Work Text:
As a god, fighting boredom was half the battle of fighting corruption. An intimate battle that Watatsumi-Azumi-no-Isora was unfamiliar with as the god of matchmaking. If anything she was drowning in the sheer desire humans had for becoming a pair. But sometimes, just sometimes she would find herself free in the presence of humans. Humans that did not desire her matchmaking services or have prayers of that nature.
Those were the times she was called upon for her godlihood. A cleansing, a drop of power, a dance, or whatever the occasion called for. Those times were far and few between but they were times to remember. In most recent years a boy, white haired and somewhat fragile looking, had her remembering those times. He could see her. A rare trait among humans. Even more surprising, he was considerate of her.
It hadn't been her intention to become curious about him, or any human really. Their lives were fleeting after all. And while they helped pass the time, becoming too attached always led to the downfall of a god. Either by ending up a servant to them or becoming corrupted when the humans no longer had need for them. When the humans no longer danced for or with them. With this boy it didn't feel as dangerous.
He was young still, with more years ahead of him and she was sure, more entanglements as well. A force of curiosity overtook her watching him interact with the little girl with him. A force so strong Isora decided to give in, taking a peek at his love chart. Truly the only real power she held that interested most humans. Very few called upon her to wash away things for them anymore. But that was alright, it wasn't her favorite power to use either.
As the chart appeared her eyes widened looking from the boy, now identified as Jin Kuwabara, and back to the chart. Despite his young age it was rather interesting in many ways. Most of all the dark red line that connected him to another. A face and name unknown, telling her the connection had not yet been made. Still, it had been so long since she had seen anything but arrows connecting people. The feelings of each person written along the direction of the flow of feelings.
She'd witnessed many different emotions through her long tenure as a god, well her whole life truly. Watching humans come together had always been one of her pleasures. She'd seen disgust, love, longing, hate, lust, and many more forms of each. Not always reciprocated but often surprising to the humans that sought her out. Willing to pay the price for her insight. It wasn't free after all.
This though, the red line of fate she had only seen a handful of times in her long, long life. A rare soul indeed was the one who paired with another. She'd only once seen a connected pair come together and that was so far back she could no longer recall their faces. Still, this one was young, this Jin was but a child and he had more interesting partners in his chart as well.
There was of course the little girl he'd come with, Aoba, harboring deep feelings of affection, almost love for him. As well as the to be shrine maidens, of two minds and one body the Misasagi twins, Natsu and Fuyu. He viewed all three with friendship and affection, on varying levels. Then there were a few lower gods, but also well known gods including the Mano-Okuchi-no-Makami, small affection flowing from them while to them flowed a modicum of respect. It was interesting to see.
Of course Isora knew a fugeki when she saw one. This Jin was sure to be a talent in the future. A talent she would keep an eye on, she decided as she closed the chart. It was one she knew she would check on infrequently. Though maybe more than Hirano, who actually brought her offerings, even if they were always the same fish. His chart though was nowhere near as interesting with his love line always solidly pointed at the same man, Koji. A perfect fit for him naturally.

It had been years since Isora had checked a human chart out of curiosity. The last time had been a very stubborn girl who refused to leave for a few days. Her prayers louder and louder as she kneeled before the altar. Of course the venerable Watatsumi-Azumi-no-Isora-sama was not going to grace her with an answer. The girl had brought nothing to offer, and her chart was too boring to show herself to ask for one.
This time though, something big had happened in the village and she could feel the energy shift around her. Of course there was also a Night that had accompanied what she later learned was a ship crash. The details weren't as important as the information her chart revealed to her though. She was no fighter and the Night hadn't stayed to wreak havoc. Calling up the chart of Jin Kuwabara, his fate line still dark red and connected to what had been an unknown face. Now though the face was clear and a name read underneath.
Gao Greschumann ||, a handsome boy with black hair, piercings in his ears, and eyes that seemed to hold emotion well. A curious fit, well to her as this boy was also a fugeki. The lower gods and a few higher ones told her so. Though they weren't all very familiar to her, foreign as they were. But they were not the only other interesting thing in his chart aside from the line of fate. There were several royal sounding names, connected as family. A rare sight in rural Japan.
And of course to go along with his presumably royal heritage were several women with lust, love, and one with a very obsessive love. Then there were thousands of soldiers with feelings of respect and admiration. It was rather a large chart, the likes of which she hadn't seen since being near the military. This chart truly only made her curiosity grow.
There was fate here, and she wanted to witness it first hand.

Isora never thought she'd get the chance to actually see Jin and his fated Gao together. She wasn't a god called upon for fighting after all. And she had little reason to leave her little island. Plus she also had no interest in being dragged in against the Night. A stance that did not change when almost the whole village came to her island after the summoning of the sun god, well his wife Konohananosakuya-Hime-sama. It was within her power to wash away the power the powerful god left.
She had not expected to be offered her own wish granted in return. But Jin, now a full fledged fugeki on his own, had surprised her with consideration once again. Though of course there were very few among the group who knew he could always see her, not just when she had the power to interact with the world. Still, it didn't make the offer less considerate as it gave her the opportunity to interact with more humans. To have more of the human world to take in.
The okonomiyaki was delicious as she had known it would be. It also came with meeting Gao, a general which explained a lot of questions Isora had about his chart. Alongside him were many of the names in his chart, including the obsessively in love woman. While she had previously met most of the people on Jin's chart, she could now quite easily see the difference in behavior towards his fated and the others. It was a nice thing to see.
Memories of the previous pair came to mind as she watched them. Fleeting memories that fell into place as recalled faces sat before her once more. Different names, different personalities, but the same souls she had seen connected once before. It made her heart swell. A feeling intensified when Hirano solicited her services and allowed her the pleasure of watching a couple form before her eyes.
The night ended with a dance. A dance performed by Jin and Gao that she knew would not leave her mind for centuries to come. A beautiful sight of love, fate, and perfect partners filling her sight as she watched on.
