Work Text:
As a young writer going through trauma I keep having nightmares about this recurring idea. So I chose to make a story out of it and fill it with a plot that is meaningful to both sides of the nightmare. This story is fictional. Please read diligently and with caution.
His name is Mo, Mo Bunty he was born on December 22nd, 1995 to a white mother named Sherie Bunty and an unnamed black father. He is a mixed kid from Atlanta with an army green top and navy blue shorts. He was born with a mental disability and so his mother hates him for it. Sherie is a woman with great value in the perfume business and was expecting to give birth to a perfect son. When the nurses told Sherie about her son’s disability she immediately loved him less and nonchalantly took care of him. Fast forward to today when Mo turned twelve his mother saw his retardedness at an all time high as he made animal noises and drooled while playing with kids at the park. Sherie was embarrassed to have him out in the public view so she decided to lock him inside a dog cage. Mo was sad and didn’t understand why his mother treated him that way so abruptly. He was permitted to leave the cage when he stopped all that drooling. Because of Mo’s disabilities he did not have the capability to stop it. He asked her for help and she reluctantly helped him while degrading him. “You filthy mouth boy! You embarrassed me at the park today! No more park for you!”
He groaned and made chirp noises while giving her doe eyes through the holes of the cage. “I-I’m sorry mommy-” he whispers “please let me out.” Her eyes lowen and she scoffs at him. “No.” she said in an unmoving tone and walked away in her green bottom heels. His doe eyes followed the clicking steps of her heels and thought about when he would be let out. Mo was a handsome boy despite his abnormalities in looks and behavior. He has a sharp line indented between his eyes from exercises to bring his eyes together after them being cocked at birth. Mo had gone through a lot of exercises and special education learning to make his mental delay less visible and please his sometimes cold-hearted mommy. Minutes after his drooling stopped he yelled wishing to go to a puppy shelter. His mom heard his wish and her heels clicked towards the room that he is caged in. “Ooo you want a puppy, my big Mo? Okay! Yes mommy can get you one!” She smiles and rubs the top of the cage. “Uhuh! I want to go soon. Please.” he says with excitement and desperation.
“We will go as soon as the morning sun sets, Mo. Be a good boy until then.” She smiles at him dearly. “Okay! I’ll be a good boy.” He smiles back at her with a sparkle in his eye. “I’ll go make us dinner since it is now 6 p.m.” Mo nods his head and twiddles his thumb until it's done. The mother comes back an hour and a half later placing his dinner plate on the table and unlocks the dog cage she placed him in. “Dinner is served, my dear boy. Go ahead and enjoy it.” Mo rushes out the cage while exclaiming okay. He sits at the table and stretches his legs, then he picks up the fork and tastes his mothers mediocre cooking. It isn’t the best but it's fulfilling and he loves his mother very much. Mo finishes his dinner and heads to bed for a lullaby.
“Oh sweet Mo, so precious and so bright. I love you more than my perfume line. Goodnight.” She leans towards his pillow and gives him a kiss on the forehead. Mom becomes more gentle and sweet at night. Mo closes his calm eyes and goes to sleep. At nighttime is when Mom gave birth to him. So it’s all in her chemistry to be nicer, how delightful! You should wish Mo Bunty a goodnight sleep also and hope the best for his adoption tomorrow. The sun rises up after a couple of hours and the dim sun lights on Mo Bunty’s face. The atmosphere is cool and happy. A light breeze of wind passes by from his window to his room, it leaves a feeling of “Goodmorning!” Mo wakes up and smiles. He likes this feeling and at this time being disabled doesn’t feel so bad. No judgment, no rude remarks, and no careful stares.
He sits up and yawns for a moment. Then he goes to the bathroom and brushes his teeth. He sets his toothbrush aside and proceeds to wash his face with warm water. He puts on lotion and then stretches in front of the mirror. He always stares at his middle line between his eyes. It is a mark of achievement and one that will never go away. He leaves the bathroom to collect his day outfit. It consists of blue plaid shorts, a tan shirt, and a yellow arm bracelet. It matches his skin tone perfectly. He goes to the kitchen and looks around at all the food and sees some cereal by Quaker Oats. He wants to hop up but can’t so he goes down the hall to his mothers room. He hardly taps her shoulder to wake her up and she responds slowly. She raises her head and smirks at him. “What is it Mo, boy?” He points his thumb to the hallway and says cereal. She understands and slowly gets up to help him.
