Martha's Wrath

Summary:

Martha calls the Doctor out on him treating her like shit

Work Text:

Weeeeoooo. Weeeeeeoooooo. Weeeeeooooooo. The Tardis shrieks as the Doctor pushes the dials, grinning as he does so.

"Where are we going?" Martha asks him excitedly, grabbing a pole to steady herself as the Tardis crashes through the time vortex.

"Texas, 1851," the Doctor says.

"What?" Martha asks, thinking she must have misunderstood.

When the Tardis finally stops, the Doctor grabs her hand to drag her outside with him. She stands still, so he turns around.

"Well, come on!" he says. "The Tardis sensed something here. She says it's really cool. Maybe an alien. Or something even more crazy, like vampires. That would be wild."

"I'm not going out there," Martha says, unmoving. "If you have to, you can go without me."

The Doctor gives her one of his long, drawn-out dramatic groans. "Oh, but that's no fun!"

"Fun?" Martha practically shouts, not able to contain her rage any longer. "Fun? Do you even know what was going on in America in the 1800s? It won't be much fun for me when I get captured and sold!"

The Doctor rolls his eyes at her. Actually rolls his eyes. "Don't be ridiculous. You know I won't let that happen."

She turns away. "If it's all the same to you, I'd rather not risk it. I'll see you when you get back." She stalks away from the control room, intent on hiding under her covers the next few hours. Why would he even think she'd want to go outside in an era such as this? He could take her anywhere in the universe, and he has to take her here. He's not as smart as he makes out to be. In fact, he's actually quite stupid.he Doctor rolls his eyes at her. Actually rolls his eyes. "Don't be ridiculous. You know I won't let that happen."

The Doctor follow her down the stairs. "Martha, come on. Don't you trust me?"

She whirls around in disbelief. "Why would I trust you? After last time? With the Family of Blood?"

He takes a step away from her. "What do you mean?"

Does he genuinely not know? "Forget it," Martha says. "Just go. Leave me alone." She runs to her room before he can stop her. She punches her pillow a few times, then throws herself on her bed, turning on the TV to distract herself. What was wrong with her? Why did she care so much about this man who couldn't care less about her?

A few hours later, the Doctor is back and knocking at her door. Will he apologize? "Martha," he says, "Are you sure you don't want to come out? There's this really cool-"

"Shut up!" she yells at him before he can finish. She then marches to the door and swings it open, causing him to stumble backwards in surprise. "Take me home," she says.

"Home?" the Doctor says. "But there's so much we haven't done yet! So many places you haven't seen!"

"Well, maybe you should have taken me to one of those instead of constantly taking me places where I'm treated like an animal!" she spits at him.

She hates the fake concern on his face. "Martha, you know I had no choice with he Family of Blood," he says. "I'm truly sorry about what happened to you. I promise I'll do a better job of protecting you."

"You're not sorry," she says. Tears are forming in her eyes now, and she hates that he can see them. "If you were sorry, why would you offer Joan to come with us?"

This makes him pause. "How do you know about that?" he asks, suddenly uncertain.

"I heard you," she says.

"Oh. Well," he awkwardly straightens his coat. "She said no, didn't she? No use talking about it. In any case, I don't see what is has to do with our current predicament."

Martha gapes at him. "That woman treated me horribly," she says. "And you offered her to join us? No, not us. You. You offered to let her replace me. I've only ever been a stand in for you, until someone better comes along. Someone whiter."

He looks practically crestfallen. Well, too late.

She slams the door in his face. "Let me know once we're home," she says through the door.
