Echoes of Time

Summary:

He first met her at her last exhibition. She is considered by experts to be the most important painter of her century. And yet he is not attracted by her recognized work. But the underrated ‘Love: A Three-Piece Study’ is a series of three paintings featuring moments in the life of a couple with the titles ‘Fate,’ ‘Wish,’ and ‘Immortal.’ He is himself an amateur painter and invites her over to see his work. In his studio, a portrait of a woman with expressive green eyes attracts her attention. A man, a woman, and an art talk. As she engages Nik in conversation about his art and her art, their connection deepens. Through their dialogue, they explore themes of creativity, loss, and the profound ties that bind souls together. Ultimately, a revelation surfaces... One shot.

Notes:

Klaus, Cami, and art...

I just love them and have been missing them lately.

They truly deserve more.

I hope you enjoy this piece!

This is for all the Klamille shippers out there who are still hoping for a new story.

Work Text:

Within the vibrant space of Nik's studio, a woman in her late twenties meanders through, her gaze taking in the striking artworks that adorn the walls. Each piece, whether gracefully displayed on easels or casually resting against the walls and scattered across the floor, narrates a tale—revealing glimpses of the artist's life.

A partially draped portrait of a striking blonde woman draws her to a stop in the far corner of the room. The fabric flutters slightly, revealing a glimpse of the woman’s captivating green eyes, as if they were alive, beckoning her closer. With an instinctual flick of her wrist, she pulls away the sheet, her gaze lingering on the delicate strokes and intricate details of the painting.

It's beautiful. He effectively captured the texture of her hair and the subtle play of light on her skin, enhancing the realism of the piece. The woman's expression is contemplative, drawing the viewer's attention to her expressive eyes and soft features.

She gets the feeling that this is far more personal than all of his other work. Missing the angry, textured brushwork she notices in other paintings.

"What's her story?" she inquires, her curiosity piqued.

"A friend from long ago," he replies, his voice laced with an undertone of nostalgia.

"Just a friend?" She tilts her head slightly, studying the painting and its emotional weight. "The work feels far too personal to be merely that."

Klaus's eyes drift to the floor for a moment, and she senses that he's lost in memories of the past. "She was very important to me," he admits, his voice barely above a whisper, hinting at his vulnerability. He meets her gaze again, and for an instant, a flicker of pain flashes across his face.

Not quite satisfied with his answer, she opts not to pry. She shifts her focus to the myriad of paintings around her. "Your art is truly beautiful," she observes. "But I must admit, your style is hard to pin down. It shifts and evolves—different techniques, varied materials, and themes that span centuries. It’s as if you're painting through time itself."

"Well, love," Klaus retorts with a playful smirk, "not everyone has your brilliance," he jests, a cheeky grin on his face. "The best painter of her generation, capable of standing shoulder to shoulder with the masters," he adds, repeating the title she was given; his tone sounds teasing, yet the praise in his voice is genuine.

"For many of us amateur artists, art is merely a pastime," he continues. "For me? It’s about control, expression, and escape."

“Same here,” she responds, her smile genuine and warm. "Perhaps professionals and amateurs aren't so different after all."

He hands her a glass of rich red wine; she observes how the deep colour mirrors the colour of his lips.

She moves toward the sizable window, framed with expensive wood, looking out at the city—lights from cars and buildings, a harbour filled with boats. Her gaze travels back to the art surrounding her, and she takes a breath, attempting to gather her thoughts. A Chesterfield leather sofa placed against one wall attracts her attention.

"I don’t typically do this," she admits, her fingers lightly tracing the edge of the sofa. "I don’t follow strangers to their studios just to admire their work."

Pausing, she raises an eyebrow, a playful smile creeping onto her lips. "And to spare you the question, it is not working the other way around either."

"That makes me special then," he quips with a glint of mischief in his eyes.

