Work Text:

— See you guys tomorrow! — Scott waves at his bandmates. He then proceeds to speed up his steps so that he could arrive at his apartment as soon as possible. It’s snowing, and Scott is already feeling the cold catching up to him.

Well, calling the apartment his is definitely a bit of a stretch. Maybe even a big stretch. Scott is fully aware that he barely pays for anything in the place he calls ‘home’, for now, at least. One day, he’ll stop mooching off Wallace and find a place of his own, or that’s what he likes to believe in, anyway.

He hears his friends saying their “goodbyes” collectively, it has been like this ever since the band started, but it still manages to leave Scott with a fuzzy and cheesy feeling of wanting to see them again. It’s like he’s a teenager all over again. Scott can’t tell if he finds that gross, disappointing, or amusing.

As Scott inched farther and farther from his bandmates, he began to really breathe in the weird mixture of melancholy and comfort the blues of the snow and cold weather brought him. The breeze quickly taking hold of his face, starting with his nose, then to his cheeks, leaving them with a pink tint that was all too familiar to Scott. He has been living in Toronto all his life, after all.

The only signal of warmth around Scott were the shops, cafeterias and restaurants that were still open after 9PM. Sometimes, his eyes would be met with the dissonance of a yellowish-orange colored, lit up shop right by a darker shaded mixture of blues and grays shop, which had already closed for the day.

These moments are small, daily, familiar, however, they are still special to Scott. They remind him of the reflection of his home-city, and the warmth provided by those around him. Whenever he starts thinking about this, Scott always wonders if he should become a poet or not, but then gets reminded of his current financial situation and immediately shoves that idea aside.

Breaking out of his messy nostalgic thoughts, Scott notices that he’s still pretty far from their apartment, realizing that he should probably start running if he doesn’t want to catch a cold. So, he does. In a pretty clumsy way, sure, but he’s trying his best.

About fifteen-ish minutes later, Scott finally arrives home, stepping in as soon as he opens the door, finally taking in the warmth of the indoors lighting that so brightly contrasted the melancholy from the outdoor shades. After slamming the door shut, Scott notices the smell of coffee and hears a familiar voice greeting him.

— Welcome back, guy. How was today? I realized the weather was getting pretty bad, so I decided to make us some coffee, you better thank me. — Wallace informs. Although Scott knew he hates to admit it, Wallace, deep, deep down, truly cares for him. Scott couldn’t have gotten a better roommate even if asked, he thinks.

— Thanks, Wallace. It was pretty fun, but the weather caught up to me so fast, I couldn’t see if the shops had any new Sonic merch! — Scott cries. As much as he appreciates the aesthetic of the snowy weather, he is pretty bummed about that. Especially considering how many new Sonic ‘things’ have been popping up recently. Wallace smirks at Scott’s cry, and responds.

— Well, at least it was fun. Here, take your coffee. — Wallace hands Scott his mug, which, coincidentally, is Sonic themed. Scott takes a sip and cracks an incredibly wide smile just for a simple drink. Well, he wouldn’t say it was necessarily just because of the drink, it was likely also due to Wallace’s, admittedly, kind of cute consideration for Scott.

Well, yeah, they have been living together for years at this point, however, Scott always felt a flutter in his chest every time Wallace did these small gestures of appreciation toward him. Like, when Wallace bought him some winter clothes, or when Wallace would walk closer to Scott so he wouldn’t get cold during their trips to their local grocery shop. These simple moments make him feel loved.

Scott would never admit that to Wallace though, that’s too gay and they’re both not looking for a relationship right now. Only after finishing this train of thought that Scott notices that he has been staring at Wallace for a good while at this point. He immediately shoots his eyes to the coffee mug below him and starts gulping it down out of sheer embarrassment.

Wallace chuckles at situation, putting on his characteristic smirk soon after — I know I’m irresistible, guy. No need to feel embarrassed. — he provokes, taking a sip of his own coffee. Scott only felt himself getting more flushed, worsened by the pink tint that hadn’t completely melted away from earlier. He’s getting more pathetic by the second, he can sense it.

He needs something to talk about, to distract his mind from all of these unexplored feelings — So… how was work today? — was the best Scott could come up with. Better than something Sonic-related, he affirms to himself.

— Same as always, boring, but not too bad. Someone’s gotta keep paying for our stuff, right? — Wallace responds teasingly. Scott mentally breathes out, seeing that his initiative worked to create an actual conversation.

— Yeah… Sex Bob-Omb has a show this month though, you’re coming, right? — Scott spouts excitedly. He always loves seeing Wallace in the crowd, even if he prefers to listen to anything else other than Scott’s music.

