Work Text:
A loud crashing noise woke Tom from his sleep. Rubbing his eyes, he sat up and checked the alarm clock on his bedside table. It read 6:01 am, just under an hour before he was supposed to be awaken by the irritating ringing noise from his slightly broken alarm clock that he probably should have replaced years ago.
Seconds later a quieter crash sounded again, this time he could tell it was from downstairs. Turning to his left he noticed luckily neither noise had woken up his wife. Compared to him, Maddie was a much heavier sleeper, he always joked that she could sleep through an earthquake, but he was still surprised that she was not disturbed at all by the noises occurring somewhere in their house.
Climbing out of bed, Tom grabbed his pyjama trousers off the floor and pulled them over his legs, squinting slightly when he felt how cold they were after being left on the wooden floor of their bedroom all night. Green Hills was a relatively safe town so break ins were not a common thing. But it was still good to stay on alert, especially now they had three alien children in their household, and who knows what could happen if someone found them when breaking in to the house.
As he walked down the stairs, he heard voices from the kitchen that both calmed his worries of an intruder and confused him. It sounded like the three voices of Tails, Sonic and Knuckles, trying to be quiet but not being very successful. Neither of the older two were very good at whispering. Actually they couldn’t whisper at all, more of a slightly quieter voice than they would normally use.
Entering the kitchen Tom found it was completely cover in mess. Pots, pans and bowels were lay all over the floor, filled with different kinds of ingredients. There were splashes of different coloured liquids all over the kitchen cupboards and small drops had also hit the ceiling. It looked like a hurricane had swept through the kitchen while he was sleeping, causing everything to fall out of the cupboards and on to the floor.
“What’s going on here?” He asked, making the three of them jump in surprise.
“Hey daddd.” Sonic drew out each word as he spoke, jumping around puddles and pans as he made his way over to the doorway where Tom was standing. “What brought you down here?”
“The loud noise you guys are making down here woke me up.” He tried to not sound too mad because even though he was annoyed at being woken up, especially to so much mess, he knew his kids would get affected more if they felt guilty than other kids their age.
“We are sorry for disturbing your sleep. Tails told us about an earth celebration known as mother’s day and we decided we must celebrate it with our mother Maddie.” Knuckles explained proudly. It had taken the echidna the longest to settle in to the family and it still surprised Tom whenever he referred to him or Maddie as his parents, or either Tails or Sonic as his brothers.
“And Tails suggested to cook her pancakes like she normally does for us.”
“But we forgot that none of us actually know how to cook.” Tails admitted, the only one of the group that seemed to feel guilty for the mess he caused. Even though he was the youngest, Tails often seemed to be the most aware of when he had done something wrong.
Knowing his sons cared for their mother enough to try and cook for her melted away some of the irritation Tom had at being woken up so early.
“I’m glad you wanted to do something for Maddie but you really should have let me know what you were thinking of doing, and then we could have done it together and not made such a mess.”
“We are really sorry.” Tails said, looking down at the floor away from Tom.
“Hey I am not upset at you.” Tom said as he crouched to be eye level with the little fox. “Now how about we clean this all up and make a lovely breakfast for Maddie?”
Hearing this, Tails raised his head, an excited look on his face “Will you help us?”
“Of course.”
Once the kitchen had finally become tidy again, Tom starting preparing the breakfast with the help (but mainly hinderance) of his sons.
Tails measured the flour, sugar, baking power and salt. Sonic mixed them together after being told to try and do it as slow as possible. He did it way too fast, causing flour to fly everywhere so Tom took over instead. Knuckles cracked the eggs into another bowl with some milk, melted butter and vanilla extract and mixed them together, bending a spoon or two in his overly strong grip.
Once all the ingredients were put together Tom started to make the pancakes. He didn’t let the kids do this step, he knew somehow a pancake was going to get stuck on the ceiling if he did. After he made four big pancakes he placed them on a plate. While Tails was grabbing a tray for him to bring it upstairs, Sonic sped outside and came back with a small bouquet of yellow tulips and pink lillies. Not questioning where he found them, Tom found a small vase to put them in and Sonic placed it on the tray. Tom quickly made a cup of coffee then the group slowly made their way upstairs.
Maddie woke to the smell of fresh coffee and pancakes. Opening her eyes she saw her family all sitting on the other side of the bed. Sitting up, she rubbed her eyes, trying to clean any remnants of sleep out of them.
“HAPPY MOTHERS DAY!!” Sonic yelled as quickly as he could, pushing a tray slightly closer to Maddie, nearly spilling coffee out of the slightly overfilled mug.
Looking down, she noticed it was filled with pancakes, coffee and a small vase of flowers. “You did this for me?” She asked, looking between the three of her sons.
“Well we did have a lot of help from dad.” Tails replied, an excited smile covered his small face.
Tears flooded Maddie’s eyes as she looked at what her sons had made for her, and she realised just how happy her family made her feel.
“Did we do something wrong? It was suppose to make you happy but you are crying?” Knuckles asked, slightly tilting his head to the side almost like Ozzie did when someone had food in their hand and he wanted it.
“No, no I am not upset at all. They are happy tears. Thank you boys so much.” Maddie leaned over the tray to pull her sons into a quick, tight hug.
“Now I have to eat these before they get cold.”
