stay a little longer

Summary:

“Why can't you sleep?” Dohyeon asks, his voice almost close to a whisper. Wangho takes a while to respond, his gaze glued to the ceiling as if he's contemplating what to say.

“I don't know. I don't like how the walls don't listen to me when I talk.”

Dohyeon laughs out loud at that, the one where he sways his body backwards, which makes Wangho smile.

“What about you?”

“Hm?”

“Why can't you sleep?”

Dohyeon looks back at him with a smile.

“The walls don't talk, I have nothing to listen to.”

Wangho and Dohyeon are no longer roommates.

Work Text:

It's quiet.

Wangho stares at the ceiling, his lamp beside his bed illuminating against it. There's no noise besides the silent air from the humidifier above his head. He forgot to change the water in it because Dohyeon used to do it for him whenever he didn't feel like doing so.

Now it's not their humidifier, it's just his.

He mentally takes note of changing it once he wakes up, but knowing him, he'd probably forget about it, or get too lazy to. Dohyeon knows this too well so he doesn't even bother reminding Wangho sometimes and changes it himself.

Wangho breathes, his eyes fixated on the clear smoke that the humidifier is projecting. It feels warm, just like how he likes it. Dohyeon used to nag at him so much because of it since the younger prefers the cold. But still, without fail, Dohyeon lets the humidifier open instead of the air conditioner. That's just what he was like.

It's quiet.

At this time of the night, Dohyeon would be doing an insanely accurate Fizz voice impression to make Wangho laugh until he falls asleep.

Wangho slaps his face with his palms.

It's been a week since the team moved to their new dorms, a single room for each player. Wangho got the biggest room, because of course he would. It's not anything extravagantly better than his previous room that was also huge. Wangho thinks he prefers the other room just because Dohyeon was in it.

"Stop," Wangho unconsciously says aloud after getting that line of thought, his palms flying to his face again as he groans. "Get out of my head." He says to particularly no one, hoping that the voice somehow goes through the walls and reaches the person inside the room beside his.

Wangho doesn't know what his deal is. It's not like he's some kid who can't sleep alone. He prefers to sleep alone, and sharing such a private space with someone is actually not a Wangho thing. Everybody knows that. But still, when Dohyeon knocked to his room last year with his luggage in hand, he opened the door widely and let him in like he already belonged there.

It seems like Dohyeon is an exception to many things in Wangho's strict list that he thought he already set in stone.

With a cluttered head, Wangho sits up from his bed and decides to take a breather. The where is remained unanswered, but he knows he just needs to get out of his huge room that's still suffocating him for some reason despite all the open space.

But when he opens the door, Dohyeon is already standing in front with his fist up, as if he was just about to knock.

“Oh.” Dohyeon says, his voice low and not actually hinting any surprise. “Wangho hyung.”

“Dohyeon-ah.”

“Hi.”

Wangho wants to laugh. Dohyeon says hi as if he's just passing by, and not deliberately in front of his room with his hand up, ready to knock.

“Hello,” Wangho says back anyway, with a smile that he can't control.

None of them speak for a while, just staring at each other with hitched breaths, as if waiting for the other to open their mouths. Dohyeon's hands are inside the pockets of his sweatpants with his shoulders up, a habit of his when he feels awkward with just standing. His gaze shifts behind Wangho, as if to look at his room, and as if on cue, Wangho steps aside as a reply, a sign to let Dohyeon in.

Dohyeon walks in with no hesitation.

“Hyung, do you not feel like dying with all this humidity.” Dohyeon snarks, not even a question but more of a judgement. Wangho smiles with the familiarity of it all.

“You're free to leave if the first thing you do is complain.”

“You let me in.”

“You wanted to.”

Dohyeon, who's just awkwardly staring at his humidifier with his back turned on Wangho, just shrugs his shoulders. “Couldn't sleep.”

Wangho sits back down at the edge of his bed, sighing out loud. “Me neither.”

He looks up at the other, who's just staring down at him with a face Wangho can't describe. Dohyeon has always been hard to read, and at times like these that the jungler wishes his ADC was an open book. Wangho feels smaller under his gaze.

“Your room is big.”

Wangho snorts, scratching the back of his nape. “It's nothing different from the one that we had.”

Dohyeon continues to look around, as if memorizing every detail. Wangho doesn't know why he feels exposed, because there's nothing in here that the other has yet to see. For one whole year, everything that Wangho owned was in Dohyeon's space too for a while anyway.

“It's definitely bigger.” Dohyeon murmurs as a conclusion after he's done spectating, looking back down at Wangho with a huff.

“It feels bigger ‘cause it's just me here. That's all.”

It's silent again for a while. Dohyeon's gaze is set on the small picture of HLE on Wangho's bedside table, while the older is looking up at him while his foot fidgets.

“Dohyeon-ah.”

Dohyeon immediately jerks his head to the other, and Wangho taps beside him on the bed with his palm silently, a quiet invite.

The younger slowly follows and sits down beside Wangho, still keeping a little bit of distance between them. Wangho slowly lays his back on the bed, his legs still dangling on the floor. Dohyeon looks at him as he does so, his hands still inside his pockets.

