Work Text:
This was it. After several long months of mental battles and late nights taking "Am I Gay" quizzes online, Torao had finally gained some self-awareness.
He had feelings for Natsume Minami.
And today, he was going to confess those feelings to the man himself.
Minami sat across from him at their table for two, clearly eyeing his shirt. Torao had bought it specially for the occasion: it was a sleeveless button-down colored with large, garishly bright rainbow stripes.
"Ah, do you like this?" Torao asked with a smirk. "Just something I found in my wardrobe."
"It's… very bold," Minami replied, after a moment.
Their waitress came by to take their drink orders. Minami ordered a glass of white wine, and Torao decided on the bartender's special cocktail. After writing those down on her notepad, the waitress tore off a sliver of paper with a number on it and gave it to Minami. He pocketed it with a smile as she walked off.
Torao frowned. He couldn't imagine why the waitress would give Minami her number, but not him. Minami definitely looked gayer than he did.
Torao cleared his throat, refocusing. "You're probably wondering why I invited you out tonight, Minami. I have an important announcement to make."
He looked unsurprised. "Yes, I figured as much."
Oh, shit. Did Minami already know what he was going to say? Had he been too obvious? Maybe he shouldn't have ordered a fruit-flavored drink.
No— it was fine. He had to be confident.
"I know you've been going after me for a while, so I'm sure you'll be excited to hear this."
Minami looked at him expectantly.
"I've discovered that I'm gay."
"Oh," Minami said, an odd expression on his face. "Well, congratulations, I suppose."
I suppose?! In response to his confession, Torao had expected Minami to nearly be leaping over the table to make out with him, not a bland "I suppose"!
"Is that all?"
His heart was racing, but he had to continue. Perhaps Minami didn't want to get his hopes up and assume that Torao was gay for him.
"No, it's not just that." Torao took a deep breath, then gazed deeply into Minami's chocolate orbs. "Minami, I… I'm in love with you."
The look in Minami's eyes was like that of a homophobic dog. "Sorry, but I have no interest in men."
Torao must have been hearing things wrong. He couldn't believe his ears.
"What?"
"I'm heterosexual."
"What," he said again.
Minami sighed. "Do you not know the definition of the word? I exclusively have romantic and sexual relationships with women."
That was completely impossible…
"…what about all the times you flirted with me..?"
"I only flirt with men because it makes fujoshis desire me. Carnally."
"But Minami," Torao said, sobbing now. "I turned gay for you and everything!"
"My apologies, Midou-san, but that sounds like a 'you' problem."
Torao felt like he was going through every stage of grief at once. His tears had soaked his rainbow-colored shirt so much that it was almost see-through, showing off his abs. If Minami wasn't attracted to him like this, there was no hope.
Minami stood up from his seat. "If that was all you invited me here to talk about, then," he gulped down the rest of his wine, "I think I'll take my leave. There are women I need to have intercourse with."
With that, he abandoned the heartbroken Torao to wallow in his puddle of tears with his Super-Duper-Extra-Fruity Whisky Delight.
