Rock a bye baby (and dog)

Summary:

Chenford + late nights with Ava and Kojo

Notes:

I saw this video on Twitter and it was this couple rocking their baby and their cat to sleep and it just screamed Chenford.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Tim wakes up to Ava’s loud crying, and Kojo scratching at the bed. Lucy is already up scooping the baby in her arms. Tim watches her for a few minutes before he looks down at the dog who is peering up at him with sad eyes.

“I’m sorry buddy.” Tim says reaching down pat his head. “Go back to bed.” But the dog just stares up at him. Tim looks over at Lucy who is now swaying Ava back and forth it.

“She’s not hungry?” Tim asks. Lucy shakes her head, and Tim climbs out of bed to join them. He presses a kiss to the top of Ava’s head. The baby just looks up at Lucy, no signs of her going to sleep.

“She likes to party at night huh.” Tim says smoothing back Ava’s thin hair. Lucy hums softly and looks down at their daughter.

“Kojo likes to party too.” Lucy says. “I think he wants to join.” Tim looks down at the dog who is sitting at Tim’s feet looking up at him with big eyes.

“What do you want me to do?” Tim grumbles. “Rock you to sleep? Because I’m not—” Lucy laughs and Tim looks over at her.

“What?”

“I think you should rock him.” Lucy says a wide smile on her face. “He feels left out.” Tim resists the urge to roll his eyes.

“He’s a dog. I am not rocking our dog to sleep.” He says looking at the dog. Kojo paws at his feet as if he knows what they are talking about. “No.”

“I will do it.” Lucy says and she starts to hand over Ava to him but Tim stops her.

“No.” He says. “You are not picking up our 50 plus pound dog and rocking him to sleep.” Lucy tuts at him and he reaches down to scoop the dog up. He starts swaying back and forth it just like Lucy is doing with Ava.

“This is ridiculous.” Tim grumbles. “Absolutely ridiculous.” Lucy just gives him a knowing look as she continues to sway back and forth it. Tim does the same glancing over to see the baby finally falling asleep.

“You are a good dad.” Lucy says scooting closer and pressing a kiss to the top of Kojo’s head. “Dog and human.” Tim shakes his head, and he wonders how he got to this point in his life. How he got to the point of where he was up at midnight rocking his dog to sleep because Kojo needed it apparently.

He wouldn’t have it any other way though.

Not for one second.

He had a beautiful wife and a beautiful daughter who gave him everything he needed. And just the happiness and joy of having them.

“How did we get to this point in our lives?” Tim asks. He shifts a little and looks down to see Kojo drifting off to sleep. He could hold Ava for ages but the dog was heavy weight. He moves over towards the corner where they put Kojo’s bed and sets him down in it. He heads back over to Lucy who is putting Ava back in her bassinet. Tim joins her and wraps his arm around her waist.

“I have no idea.” Lucy says. “But I kind of like it.” Tim hums softly as he looks down at their sleeping daughter. She had only been here for two months but it was the best two months of his life.

Watching Lucy become a mother, watching Ava grow and change everyday. And being Ava’s dad was the greatest role that he has ever had and he was embracing it.

“I do too.” Tim says. He turns her around and leads her back to the bed. “Even when our dog wants to be rocked to sleep.”

“He’s a baby.” Lucy says as they climb into bed. Tim rolls his eyes and pulls her close to him.

“A big baby.” He grumbles but he’s smiling. “Maybe he deserves a little attention.”

“I agree.” Lucy says. Tim buries his face into her neck and nips at the skin there. “We better get some sleep. Ava will probably be up in a few hours.”

“Okay.” Tim mutters and he really is tired. “Same place. Different time?” Lucy hums in agreement and he sighs softly but it’s a happy sigh. This was a life he always wanted and now he was living it. And he was never going to take it for granted.

Late nights, rocking babies and dogs to sleep he wouldn’t have it any other way.
