Notes:

Hi everyone! Hope you enjoy this little one-shot. I had fun writing this scenario. Any feedback is welcome. (You might notice I have a soft spot for Tony!)

Work Text:

The roar of the city had finally quieted, the alien threat vanquished, and a fragile sense of normalcy was beginning to settle over New York. Stark Tower, still bearing a few scorch marks as badges of honor, was buzzing with a different kind of energy now – celebratory. Tony, ever the showman, was throwing a party. A victory bash for the ages, he’d declared, inviting everyone from the Avengers to SHIELD agents, prominent politicians, and a smattering of bewildered socialites.

Steve, still a little disoriented by the 21st century, found himself navigating the gleaming, mirrored surfaces of Stark Tower. He was on his way up to the penthouse when the elevator doors slid open, revealing a woman who took his breath away. Her dress was a marvel of shimmering fabric, the color of molten gold, flowing around her like liquid light. It was elegant, sophisticated, and utterly captivating.

She was engrossed in a conversation on her phone, her brow furrowed slightly in concentration. He caught snippets of business jargon, something about quarterly reports and stock options. Intelligent, he noted, as well as beautiful. Their eyes met briefly as she ended the call, and a small, polite smile touched her lips. It was enough to send a jolt through him. He wanted to say something, anything, but the elevator doors opened again, and she stepped out with a murmured, “Excuse me.”

He was left standing there, the image of her golden gown imprinted on his mind. He hadn’t even gotten her name. But the dress… that dress was unforgettable. He was certain he’d see her at the party.

Later, the penthouse was a kaleidoscope of flashing lights, clinking glasses, and lively chatter. Steve stood slightly apart from the main throng, nursing a surprisingly good glass of lemonade. He was surrounded by his teammates – Thor regaling Bruce with tales of Asgardian feasts, Clint perched on a high stool surveying the room, and Natasha, ever watchful, scanning the crowd. Tony was, predictably, holding court with a group of admiring reporters.

Steve’s gaze kept drifting towards the entrance, a hopeful flutter in his chest. Natasha, with her keen observational skills, noticed his distraction. “Something on your mind, Captain?” she asked, her voice low.

He hesitated for a moment before admitting, “Yeah. I met a woman in the elevator earlier. Beautiful, intelligent… she was wearing this incredible gold dress. I didn’t get her name, but I have a feeling she’ll be here.”

Just then, the crowd near the entrance parted slightly, and Steve’s breath hitched. There she was. The woman from the elevator, the golden gown shimmering under the party lights. He straightened up, a smile spreading across his face. “That’s her,” he said, gesturing subtly. “The one in the gold.”

Natasha, Bruce, and Clint exchanged a look. It wasn't a knowing look, exactly, but something… else. A mixture of amusement and perhaps a touch of awkwardness.

“Oh,” Natasha said, drawing out the word. Bruce and Clint echoed her, their voices carrying a similar tone.

Steve frowned. “What? Do you guys know her?”

They all shifted uncomfortably. Clint cleared his throat. “Look, Cap…”

Steve’s attention snapped back to the woman. She wasn’t looking at him. In fact, she was walking directly towards someone else, her expression softening into a warm smile. And then he saw who it was. Tony Stark.

She reached Tony, who had just finished his conversation with the reporters, and without a moment’s hesitation, she leaned in and greeted him with a passionate kiss. A kiss that spoke of intimacy and familiarity.

Natasha, sensing his confusion, gently explained, “That’s Pepper Potts, Steve. Tony’s… well, she’s a lot of things. CEO of Stark Industries, his partner, his… significant other.”

Steve’s smile faltered, then vanished completely. He felt a strange mix of disappointment and a touch of embarrassment. Of course. It made perfect sense. The power, the intelligence, the way she carried herself. She was exactly the kind of woman Tony Stark would be with. Someone who could not only keep up with him but also ground him.

Just as the awkward silence stretched, Tony, having concluded his greeting, turned and, with Pepper’s arm linked through his, headed towards the Avengers. They were a striking pair, Tony in a perfectly tailored suit that somehow managed to be both sharp and casual and Pepper in her radiant gown, their outfits almost coordinated in their elegance.

“Hey, guys!” Tony called out, his arm still wrapped around Pepper’s waist. “Glad you could all make it. Pepper’s been working her magic, making sure this shindig doesn’t descend into complete chaos.” He gave her a fond squeeze, a rare display of public affection that spoke volumes.

Thor, ever oblivious to social nuances, boomed, “Indeed! A most joyous occasion! And what a greeting, Stark! A true testament to your… affection for the fair maiden!” He clapped Tony on the back, nearly sending him stumbling.

Tony shot Thor a withering glare, while Pepper’s cheeks flushed a delicate shade of pink. Steve just stood there, feeling like an unwelcome intruder in a private moment. The golden gown, which had held so much promise just moments ago, now seemed like a glittering reminder of his own misjudgment. He’d been so captivated by a fleeting glimpse, so sure he’d found someone special, only to discover she was already inextricably linked to the most unlikely of his teammates.

He forced a polite smile as Tony introduced Pepper properly to him. “Captain Rogers, this is Pepper. Pepper, this is Steve.”

