.

Which also means that Rin is left to deal with the fact that his monthly rent had just doubled. Which is why he found himself here, at some café near the campus sitting across from his friends, as they graciously ignored Rin’s rant about his weekly sufferings.

“Just get a new roommate dude, problem solved” Karasu suggested, stirring his iced coffee as if Rin’s dilemma could be resolved that easily.

“Right, because I know that many people.” Rin grumbled sarcastically, he stabbed his fork into the food.

“Just forget it.” Yukimiya ever so elegant, adjusted his round glasses. “I suppose letting a stranger into your house isn’t very responsible. But that means you have to work extra hours wouldn’t it?”

“That isn’t going to work out with Rin-kun’s workload” Hiori points out. That was an understatement. Between classes, student council duties and his secret side job as a faceless horror game VTuber, Rin barely had any time to breathe. There was no way in hell he was adding another part time shift to his already packed schedule.

“So finding a new roommate is still your best option” Karasu smugly said. “We can help if you want man.”

“No thank you,” Rin said flatly. “I’ll figure it out.”

“Or, you can let us help,” Otoya grinned, leaning back in his chair. “Because lucky for you, I happen to know a guy”

Rin narrowed his eyes. “What kind of guy?”

The corner of Otoya’s mouth tilted up to Rin’s dismay. This can’t be anyone good, he already concluded. “Chill out bro, he’s just a little weird——but he’s not up to any trouble.”

“That barely tells me anything about ‘him’. Elaborate.”

Otoya lets out a displeased hum. “Bachira meguru, art major, kind of a night owl. He really, really needs a place ASAP. It all works out, yeah?”

Rin frowned, considering it. Bachira meguru, whom he never personally met before but he’s heard the name being thrown around a couple of times. Rin wasn’t thrilled with sharing his space with a stranger but he didn’t exactly have better options. “When can he move in?”

“This Saturday”

“…Pardon?”

Otoya gave him finger guns. “I already told him you were down.”

If not for the fact that they were in public and Rin had a reputation to maintain, he would’ve launched himself at Otoya by now. Rin groaned.

“I hate you.”

“Aww that’s mean Rinnie”

Otoya was moved out from the list of people Rin tolerated.

On the other end of the line, said Bachira Meguru was going through a similar dilemma,

Bachira had lived most of his life with Yuu. But recently she’s been traveling around more often for art exhibitions and other stuff that big artists like her do. This makes getting from his house to the campus quite a challenge since no one is there to drive him so he has to take the train, in the end Bachira ends up going late more often than not.

Bachira didn’t mind getting scolded by his professors for turning up late but Yuu seems genuinely sorry for him. So he finally decided that he should find a place closer to the campus so he doesn’t arrive late again.

This would’ve been easy if it weren’t for the fact that all the available accommodations were so overpriced, his family wasn’t poor per say but it’s still just him and his mother. He complained about the situation to one of his buddies Otoya one random afternoon and a few days later he received a text back—

Itoshi Rin,

Bachira sparsely remembers the name being mentioned by Isagi a couple of times during their hangouts. The overly competitive and serious guy that keeps glaring at isagi after isagi beat him in ONE section of the computer science pop quiz.

Bachira has never actually talked to Rin but he’s seen him around. Tall, intimidating and uptight. Not the type of person that Bachira would normally talk to but— he’s not against it!

So he’s not concerned with who his roommate is.

Rather, he is concerned about how he’s going to move 20 boxes worth of stuff into the apartment without alarming his roommate.

Bachira absolutely refuses to part with his cosplays and art supplies, but he also doesn’t want to expose his online persona as a cosplayer. Not that he’s embarrassed, he just doesn’t want it to interfere with his daily life.

So now he’s trying to shove multiple wigs into a box without damaging them somehow. It’s not very discreet in the first place for a college student to move in with 20 boxes but bachira’s sure he can bullshit through it one way or another.