"Just for the record," he adds with an intense glow burning in his eyes, "this studio is off-limits to all the other ladies who have accompanied me to my home."

"So that makes me special too?" she counters, her laughter lightening the air around them.

"Why did you invite me here? What compelled you to show me your art?" she presses, her curiosity unyielding.

"Other than the fact that you’re one of the most talented artists of the last century?" he replies, his tone playful yet earnest.

"Yes," she says seriously, "other than that."

"It was your exhibition," he explains. "Some of your paintings…"

"The couple? I noticed you spending more time observing them than you did on the rest of my exhibition." She interjects, her interest piqued. "Why those in particular?"

"There was something about them that felt familiar," he admits, his brow furrowing slightly, "like a fragment of a dream. I wanted to know the mind behind them."

"That’s sweet," she says, her smile widening. "Honestly? I don’t know why I painted them. They feel personal, like a déjà vu I can’t place."

"I liked the title: ‘Love: A Three-Piece Study.’" He comments, "Tell me more about the couple. Who are they?"

"I’ve told you—no story. Just an idea... a glimpse."

"I don’t buy it, and neither do you," he challenges gently. "Why those scenes? Why those titles? ‘Fate,’ ‘Wish,’ ‘Immortal"—they must mean something to you."

"Nothing… It just felt right," she admits, her laughter ringing out, light and airy. "Perhaps every girl, at some point, believes in fairytales and everlasting love. Maybe it’s just the romantic in me. After all, every artist is a romantic fool at heart…"

"Are they in love?" he presses, his eyes locked onto hers.

"I'm not sure… Maybe. Yes! They definitely are," she concedes, her voice gaining strength. "They share something profound—that's 'Fate'—what brought them together, yet circumstances keep them apart. They treasure simple moments, like sharing coffee and deep conversations—that's the ‘Wish.’ As for ‘Immortal,’ I think she’s gone, taking a piece of him with her. But in his heart, she stays alive. Does that make sense?"

He studies her as she explains, a thoughtful expression drawn on his face.

"Why all those questions? Please tell me you’re not a journalist trying to break down my art," she jokes, raising an eyebrow with a playful smile. "Critics claim ‘The Couple’ isn’t my best—too sappy, too cliché. Maybe they’re right. But I don’t care. It is my most personal work. I carried them with me for so long; I had to set them free to free myself. But I stand by their story, no matter how complicated love can be. It doesn’t always end happily, but it’s a journey worth taking."

"I stand by their story too," he says, a shadow of something deeper flickering in his eyes—pain? Longing? But just as quickly, it vanishes behind an arrogant smirk, his demeanor shifting to one of confident bravado. The contrast is striking—his cockiness is tinged with an undeniable aura of raw power.

Noticing the contemplative expression on her face, he continues, "As for those critics and their opinions, good or bad, what do they know about art? The talentless often find solace tearing down those who create."

"Are you speaking of experience?" she asks, genuine curiosity threading through her tone.

"In a way," he admits, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Long ago, I pondered why I should let the fruits of my labour languish in my studio, unappreciated. So, I held my first exhibition. Let’s just say the critics weren’t kind."

"How did you cope with rejection?" she inquires, her interest piqued.

"Easily, love. I cornered the guy, talked about his opinions of my work, and then removed his limbs with my bare hands," he replies with a sly grin.

"Great balls of fire! You are joking, right? I’ve never gone that far," she laughs, raising an eyebrow in disbelief.

"But you thought about it, didn’t you?" he prompts, a knowing glint in his eye.

She chuckles, choosing not to give him that satisfaction. "What pushed you to show your work? Was it about the applause or something else?"

"In a sense," he admits, mischief dancing in his gaze. "I was aiming to impress a woman. Win her over and snag some praise—a double victory!"

"And how did that go?" she asks softly. "Did you win her over?"

"Turns out, I didn’t need to win her over. All I had to do was ask for her heart," he shares, a bittersweet smile crossing his lips.