— Guess I am. I wouldn’t lose an opportunity to see how hot you look on stage. — Wallace affirms with a tone of sarcasm. He always says things like this, and Scott knows he means it, but he can’t tell if it’s romantic or just platonic flirting. Whichever it is, though, Scott does feel a little flushed at the compliment. He wonders how Wallace would react if he complimented him instead.

— I think you look nice in your winter clothes. — Scott blurts out without thinking much. He just now realizes how gay that sounds. Well, I guess it’s to late to go back on it now. Wallace surely doesn’t mind, right? Plus, Scott is still curious about the answer, and he really does mean it. They have gone on so many walks together during the winter, Scott couldn’t help but think about how beautiful Wallace looks in his winter clothes alongside the cold blues of the weather, complimented by the bits of snow around him.

Although, before the verbal answer came, Scott notices that Wallace was staring at him, with an incredibly surprise look on his face, might Scott add. Shit. That probably actually was pretty gay of him to say, or at least a little nerve wracking coming from Wallace’s “straight” roommate that almost never voiced any visual compliments about him ever.

Scott starts to regret his decision the more the silence gets to him, he probably shouldn’t have said that at all, he should just apologize to Wallace and beg for him to just ignore what he said, he should—

— That’s pretty… nice to hear coming from you, guy. — Wallace admits, pausing before elaborating. — I’m sorry for the silence, I just wasn’t ready for it. I’m not mad at you or anything, just, kinda shocked, I guess. — he tries to comfort and affirm Scott that he hadn’t said anything wrong. That makes Scott notice just how red Wallace’s ears are. He’s blushing?! At a compliment Scott made?! Suddenly, Scott feels a warmth crawling up to his cheeks again.

— I didn’t mean it for it to come off weird, I just think that you… never mind, you probably got it already. — Scott stumbles through his words. This is such an awkward, yet sweet moment for them. And all because curiosity and impulsivity got the best of him.

— Got what? That you find me handsome? — Wallace’s words may seem sarcastic, however, they sound genuine. He’s actually confused about this. And here was Scott thinking that Wallace was the best person at reading others’ gay feelings.

— Yeah? Is there a problem with that or? — Scott is genuinely confused. He avoids eye contact for the second time during this conversation, fixating his look on the mug again. He knows Wallace has caught on, but he still isn’t sure if he wants to push this further. Scott knows Wallace isn’t the type to settle, at least, not so soon.

— Scott, if you want to kiss me, you can just tell me directly. — Wallace says. No playful tone, no sarcasm, he really meant it. Even regained his composure from the compliment. Scott could feel himself burn inside, though, he wanted to at least try it. Just once couldn’t hurt, right?

— Then… — Scott’s voice is shaky. — …do you wanna kiss? — he manages, stuttering pathetically through his words. This is a part of him Scott thought would never actually come to light, he actually believed that he could have warm, fuzzy, sweet feelings about Wallace and still continue to be his “straight roommate”. Turns out, he was terribly wrong.

— Of course I do, guy. More than anything. C’mere. — Wallace runs his fingers through Scott’s hair, gently gripping his head in the process. Scott feels as though his heart is about to pop out of his chest, not even being able to move an inch until Wallace closes the distance between them.

Wallace’s movements are unexpectedly gentle and sweet, his mouth and tongue tasting like coffee due to their meal from earlier. Scott manages to kiss back, finally placing his hands on Wallace’s cheeks, in a simple, but soft, touch. Scott wishes they could stay like this forever.

After a couple seconds, they pull away. Scott’s head is spinning. He can’t even start to process what’s happening, he just knows he wants it to continue, but first, came Wallace’s boundaries, of course.

— Hey so, you told me you weren’t looking for a relationship, right? But I kinda just… declared my love for you? So, I just wanna know… what are you okay with us being? — Scott asks, genuinely caring for the others’ personal preferences. He wasn’t one to break boundaries on purpose, after all. Especially not of his new lover.

— Well… I’m okay with us being boyfriends, as long as it’s an open relationship. As you know, I really don’t feel like settling right now, and even though I have loved you for a very long time, and still do, I would like to keep this up, if that’s okay with you. — Wallace opens himself up. Hearing that he loves Scott was everything he needed, he really doesn’t mind Wallace being with other guys from time to time if he was still his boyfriend. All he needs from this is Wallace’s affection and partnership.

— I’m cool with it. — Scott blurts out a couple incoherent noises of just trying to process the situation. Him and Wallace. Boyfriends. Wallace loves him, but like, romantically. They’re more than just roommates now. — So, would you like to resume?

Wallace giggles at Scott’s situation, responding amidst his amusement — Of course.
