Chapter 1: [a heist crew boards a plane]

Chapter Text

The next out-of-the-country job that they take, Coat watches over her shoulder as Spider fusses and mutters over the available plane seats. There’s a serviceable chain of four seats in row 54 - however, it’s divided neatly down the middle by the aisle. Coat opens her mouth to say, that is perfectly fine by her, but Spider silences her with a glare before she can get a word out. Exits the website without completing the booking and begins scrolling through tickets for different days again.

In the air eight days later, there’s a tap on her shoulder as she’s lightly dozing and she opens her eyes. Talker motions with one hand, eyes never leaving the novel he snagged from the airport bookshop. “Lie down.” He nods up at the seatbelt sign, which is now unlit. She must have missed the sound. Talker makes an impatient gesture when she unbuckles her seatbelt and begins leaning in. “Other way. Leech makes a better pillow.”

Leech smiles blindingly and pats her leg when Coat looks at her with the question in her eyes. Satisfied, Coat rearranges herself and wriggles into a comfortable position. Talker lifts his arms up to accommodate her legs and maneuvers them to his liking before he settles his book on them.

Impulsively, Coat stretches up and brushes her palm against the knee she finds there. A pause before Spider’s hand comes down to cover her own, stroking a thumb against one knuckle. Coat drifts off like this to the hum of filtered air circulating throughout the cabin and the murmur of conversations around them - and cutting through the white noise, the tap tap of perfectly manicured nails against a keyboard and the occasional turning page of a second-rate detective novel.
