Work Text:
Under the highway bridge, a patch of grass at the bank of the river. A place only populated by ghosts of past lovers and the crickets that cry in the reeds. A brush of hands, fleeting but burning, burning.
"What would you do if I died?"
Teal eyes turned to look at him, a mop of curls, the soft breeze teasing them.
Rain pours down, ground saturated to its limit. Oscar looks into the sky, watches the rain fall towards him.
"What kind of a question is that?" Oscar replied, squinting against the sun.
Lando propped himself up on his hands and looked down at Oscar.
"Would you cry?"
"Not if you keep on pestering me with silly questions" Oscar leans up towards Lando, pressing their foreheads close, lips just brushing but not touching. He could feel the light exhale of Lando's every second, and Oscar matched his breathing, eyes closed, just feeling.
The rain mixes with his tears. He keeps on looking up, fighting the waves and waves of endless emotion.
Their lips finally met, Oscar rolling Lando onto his back and bracketing his torso with his hands. Oscar could feel Lando smiling into the kiss. It couldn't get better than this.
Not just melancholia, terror, pure terror of what's to come.
They met up every day over the summer, Lando riding his bike to Oscar's double-wide at the trailer park, ringing the bell on his bike when he got there, and they shared the bike, riding doubles until they got to the river. And so the summer went by, lazy days spent at the river, the long dried grasses brushing at their entangled legs, dark hot nights in Lando's shoebox bedroom when his parents were away.
He didn't even leave a note. The prick.
The summer slowly drew to a close, warm, dazed summer days ending and real life coming into focus through September. Lando would still come to the gas station at times, sit on the counter and swing his legs back and forth.
Until he didn't.
October 31st. He always liked the drama of it.
