Chapter Text

Everyone hates me. They hate that I have to do my job. If I had it the way I wanted at the start I wouldn’t even be here. Life would be thriving. But life without death is meaningless.
Alas nobody seems to care about how I think. If they had just stopped and thought about it, they’d see what I see. They’d see the truth.

It keeps me awake, I haven’t slept in decades not that I’d need sleep it’s apart of my job. Death doesn’t wait for anyone, it is cruel, it is cold and there’s nothing you can do about it.
If you haven’t guessed already I’m death. I used to be mortal like you. I had things most people from my time didn’t. I had a loving family. I had caring friends. Let me explain how I got this terrible job.

I was just a little girl about 10 years old. I had long silky brown hair, deep chocolate coloured eyes and slightly tanned skin. I lived in a small town in Quebec. The town was so small we all knew each other. The other night I had met a new boy. He never told me his name but I didn’t think anything of it. We became fast friends I was surprised by the fact that he said nobody else wanted to be friends with him. The people in the town weren’t usually like that.

“Not many people notice me” the boy had said.
“I find that hard to believe, you seem to be a great person to hang around with!” I replied full of excitement to be gaining a new friend. The boy smiled.
“I’m glad I finally have someone to hang out with thanks… you know what I didn’t catch your name.” He said.
“Oh I’m so sorry how rude of me I’m Beatrice but most of my friends call me Bea for short.” I had told him.
“Beatrice! There you are, mon soleil, I’ve been looking all over for you!” My mother said, drawing my attention. She had dark green eyes with about the same skin colour as me. She had long curly blonde hair that was so light and airy whenever a slight breeze of wind came by it would bounce, making her look very majestic.
She reached me and gave me a hug.
“What are you doing here, mon soleil?” She asked kissing my cheek.
“I’m talking to my friend!” I said as I excitedly gestured to where the boy had been standing. The boy had disappeared.
“Do you have an imaginary friend? What’s his name?” Mother asked.
“What where did he go?” I asked confused as to why he had just disappeared.
“It’s ok, mon Cher, we have to go home anyways, somebody’s there waiting for you!” She said cheerfully.
“But mama I’m sure he was just here!” I exclaimed, looking around rapidly.
“I didn’t see him.” She told me with a concerned tone, but she quickly hid it.
“Now come on we have to get back.” She said with a calming smile. I nodded. But as I was walking away I felt a tingling sensation on the back of my neck. I turned around but saw nothing. I looked back to my mom. Her face looked cold and her eyes were wide but it went back to normal after barely a second.
Don’t go with her, said a voice in my head it almost sounded like the boy that had just disappeared, if you go with her your life will change. Something bad is about to happen.
If only I had listened to that voice but alas I just shook my head out of a daze and took my mother’s hand.
