Work Text:

The neon-drenched streets of Seoul blurred into a vibrant tapestry outside the taxi window as Aphelios held Y/N’s hand. His heart fluttered nervously. He adored them, a warrior forged in the fires of conflict, now seeking solace in the quiet bloom of retirement. He wanted them to feel comfortable, to see his world, the heart of Heartsteel, and maybe… just maybe… feel a part of it.

Y/N squeezed his hand back. "Don't worry, Aphelios," they said "I'm not intimidated by a few pop stars and a fancy house."

Aphelios chuckled, relieved. "It's more of a collaborative workspace than a house, actually. And they’re… enthusiastic.” He braced himself for the inevitable explosion of energy that awaited them inside.

The moment they stepped through the doors, the chaos began. Sett roared a welcome nearly crushing Akame in a bear hug before Aphelios intervened. Ezreal offered her a dazzling smile and a perfectly crafted fruit smoothie. Kayn, brooding in the corner, merely nodded in acknowledgment, K'Sante gave then a bright smile and Yone offered a polite bow.

The evening unfolded as Aphelios had predicted: a whirlwind of laughter, bad jokes, and a surprising amount of shared pizza. Y/N, initially reserved, slowly began to relax, their lips curving into small, almost imperceptible smiles as Sett recounted his latest "victory" at a local arcade.

Later, as the others launched into a spontaneous karaoke session, Aphelios noticed Y/N slip away. He found them in the band's spacious, rarely used music room. The grand piano, usually gathering dust, was bathed in the soft glow of the city night. And Y/N… Y/N was playing.

The melody was somber, haunting, a stark contrast to the upbeat pop that usually filled the room. It was a song Aphelios didn't recognize, a melancholic tune that seemed to resonate with a deep, untold sadness. He leaned against the doorframe, mesmerized.

The notes flowed from their fingertips, each one carrying a weight, a story etched in the ivory keys. He watched their face, the subtle tightening of her jaw, the almost imperceptible moisture gathering in the corner of their eyes. In that moment, the stoic soldier facade crumbled, revealing the vulnerability beneath.

He recognized the raw emotion. It was the same emotion he sometimes saw reflected in his own nightmares, echoes of the silence and the pain he carried within him. But this felt different, older, wearier.

The music drew the others in. Sett, Ezreal, Kayn, K'Sante and even Yone, fell silent, drawn to the haunting beauty emanating from the room. Even Kayn seemed subdued, his usual cynicism replaced with a rare moment of empathy.

As the last note faded, a heavy silence hung in the air. Aphelios approached Y/N cautiously, his heart aching with a newfound understanding. "That was… beautiful," he said softly. "What was it?"

Y/N didn’t immediately answer. they stared at their hands, their knuckles white against the black keys. Finally, they looked up.

"It's called 'Reluctant Heroes'," they said, their voice barely a whisper. "My brother and I used to play it for our comrades in the army. It was… their song."

The admission hung in the air, a testament to the sacrifices they had made, the pain they had endured. they continued, their voice gaining strength, “We played it to remind them that even reluctant heroes, soldiers dragged into conflict, were still heroes nonetheless, they needed to return to their families, their loved ones, and live with them under the sun, embracing life as best they could.”

A wave of understanding washed over Aphelios. He understood now. He understood the stoicism, the quiet strength, the hidden pain. He understood why they were so drawn to the peace he offered.

Sett stepped forward, his usual boisterousness replaced with a genuine tenderness. "That… that was incredible," he said, his voice uncharacteristically hushed. "You've got a real gift, Y/N."

The others murmured their agreement. Even Kayn offered a grudging nod.

Aphelios reached for Y/N's hand, squeezing it gently. "You never told me you could play," he said, a soft smile gracing his lips.

Y/N finally smiled back, a genuine, heart-stoppingly beautiful smile that banished the shadows from their face. "There's a lot you don't know about me, Aphelios," they said, their eyes filled with a warmth that chased away the chill. "Maybe, someday, I'll tell you all of it."

And in that moment, standing in the heart of Heartsteel, surrounded by the warmth of friendship and the echo of a song, Aphelios knew that he was ready to listen. He was ready to share their past, to hold their pain, and to help them build a future filled with music, love, and the quiet joy they so deserved.