They both walk to the kitchen after a few brief minutes. She sees the Quaker Oats cereal, Lucky charms, and oatmeal. “Which one do you want today?” she asks. He responds saying “Quaker Oats please.” she whispers okay while nodding her head. She reaches for the box at the top of the fridge then hands it to Mo Bunty. Mo Bunty whispers thank you and reaches into the fridge for a bottle of milk. She smiles softly and then grabs him a bowl from the empty kitchen sink. Along with a spoon she hands it to him and then whispers bye, see you later and slowly walks back to her room. He just stares at her back and she’s walking away and then pours his cereal bowl. He heads towards the nearby couch in the living room and eats it. He says “MMM. Cinnamon and granola. Good brain food.” as he takes bites. What a good start to a good morning.
Hours go by and Mo is done eating. It is now the early afternoon and he is patiently waiting for his mom to come out. He whines and it travels to his moms room. She wakes up and is reminded that she’s supposed to visit the dog shelter with Mo today by his whine. She gets dressed in a couple minutes and heads towards the kitchen to have some oatmeal. She waves at Mo and apologizes for nearly forgetting. He turns around and nods his head and says that it’s okay. A couple minutes passed and she finished her oatmeal. Her outfit is casual but cute and Mo’s is just good. They both signal each other to leave out the front door and hop inside the car.
They drive to the nearest shelter to see the good dogs they might adopt.
Mo is so excited he smiles and lets out excited noises! His mother gives him a precious smile when they arrive at their location and hop out the car. Once inside they are greeted by some bright and sweet staff. They’re wearing blue and white shirts with black cargo pants and protective sneakers. They look good and professional so both their eyes light up! Mo holds his mothers hand with one arm and waves with the other arm. They approach the counter and go through the visitation process. They see all kinds of well-groomed and adorable dogs locked in clean cages. Mini golden retrievers, beagles, chows, collies, and boxers. They are all well-trained and seem to be ready to pick up! Mo jumps up and down with a gleam in his eyes and begs for the Beagle to be let out.
The male staff member nods his head in approval and unlocks its cage for the boy to play with it. He instructs the boy to pet it gently by rubbing her head. Mo follows the instructions and feels its soft fur and skin. It is such a pleasurable experience. He encourages his Mom to do the same and she asks for the Collie to be let out. The male staff member lets him out and she plays with him by telling him to roll over. What fun this is! It is also a great bonding time for the two! The staff smile at them and ask which one of the two breeds will be adopted? Sherie looks to Mo to respond since it’s his special day. He pets the beagle and says “This one please.” He tilts his head to the side with puppy eyes. The staff member says okay and looks to the mom for confirmation.
She agrees and the male puts a leash on the dog and leads them towards the checking out counter. He fills a bag up with a food bowl, a water bowl, a grooming brush, and a care pamphlet. He leads the dog leash to the woman and her son and she leaves the shelter with happy smiles. Sherie leads the dog to the backseat with Mo and carefully watches him while she drives. “Aren’t you lucky Mo?” she asks with delight. “Yes I am!” he answers with a bright smirk. “Great!” she responds, smirking too. They head towards a local Jack-in-the-box restaurant and order something fulfilling through the drive-through menu. The mascot always makes Mo smile, it is a white ice cream clown with red cherry lips and a cone on its silly head. Focusing on the cone makes him laugh.
This is the happiest day of his life but as this story goes it will only get worse. Sherie ordered a Sourdough Jack Combo while Mo ordered a Burger Mash Combo and the dog got a cheesecake slice. Next off Sherie drives to a local dog store while Mo eats and feeds his beagle afterwards. “Nom nom nom nom.” Her time spent in the store is short but good. She feels like a great new mom buying things for her new puppy and thinks of a plan to treat Mo better since he’s becoming a big boy. She thinks about letting him babysit children depending on how good he treats his new dog. It’ll be a great influence and a way for him to make bonds.