“It’s a pleasure to finally meet you officially, Captain,” Pepper said, her voice warm and genuine, though there was a hint of amusement in her eyes.

Steve managed a weak, “Likewise, Ms. Potts.”

The irony wasn’t lost on him. He’d been so certain he’d find her at the party, drawn to her like a moth to a flame. And he had. Just not in the way he’d envisioned. As Tony launched into a rambling story about the logistical nightmares of cleaning up Chitauri goo, Steve couldn’t help but feel a pang of something akin to longing. The woman in the golden gown was indeed captivating. Just not for him. And she belonged to Tony Stark. A fact that was now painfully, and glitteringly, obvious.

The initial awkwardness hung in the air for a few more moments, thick enough to cut with a knife. Tony, oblivious as ever, continued his animated retelling of the clean-up operation, gesturing wildly with his hands. Bruce, ever the peacemaker, tried to keep the conversation in the safe zone. “It’s amazing how quickly the city is recovering, Tony. You really pulled off a miracle with the tower.”

Tony puffed out his chest, preening slightly. “Well, when you’re a genius billionaire playboy philanthropist, miracles are just Tuesday.” He winked at Pepper, who rolled her eyes good-naturedly.

It was Thor, however, who reignited the awkwardness. He clapped Steve on the shoulder, his booming voice cutting through Tony’s self-congratulatory monologue. “Man of Iron! It seems the Captain here was quite taken with your… lovely companion earlier!”

Steve’s eyes widened in horror. He shot a desperate glance at Thor, silently pleading for him to stop. Natasha subtly elbowed the Asgardian in the ribs, but it was too late.

Tony’s head snapped towards Steve, a curious glint in his eyes. “Oh? What’s this, Cap? You were admiring Pepper’s… dress?” He raised an eyebrow, a playful smirk forming on his lips.

Steve’s face flushed crimson. “No, that’s not… well, I just… I saw Ms. Potts in the elevator earlier, and I didn’t realize…” He trailed off, the words failing him.

Pepper’s smile widened, a hint of amusement dancing in her eyes. “It’s alright, Captain. It was a brief encounter. Elevators can be quite anonymous places.”

But Thor, bless his Asgardian heart, was not done. “Indeed! The Captain was quite smitten! He was asking us if we knew the fair maiden in the golden gown!” He punctuated his statement with a hearty laugh, completely missing the discomfort radiating from Steve.

Tony’s smirk deepened. He looked from Steve’s embarrassed face to Pepper’s amused one, and a slow grin spread across his features. “So, the Captain has good taste. I can’t blame you, Rogers. Pepper does tend to have that effect on people.” He wrapped an arm even tighter around Pepper’s waist, pulling her closer.

Natasha stepped in smoothly, attempting to deflect the attention. “Thor, perhaps you could tell us more about those Asgardian feasts you were mentioning to Bruce earlier? They sounded… enlightening.”

But the damage was done. Tony’s gaze remained fixed on Steve, a teasing glint in his eyes. “So, Cap, you were asking about Pepper, huh? Did you have a charming opening line planned? Something about fighting Nazis and the Greatest Generation?”

Steve stammered, trying to find the right words. “No, it wasn’t like that. I just… she seemed intelligent and… well, I was just curious.”

Pepper chuckled softly, a warm, melodious sound. “Intelligent? Well, I certainly try to be. Though sometimes I think I need to be a mind-reader to keep up with Tony.”

Tony feigned offense. “Hey! I’m perfectly straightforward. Mostly.” He winked again at Pepper.

The tension in the air began to dissappear, replaced by a more playful banter. Tony was clearly enjoying the situation, teasing Steve good-naturedly while simultaneously displaying his affection for Pepper.

Clint, never one to miss an opportunity for a joke, chimed in. “Maybe Cap was just admiring the efficiency of the Stark Industries elevator system. Top-notch engineering, I hear.”

“Speaking of top-notch engineering,” Tony interjected, turning to Pepper, “did you see the new schematics for the arc reactor upgrade? I think it’s going to blow your mind.” He launched into a technical explanation, effectively shifting the focus away from Steve’s earlier admiration.

Pepper, ever the astute businesswoman, engaged him in the conversation, her eyes sparkling with intelligence and affection. As they discussed arc reactors and power outputs, Steve found himself watching them, a strange mix of emotions swirling within him. There was a pang of disappointment, yes, but also a grudging respect for their dynamic. They were a team, in every sense of the word.

He realized he had been foolish to think that a brief encounter in an elevator could lead to anything more. He was still adjusting to this new world, still learning the nuances of modern relationships. And sometimes, the most captivating people were already spoken for.

As the party continued, Steve found himself drawn into conversations with Bruce and Natasha, the earlier awkwardness fading into the background.

Later, as the party began to wind down, Steve found himself standing on the balcony, overlooking the glittering cityscape. The initial sting of his misjudgment had subsided, replaced by a quiet acceptance. He had met someone remarkable, even if she wasn’t meant to be his. And in a way, it was a testament to Tony’s character, that someone as intelligent and capable as Pepper Potts would choose to be with him.

He took a deep breath, the cool night air filling his lungs. He was still Captain America, still adjusting to this strange new world. And maybe, just maybe, he could learn a thing or two about modern romance from the most unlikely of sources – Tony Stark.