“How's your room?”

Dohyeon hums as if to think. “Not as big as yours.”

“That's not what I asked, stupid.”

Dohyeon smiles, huffing as he does. “Well, it's chilly.”

“That's how you like it, no?”

He doesn't get a response for a while, until Dohyeon looks back at him again with a shrug.

“It gets too cold sometimes.”

Wangho doesn't want to think deeper than that. Instead, he just hums as a response.

Wangho's cheeks gradually blush a hue of pink, to which he responds immediately by throwing a pillow to Dohyeon's face.

“Wha—”

“Go to sleep.”

Dohyeon removes the pillow from his face and puts it on his lap, obviously trying not to laugh with the way his cheeks are scrunched up. “You're already kicking me out?”

“Who said I was kicking you out? I just said go to sleep.”

Wangho moves to properly lay down on his bed, scooching over to the side as if to give the other more space. Dohyeon stares at him, unmoving.

“Are you going to sleep or what?” Wangho complains, not even looking at the other, his cheeks still flushed with a hint of pink. Unfortunately for him, Dohyeon does notice it despite the dim lights in his room, to which he smiles, deciding to follow and resting his body next to Wangho's.

“Should we turn on the AC?”

“Are you not cold, you reptile.”

Dohyeon snorts. “That's new. I thought I was cockroach, now I'm reptile?”

“‘Cause you're really like a snake.”

“And you're really like a peanut.”

Wangho looks at him with a raised eyebrow.

“That's a compliment. Peanuts are cute. And small.”

Wangho groans, shoving another pillow to Dohyeon's face with his face completely red. “Vipers are so annoying and slimy.”

“Really? That's all you got?” Dohyeon says while laughing, trying to take the pillow away from his face.

“And long and scary. And doesn't know how to listen to me.”

“I listen to you all the time.”

“You were posting on Instagram when I was talking to you!”

“Did it ever occur to you that maybe vipers can multitask?”

Wangho busts out laughing, not even bothering to cover his mouth like he usually does. Dohyeon stares at his lips for too long. “Can they, now?”

“Yeah. I listen to everything you say, hyung.”

Wangho calms down for a bit and hums in content. He knows Dohyeon is telling the truth because he's seen it for himself. His ADC is a good listener, and is perfect for someone like Wangho who talks just to talk, as if he's obsessed with his own voice. Luckily for him, Dohyeon likes his voice as much.

“Well you didn't have much of a choice when we were roommates.”

“I had a choice. I could just go to sleep when you're talking if I didn't want to listen.”

“Hey, you did that a lot. I had to wake you back up.” Wangho rolls his eyes dramatically, finally looking beside him, only to see Dohyeon already looking back.

“Okay. But I did wake up every time, right? For you?”

Wangho turns quiet at that. They just stare at each other for a bit while lying down, neither of them wanting to pull away from the eye contact. The jungler can feel Dohyeon's warmth despite the space in between them, but maybe that's just his face that's already gradually heating up again from reasons that he doesn't dare to ask.

“Can you turn on the AC?” Wangho whispers, not really knowing what to say.

Dohyeon smiles, “Still bossing me around in a room that's not even mine anymore.”

“I got used to it.”

Dohyeon complies anyway, reaching for the remote and setting the temperature, not so low and not so high either, the temperature that he knows Wangho likes.

“I think I'm sleepy.” Wangho whispers after, his eyes closed comfortably while still facing Dohyeon beside him. The ADC hums while staring at his face.

“I guess I've entertained you enough.”

“Mhm.”

“My job here is done, then?”

“Don't go.”

Wangho's reply is instant, his eyes still closed but his eyebrows are furrowed. His left hand rests in between them while the other is under Wangho's head, and if Dohyeon wants to reach out to it, he can. He decides not to.

Still, Dohyeon shifts closer to the other, mirroring Wangho's position. “Okay. I won't.”

The time passes by quietly after that, with Wangho calmly breathing and Dohyeon watching, sleepiness slowly creeping up to him as he feels comfortable just like this.

“Good night, Dohyeon hyung.” Wangho silently whispers, as if he's saying it in his sleep. Dohyeon jolts awake and huffs to himself.

“Good night, Wangho.”

Geonwoo was in the middle of taking a bite of his sandwich when Dohyeon walked out of Wangho's room.

He stares at the sleepy figure of Dohyeon, glasses not even on his face but on his hand, walking lazily back to his room while rubbing his eyes. Geonwoo stares at him dumbfounded, trying to connect some dots in his head.

“Hyung.”

“Huh?”

Dohyeon looks back with squinted eyes while Geonwoo is in the middle of chewing.

“Uh.. you look like you just got the best sleep of your life.”

Dohyeon blinks and points at his sandwich, not even processing what Geonwoo just said. “That looks good.”

“You can't even see it. You don't have your glasses on.”

“Hm. You're right.”

With that, Dohyeon goes back to his own room, leaving Geonwoo even more confused.

“I think I'm the only normal person in this house.”