"She was the woman of the portrait!" she exclaims, certainty resonating in her voice.

"She was," he confirms, the weight of memory heavy in the air.

"You were in love with her," she states, her heart aching for him.

"I love her, yes."

The present tense does not escape her notice. "What happened?" she urges.

"Let's just say she paid the price for being close to me," he answers, regret etched on his face.

Her brow furrows in confusion, prompting him to elaborate.

"Think of your ‘couple’—‘Fate,’ ‘Wish,’ ‘Immortal.’ Meeting her felt like destiny; wishing for a life together was a constant ache. My time with her was brief, yet more vivid than lifetimes spent with others. She died, and since then, I've carried her with me. Sometimes I crave to see her again to talk to her… And I paint her, hence the portrait," he explains.

He pauses and then smirks as he turns the spotlight on her. "Ever fallen in love?"

"I’ve had relationships—I thought I was in love with some," she reflects. "But something always felt lacking. The closest I came to that feeling was with them—the couple in my paintings. I dreamt of them and felt their love. They were always there in my mind, the unknown love I somehow knew, the bond I never had but, somehow, lost."

Klaus nods slowly, as if weighing her words. "Perhaps it’s in those intangible connections that we find our true selves."

She looks deeply into his eyes, a newfound understanding dawning upon her.

"Isn't it strange?" She muses, her gaze drifting to the paintings in the room. "Two souls separated by time yet drawn together by art."

Klaus watches her, a smile tugging at his lips. "It is how it began the first time around—us staring at a painting."

With that, they share a quiet moment, the weight of his admission hanging in the air.

He can see the panic nesting in her eyes, the gears in her mind working tirelessly—the "how?" The "when?" So many questions are swirling beneath the surface.

But she utters a resolute affirmation, "I know you, don’t I?" He feels pride swell within him. Always the brave one, facing uncertainty head-on.

"I 'am her—the woman in the portrait," she whispers, her voice barely above a breath.

"Camille," he replies, "that was her name, your name," and his voice trembles as he pronounces that name—her name!

How? She wants to ask; the answer is right there, but she knows it's pointless; he speaks the truth. Everything inside her screams to call him by his name. Not Nik, Klaus!

"Klaus?" The word slips out before she can stop it; the sound is foreign yet familiar, rolling off her tongue.

He nods, his heart swelling with love and admiration for the woman standing before him. She looks just a bit different, but her eyes are the same. This was the moment he had been waiting for.

"I waited for you. All these centuries, I waited for you. I never forgot; I never stopped believing..."

His hand reaches to touch her face, and she leans into his touch, melting as she used to when she was his blonde angel.

She closes her eyes, letting her senses take over; his touch feels familiar and comforting, like coming home after a long journey. She steps closer, her palms hugging the back of his neck, pulling him closer.

The smell, the texture of his skin, the blue of his eyes—everything is a vivid tapestry of memories. It wasn't a dream; it was a kaleidoscope of their shared past.

"I love you," he whispers, feeling the weight of those words lift off his chest.

It’s as if a missing piece of her heart has finally been found, and suddenly everything falls into place.

"I thought you were going to tell me that tomorrow…?" She chuckles softly, feeling the warmth of his breath against her cheek.

"This is our tomorrow, Camille," he replies softly, his heart swelling with love and hope for their future together.

"Then let’s explore it," Cami suggests, a spark of hope lighting her eyes, "one brushstroke at a time."

Notes:

"Changing the Narrative" will be getting a new chapter very soon! I've written about 8900 words, and yes, Klaus and Cami will have another meeting. They have some important things to discuss regarding their breakup, and Klaus is aware that Cami's life could be at risk in the conflict with Lucien. He definitely has some things to express!

Thanks for your patience as I go through it a few more times for editing and revisions.

Additionally, I’ll be releasing a new chapter for "You Hand in Mine" shortly. It's also written and just needs some final touches!
