And you could be my brother, once again.

Summary:

Samon's been struggling with insomnia, recently.

When he finally falls asleep, he may accidentally time-travel instead. Or maybe this dream is just really realistic. He's not really sure, and he doesn't really care. He likes it here. He wants to stay. It's warm.

Work Text:

He tossed and turned, grumbling and sighing every other minute before glancing at the clock once again.

It's barely been a few minutes, but it feels like he's been tossing around his bed for hours. Insomnia truly sucks, huh.

Samon finally gave up on trying to sleep normally, standing up from the mess that was his bed and making a beeline for the medicine cabinet of the kitchen. He opened it quickly, grabbing the melatonin box mechanically. Samon was trying to limit his use of those meds, as his body was quick to create resistance to that type of things. But right now, he needed the sleep.

He popped two pills into his mouth, grabbing a glass of water and downing them quickly before they melted on his tongue. Yuck. Meds never tasted good.

Now, all he had to do was plop down into bed and wait for them to kick in. If they even worked. Samon was actively begging whatever deity that was listening that they would, because he could not take another sleepless night.

He could and would join Enki behind cell bars for murder.

He let his body fall into the bed, lacking any sort of elegance. It's not like anyone was watching, so who cares. Samon sighed -again-, before turning on his back and impatiently waiting for sleep.

And it sure took its sweet time.

But when he felt his eyelids finally get heavy, his mind slowly deconnecting from his body, he knew he was finally going to be able to rest.

Samon let the drownsiness wash over him, and in a matter of minutes, he was out like a light, the lack of sleep from the last three weeks catching up to him like a debt collector. Which, it kind of was.

Samon yawned as his body and mind woke up. Huh. Was it already morning? He could swear he just fell asleep. He barely felt rested at all!

Also, was that sunshine? That was weird. His room's window didn't face his bed, so the morning sunlight never reached there. But right now, his whole body was being warmed by it.

..And why did he feel grass all around him, pocking his sides and tickling him?

His eyes fluttered open, trying to get used to the flashing light of the burning summer sun. He tried sitting up - but an arm around him stopped his movements. Only then did he realise someone was beside him, very much hugging him.

Someone three or four time his size.

Also, he knew he was short, but he wasn't usually this short.

Samon raised his hand to his eyes, also using it to block the sun from his vision.

A child's hand. This, was a child's hand. Not his, with the usual rings and bracelets. Not his, with the red swirl tattoos and green painted nails. This was a kid's hand. But it belonged to his body, attached to him by the wrist.

It took Samon a minute to understand what was even going on. How he was back in his kid body, how his mind felt lighter, how Enki was snoring beside him in the grass, taking a nap in the summer sun.

This was probably a dream. But even if it was, it was a nice one. A really nice one.

Or maybe he just woke up from a dream? A really, really long dream. A really long nightmare.

Maybe he just got back home.

What was he even dreaming about, again?

He couldn't quite remember more than a few superficial details. Eh, it probably wasn't all that important, was it?

Enki grumbled gibberish next to him as he yawned, slowly waking up from his nap, automatically bringing Samon closer.

How long had it been, since he got a hug from his older brother? From anyone, in general. Why did it feel like years?

Samon almost greedily hugged Enki back - as best as he could, seeying how his arms could barely reach the sides.

"Mh? Awake?"

Two simple words. A question. Samon had forgotten how his brother used to sound, when they were younger. He didn't sound all that serious, all of a sudden. Almost layed back. Almost childish.

Right. He was supposed to answer.

"..Yeah."

Samon cringed at how his own voice sounded, high-pitched and shrill. Yeah, he could understand why people always shushed him as a kid, now. He'd do it too. His voice was high enough to cause aneurysms.

"Slept well?"

He raised his head to look at his older brother, who was looking straight at him. He didn't have that nasty scar on his eye anymore. Nor did he have the creases on his forehead, showtell of his constant state of distress. He actually looked like a teen. He actually looked his age.

"Mhm. The sun's comfortable."

Samon replied, smiling with all his teeth.

"It is. Naps in the summer are the best."

Enki replied, yawning one last time as he stretched his back, finally letting go of his little brother. To Samon's huge dissapoitement - not that he let it show. His brother hummed a little, before speaking again.

"Anyways - it's not all that, but we should probably get going. Gramp's gonna make a fuss if we come back home late again. You know how he gets. And he won't even allow us to have an afternoon snack, stubborn as he is."

Samon perked up at that. No afternoon snack? That was just cruel! He needed his icepop for survival!

He immediately nodded, getting up on his feet and dusting his clothes off. Not that it did much, he was half covered in dirt from his earlier training.

Enki got up too, doing the exact same. Except he wasn't covered in dirt like Samon. Perks of being more experienced.

The hill where they were was ideal for summer naps. One large tree on the highest point, yellow flower patches all around, green and fresh grass that never grew too tall. Unlike Enki. The sun always shone perfectly on that spot, the tree  branches offering a nice shade when it burned with too much passion. This was nice. He wanted to stay here forever.

Before Samon realised it, Enki had already started walking away. He squeaked, almost comically, then started running down the hill at full speed to catch up, which he did quickly. Immediately, Samon protested Enki's abandon.

"Hey! You could have waited for me!"

"I wasn't gonna wait around forever for you to stop grass-gazing."

His brother mocked, ruffling Samon's short hair. Man, he needed to brush it. It was messy beyond repair. Samon grabbed Enki's hand.

He convinced himself it was to stop Enki from leaving him behind again.

"I wasn't grass-gazing- I was just.. admiring the view! You gotta admit it's nice!"

"Sure, sure... Grass-gazer."

"Hey!"

They continued bickering on the way back home, walking through the wheat fields and the patches of trees that offered shade from the scorching sun. A few lizards here and there, sunbathing joyfully. A deer in the corner of the forest, running the second they got too close.

Their footsteps resonated within the moutains, to be heard for future generations who'd wonder who were those brothers who had scratched their initials into the bark of the oldest tree. Who were those brothers, who napped on the hill so much that their shapes is forever forged into the grass pattern around there?

"Gramp! We're home!"

Enki shouted as they passed the door, both mechanically kicking their shoes to the side, not caring much for aesthetics.

"Icepop time!"

Samon yelled in sync, running to the kitchen and taking out his precious frozen treat from there, before running back out to enjoy it in the sun.

His brother rolled his eyes as he noticed Samon going out barefoot.

Forgetful kid he was.

He was quick to join his brother, right after getting his own frozen treat from the kitchen. Zakuro shaved ice.

They were probably going to argue again on which one was the best. Enki snickered.
