But I overthink. Then I’ll overexplain.

Summary:

Diamond forgets to tell Jackie she’s gone out and Jackie starts to spiral.

Notes:

I’ve seen 17 people clicked on my last thing. Who are you?

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

The first thing Jackie notices when she walks into the house is a pair of shoes missing.

At first, they don’t think anything of it. The shoes belong to Diamond so maybe she just got called to the studio for some reason.

So Jackie doesn’t think anything of the missing shoes. Diamond will come home. She knows this.

She knows Diamond wouldn’t do anything that would hurt her.

Though the least Diamond could do would be to send her a message for where she went.

It’s been a few hours now and there still hasn’t been any news from Diamond for where she’s gone.

Normally Jackie isn’t one to push for someone’s location but not knowing Diamond’s is starting to worry her.

What if Diamond got hurt?

What if she’s somewhere where no one can get to her?

What if someone’s taken her?

What if she’s seeing someone?

What if she che-

Jackie lets out a whine of pain as her hand touches the hot pan.

Instantly she walks to the sink to run cold water over it. She lets out a sigh as she leans against the counter, watching the water run down her hand.

They shouldn't let their mind wander. Diamond is okay. Diamond wouldn’t do anything like that to Jackie. She doesn’t need to check. She’s not controlling.

Diamond will come home soon and tell her about it.

She knows she will.

She always does.

But first, Jackie should finish cooking their dinner. She doesn't want Diamond to come home to no food.

–

It’s near 2:30 am when Jackie hears the front door open. They know who it is.

She wants to get out of bed. She wants to run to Diamond. To hug her.

But she… just can’t.

After Jackie ate dinner alone, her mind started to make scenarios up that she didn’t want to imagine. She knows Diamond would never do what those Scenarios were showing so why was her brain showing her this?

Jackie curls up in the bed, holding the pillow Diamond usually sleeps on. Her smell brings some comfort but not a lot because of the scenarios.

She hides against the pillow when she hears the bedroom door open before closing again when the person steps into the room.

The person walks towards the bed before sitting down on the edge.

“Seems like I get no pillow tonight.” The person mumbles.

Oh how badly Jackie wants to turn around and hug Diamond. But her mind stops her.

“Ah.”

They feel Diamond lean over her and try to grab the pillow but Jackie tightens her grip on it.

“Okay, okay… no pillow for me.”

A soft kiss is placed on Jackie’s head before Diamond walks to the bathroom.

And Jackie? Jackie starts to cry.

This whole time, Jackie’s brain has been making up scenarios where Diamond cheats.

At first she thought they were stupid. How could someone like Diamond cheat? The only person other than Nani who let them be themself.

But the more scenarios Jackie’s brain thinks of. The more she starts to see the links.

Diamond has been going out too often though usually, except today, she’s told Jackie where she’s going.

Diamond has been staying out late into the night with friends.

She’s been to social events and who knows what goes on there. Jackie sure doesn’t.

Jackie jumps when she feels arms wrap around her and a warm breath hitting the back of her neck.

“What’s wrong…?”

It’s Diamond. Of course it’s Diamond. Who else would it be?

At first, Jackie doesn’t respond and Diamond doesn’t push. Slowly but surely, Jackie turns around in Diamond’s arms, her grip on the pillow still true.

They’re face to face now and Diamond can definitely see she’s been crying. A hand moves off Jackie’s waist to slowly stroke Jackie’s eye that would be red if they weren't robotic.

“Buttercup… what happened?”

Diamond’s voice is soft and so full of love all Jackie feels now is guilt. How could Jackie ever think this girl would ever cheat on her?

Tear’s start to form again and Jackie hides against Diamond’s neck. Diamond’s hand naturally moves to hold them close. This only makes Jackie feel worse.

“I-I’m sorry… I’m so sorry…”

Diamond’s clearly confused by them but she just keeps Jackie close, mindful of the scars on her back.

“Sorry? Sorry for what?”

“I-I… I know you… you would never… cheat… But my head… my head just keeps making up scenarios and, and, an-”

A finger pushes against her lips and to Jackie, it looks like Diamond is trying to not laugh. This confuses Jackie enough for her to stop crying.

They move away from Diamond’s hand. “W-wha…? Why are you laughing?”

“Because, my flower, I thought I messed badly but turns out it’s just your head.”

This annoys Jackie. She pushes Diamond onto the bed before crawling on top of her so they’re sitting on her stomach, pillow long forgotten.

“But doesn’t it annoy you that I thought that? That I thought you were cheating? That… I’m an overthinker?”

She watches as Diamond’s face stares up at hers with love. Just love. No resentment. No annoyance. Just love.

“Hmm, no, not really. Doesn’t annoy me at all.” Diamond smiles up to her, a small fang poking out from her upper lip.

“But I overthink…” Jackie looks down. Her voice becoming quiet.

Diamond shifts slightly so she’s resting on her elbows before resting a hand on Jackie’s cheek, guiding her head up so their eyes meet. “Then I’ll overexplain.”

The look on Diamond’s face is complete seriousness. This gets Jackie to giggle slightly.

“There she is… where’d you go?”

Diamond moves the two so Diamond is sitting against the headboard with Jackie straddling her lap.

“Lost in my stupid head.” Jackie sighs and leans her chin atop Diamond’s shoulder.

“Hey, I like that stupid head of yours.”

Jackie just laughs again as they feel a kiss against her temple.

“I love you Jackie. If ever you have those thoughts, remember that mother of yours will hunt me down for the rest of time, literally. Same with that snake dude! What's his name…”

Jackie sit’s up a little and cup’s Diamond’s face, making her look up. “Fig. His name is Fig.”

Diamond just smiles up to Jackie before craning her neck to kiss them on the nose.

“Fig then. That dude is freaky af… those snake people or whatever they’re called your mom has are cuter when they aren’t massive.” Diamond wraps her arms around Jackie’s waist, pulling them closer. This makes Jackie wrap her arms around Diamond’s neck.

“Tempus won’t like that you’re calling her snakelets that.” Jackie muses as she plays with one of Diamond’s braids.

“Oh well.”

The two fall quiet. It’s nice. But Jackie can’t stop the nagging voice. “So, umm where… have you been exactly?”

“Hm, oh, that’s a secret.”

Before Jackie could ask, she feels a kiss on their neck. This also stopped the negative thoughts trying to push their way into her mind.

“And don’t worry that pretty little head of yours, the surprise is for you so do be patient.”

Jackie nods dumbly. “Right… okay, yeah.”

A yawn suddenly makes their way out of Jackie and Diamond chuckles. “And it looks like it’s bedtime now.”

Jackie nods again, more tiredly this time. They make their way off Diamond and lays down. Diamond lays next to Jackie after fetching her pillow off the floor.

“Goodnight buttercup.”

Jackie hums softly and moves closer to Diamond. She doesn’t want to be away from her so she’ll stay as close as she can.

Arm’s wrap around Jackie and they finally relax for the first time that night.

“Night night…”

And so Jackie falls asleep in Diamond’s arm, happy.

Notes:

Hello again. If again people read this who isn’t me or my friend these are the characters mentioned who aren’t the girls.

Nani (yes it’s what I’m Japanese): she’s Jackie best friend and they met in little school.

Tempus: she is literally the god or concept of time, nickname ‘Watcher of time’. And she has little snacklet’s who go out and get rid of any time anomalies. She adopted Jackie (but not really) after Jackie found a clock that helps her time travel.

Fig: he’s one of the snakelets that Jackie grew fond of. He’s basically her older brother and he’s like a general for some of the other snakelets

Yes I’m writing a full story. I’m just slow and like angst a little too much. ;)
