Work Text:

"Scotty, can you take a look at my communicator?" Bones approached Mr. Scott, holding out his communicator towards the other man. "I think it's broken."

"How so?" Scotty tilted his head slightly, his eyebrows furrowed.

"Well, everytime I open it, all it plays is—" Bones explained as he opened the device, but he was cut off by what blared through.

Scotty stifled a laugh at his surprise. "Interesting. You might want to speak to the Captain about that." He rested his fists on his hips.

Bones raised an eyebrow at the engineer, but complied nonetheless.

-

"Captain, my communicator's malfunctioning," McCoy started as he approached Kirk, "Scotty told me to come see you."

Kirk desperately tried to hide his face lighting up. "Could you, uh, show me what's wrong with it?"

Wordlessly, and now fully expecting to get no help with this, Bones reluctantly flipped open his communicator. Loud carnival music played through the device's speakers, only seeming to stop when McCoy closed it.

The bridge crew turned to look at Bones. Kirk barked out a laugh.

"Ha, ha. Very funny, Jim." McCoy deadpanned, rolling his eyes and clicking the communicator shut.

"Happy April Fools, Bones!" Kirk said, after he'd collected himself.

"I'm going to get you back, when you least expect it," Bones threatened, a smile growing on his lips, "Watch out."

"Captain, what is April Fools?" Spock asked. Kirk and Bones shifted their focus to the Vulcan sitting by the science station.

"It's an Earth tradition," Kirk explained. "Every April first, people go around pulling tricks on each-other."

"And what is the purpose of this?" Spock raised his eyebrow.

"For... fun," Kirk stuttered out.

"Some people, back in Ancient Earth times, celebrated the god Loki by participating in April Fools' day," A lieutenant brought up, after overhearing the trio's conversation.

"Do these tricks have malicious intent?" Spock continued to ask.

"Not always," Bones raised his eyebrow at Kirk.

Kirk dismissed the doctor's implied threat with a small laugh, returning to Spock. "It's great fun. You should take part, you still have a few hours,"

"Why only a few hours? It should be barely past sunrise on Earth," Spock furrowed his eyebrows.

"Well, April Fools' day only lasts until 12:00," Kirk answered.

"An illogical name then," Spock complained. "It should be called 'April Fools' Morning'."

After the captain believed Spock was no longer paying attention, he turned to face Bones.

"Should we pull a prank on him?" He asked, making a point to quiet his voice.

A grin cracked on the doctor's face. "I have an idea."

-

"One to beam up," Spock reported, wrapping up his visit to YuQbe' IV. "I still find it illogical that you had sent me by myself."

"Well, everyone else had to stay at their posts," Kirk lied poorly, "you were the only one I could send."

He clicked his communicator shut, returning his focus to the transporter's console. He and Bones were the only ones in the room.

McCoy clicked his translator shut soon after. "Scotty says it's all ready."

With a grin, Kirk slid the transporter's energy to maximum. Quickly, a figure began to take shape in the form of a light-silhouette and soon after it revealed itself to be Spock. However, something was different. Something was off. Kirk couldn't wipe the grin from his face. Bones stifled a laugh.

"You look a little different, Spock," Bones commented, "I think your human side is shining through." Kirk nodded in agreement.

"That's strange, Doctor, because I was about to mention that the Captain looked strange," Spock replied, tease hiding in his voice. "He looks a little... sharper than usual."

Kirk's face fell. Immediately his hands flew to his face, feeling for any change that had been made. His ears were sharp and slightly curled, and his eyebrows raised and ended in a point.

"I believe the features fit me better," Spock teased.

Kirk's head whipped towards Bones. "What happened? What did you do?"

Bones snickered. "Well, we couldn't just take off Spock's eyebrows and ears! They had to go somewhere."

Kirk spluttered, trying to find an adequate response.

"What?" McCoy laughed, "I told you I was going to get you back!"
