Summary:

So early in the morning.. or so late in the night you'd think you're the only one awake. But are you..?

Work Text:

Jasper. A man who's always been disconnected from his emotions. The most he's ever felt? Well, hatred, of course. Always directed to that horrid mutant. But nothing more.

Tonight, he finds himself woken up. He groggily turns his head to the right bedside table, picking up his phone and checking the time. In bright, bold letters 2:17 AM stares back at him. He decides that he'll at least go get a drink of water.

He puts his phone back on the table, slowly getting out of bed, trying not to wake the sleeping Teryl next to him.

Continuing to be cautious, he slowly walks to the door, trying not to step on any cracks that could creak and possibly awake.. well really anyone. The cabin they lived in was small and old, but it made do.

Opening the door into the living room, well, it was hardly a living room. Not quite cozy, but there was a table, chairs, a sink and oven, so that's as good as needed. As Jasper raises his head he realizes there was someone there. It was.. Clive? What could he do being up so late. Well, apparently the same thing Jasper was.

By the smell, Jasper could tell it was coffee. Something Clive quite enjoyed.

Jasper poured water into his own cup and sat down next to him.

"What are you doing at this hour?" - Jasper asked

Clive, who was already looking at (though not in the eyes) him since he walked in replies "I couldn't sleep."

Ah. Almost as if it wasn't obvious he couldn't sleep.

Jasper let's out a sigh. "You couldn't sleep.. yet you're drinking coffee?" Jasper asks.

"Ah. Well I just like it."

It was true. Clive was quite fond of coffee. Often going to a café with the mutant again.

What was their name again..? Xani? Either way, that meant nothing to Jasper. All he needed to know is that he has a job to finish, and it's killing them.

Both the men sit in silence for a bit. Taking sips from their drinks, and gazing at each other for a quick second. Though, mostly Clive did that. Jasper could always tell when Clive was looking at him, but if Jasper looked back at him, the skittish Clive would look away. Nobody ever really knew why he didn't like eye contact.

"You know, I envy you two" Jasper says in his usual monotone-esque voice.

"Uh.. what?" Clive mumbles, raising his head as his eyes widened.

"As idiotic as it is, you two seem to feel passionate about something. The mutant and the way it fights to survive and.."

A pause fills the room. Was the air always this cold? For what feels like forever, but was actually a few seconds

"And the way you fight to protect it."

"Well.. it's not really that simple. You're too cruel to them. If you're going to kill them, at least don't make them suffer." Clive says. But this time, instead of his voice having a fearful tone, it's almost as if you can feel that he's saying it with his heart.

Jasper softly slams his hand, in the form of a fist onto the table. "Why do you care about it!?" He.. manages to whisper and yell at the same time. "It's a mutant!"

"Well so are you!!" Clive says back. Maybe that was a bit too loud. Though he's sure he didn't wake Natalia or Teryl.

Jasper looks at Clive with a glare that feels like poison and furrowed brows. He wants to say something but he doesn't. He drinks the last drop of water from the cup and stands up.

Right before he's about to leave, he looks back at Clive.

"We're never going to talk about this again, understood?"

Clive looks back

" Understood."
