Every so often the FBI makes all of their teams do mandatory team building. Because of the nature of their work, and because Hotch does not want to sit in a room for four hours listening to a presentation on teamwork, the BAU often ends up on a case when this occurs. Which means they get to choose their own team building activity to do at a later time. Morgan manages to convince Hotch, who somehow manages to convince Strauss (with the help of Rossi but he doesn’t know that) to let them do laser tag.
Rossi pays for them to have the entire place to themselves. Everyone gets three lives, the last one alive wins. It goes like this.
Penelope Garcia is, to no one’s surprise, the first one out. She has no training and she’s wearing so many colours and clacky jewellery that hiding isn’t really an option. She does manage to get a lucky shot on Hotch though before she goes down.
The next out is Rossi. To be fair he went in with the intent to shoot Hotch and wasn’t really paying attention to anyone else. Which gave JJ and Emily the opening to shoot him. And if he wasn’t distracted by Emily’s teasing as she ran past he probably would’ve noticed Hotch, but as it was he didn’t. A second after his last life loaded Hotch shot him in the back.
JJ is the next one out. She’d been doing pretty good. She managed to get Penelope, Derek and Rossi. But she had also been shot by Hotch and Spencer. In the end it’s Derek that gets the last shot on her. She had been following Emily, who she knows is down to her last life, and apparently missed where Derek was waiting.
As soon as Derek shot JJ he got shot by Emily, taking him out of the game as well. He did not know Emily was there. Shooting JJ hadn’t been planned, he’d heard her coming and decided to seize the opportunity. Ironically he’d been looking for Emily before that but he couldn’t find her.
Considering the three people left in the game are a former spy, a former SWAT sniper, and known clutz Spencer Reid, no one predicted that the next one out would be Emily. But Spencer had already managed to get her twice. She has no idea where Hotch even is when he shoots her but she could see Spencer so she knows it was Hotch who did it.
The only person currently out that Spencer didn’t shoot is Rossi, and that’s only because Hotch killed him before Spencer could. Knowing the most likely ways the rest of the team would play and who they would likely target meant he was able to plan his own strategy accordingly. The biggest threat was Hotch. Which is why most of Spencer’s strategy so far had involved avoiding him.
A strategy he can no longer employ as they are the last two left in the game. He was the one who got Penelope out. Rossi passed him on his way out mumbling about ‘that SWAT trained bastard’. JJ and Morgan left at the same time and the only reason they would do that without shooting each other is if they were both dead already. And Emily yelled ‘FUCK’ at full volume when she got killed. Which by process of elimination since it wasn’t him that shot her, left Hotch.
He’s got the advantage though. Hotch is on his last life, Emily shot him earlier. Spencer, on the other hand, has two lives left.
He’s thinking up the best way to utilize that when his vest buzzes and the lights on it shut down. He got shot. Looking up he sees Hotch smirking at him.
“You’re not gonna run?”
He doesn't need to run. Even if he did, he definitely can’t outrun Hotch.
The lights on his vest are starting to cycle, counting down how long he has before it starts back up on his last life. He knows what he’s going to do.
Spencer can see the confusion cross Hotch’s features when instead of moving away like he anticipated Spencer starts bounding towards him. Hotch only has a second to puzzle over it before his back is slammed into the wall and Spencer’s lips collide with his. Hotch’s mouth opens on a gasp and Spencer uses that opportunity to stick his tongue down the man’s throat.
Just as Hotch gets his hands onto Spencer’s hips his vest buzzes. Spencer pulls back a bit, his gun is right over one of the sensor pads. Spencer’s vest lights up green to proclaim him the winner.
“I think they call that cheating Dr Reid”
“I call that playing to my advantage Agent Hotchner”
They’re still pressed together.
Hotch is going to respond, mouth open and everything, when Rossi’s voice yells through the door to “come on lovebirds, the rest of us want to go get drinks”. Spencer blushes.
“I forgot there are cameras in here”
“Glad to know you were so determined to kiss me that you forgot something. Really boosts my ego.”
Spencer glares at him.
Hotch kisses him lightly on the cheek “Come on lovebird the team’s waiting”
