Work Text:

Jane's heart pounds as she recalls the day's humiliating events, intertwined with her deepest fears. The court jester's prank, convincing her to wear a bucket as a helmet, has left her exposed and vulnerable. Her secret phobia of the dark, witnessed by Gunther, her fellow knight-in-training, haunts her. She fears Gunther, the son of a cunning merchant, adept at manipulation, will exploit her weakness.

"He knows my secret," Jane whispers, her voice blending with the distant wind's howls. "Bound by the Knight's Code, he can't reveal it, but he'll use it to his advantage."

The kingdom buzzes with preparations for the carrot-themed banquet, orchestrated by the eccentric cook, Pepper. The air carries the scent of lavender, favored by the resident ghost, adding an eerie touch to the tense atmosphere.

Jane's thoughts drift to rumors of a wolf pack beyond the castle walls, a threat that feels all too real. "Gunther, with his arrogance, thinks he can outsmart anyone," she mutters, frustration mounting. "But he won't outwit me. I must confront my fears and prove him wrong."

The kingdom's peace shatters as news spreads that Princess Lavinia, seeking adventure, has entered the ancient maze and not returned. The night's tranquility turns to chaos, summoning the knights to action.

Jane's heart sinks at the situation's gravity. "Trapped in the maze with Gunther, armed with a torch and wooden swords, searching for the princess while evading wolves... It's a living nightmare."

Gunther's stubbornness shows as he suggests a strategy defying logic. He proposes a path away from the howls, a decision Jane knows is ill-advised. Her instincts urge her to confront her fears, embrace the darkness, and prioritize the princess's safety.

"I must oppose his plan," she resolves, determination growing. "I'll face the shadows for the princess, for my honor, and even for Gunther. I'll listen, smell, touch, and think my way through this labyrinth." She pauses to think about the tragedies of this year. It's already approaching Samhain of 208 B.C., and she's lost so much. In a whisper, she adds, "Mother, I'll make you proud."

Jane takes a deep breath, rising with her heart pounding in anticipation of the labyrinth's challenges.

High above, the young dragon, Kilgharrah, soars through the night sky, his massive wings cutting the air with graceful power. Despite his youthful 300 years, he possesses innate wisdom and a deep connection with the kingdom's children, especially the young knights-in-training. Affectionately known as Dragon, he is on a crucial mission to find the missing Princess Lavinia.

Kilgharrah's heart weighs heavily with concern as he scans the maze's intricate pathways, his sharp eyes searching for the princess. He's aware of the wolf threat, and his fiery breath, a formidable weapon, must be used cautiously to protect those he seeks to save. Kilgharrah's thoughts turn to Gunther, the eldest of the young knights at 14 years. The dragon respects the boy's courage and recognizes a glimmer of goodness beneath his brashness. Gunther shares a connection with Jane, the fiery-haired 12-year-old who has formed a special bond with the dragon.

Jane's understanding of Kilgharrah's language and ways sets her apart, and he cherishes their unique friendship. But it is the princess, the youngest at just four years, who is the primary focus of Kilgharrah's mission.

Princess Lavinia, with her adventurous spirit, has ventured to prove herself as a knight, like her friend Jane. Kilgharrah's heart aches for her, and he continues his search.

As he circles, a fleeting glimpse of purple catches his attention. His heart races as he spots torchlight in a maze corner, fearing the worst. But upon closer inspection, he realizes it's a trick of light reflecting off manganese. Kilgharrah sighs in relief, knowing the princess is not in immediate danger, yet his vigilance persists. The dragon continues his aerial search, senses alert for the princess or the wolf pack. He knows the children of Kippernia, descendants of dragon-speaking lineage, trust him to keep them safe. Determined to honor that trust, especially for Jane, the fiery-haired young knight who has captured his heart with her friendship, he soars on.

The maze's twisting paths echo with Gunther and Jane's soft footfalls as they navigate the darkness, wooden staffs at the ready. Despite their shared mission to find Princess Lavinia, tension lingers between them, a remnant of past disagreements. Gunther, ever perceptive, senses Jane's unease and decides to address it.

"I see you're seeking a distraction," Gunther says, his voice low and steady.

Jane, taken aback, glances at him, their backs still pressed together defensively. "What do you mean, Maggot Brain?" she retorts, unable to resist a jab.

"The name-calling," Gunther explains, his voice hinting at amusement. "It's your way of seeking distraction. Where's the nest?"

"It's a pack of wolves, Gunther," Jane corrects, frustration lacing her voice. "Not a nest."

"I'm learning knighthood, not zoology," Gunther sighs, gently guiding them around a corner. "The name doesn't matter. We're in a tight spot, and they're formidable."

Jane is momentarily stunned by Gunther's uncharacteristic seriousness. "I've never heard you so certain."

"We're usually not under attack," he admits, his voice softening. "Would you prefer I complain about debts or your giant lizard?"

Jane smiles at his attempt to lighten the mood. "Hearing you be yourself would be nice."

"Agreed," Gunther says, his tone turning playful. "You'll have my regular self after we rescue the princess. Deal?"

Jane nods, her heart warming at this understanding. "Deal."

Their spat forgotten, they continue with renewed determination. The maze's flickering torchlight casts eerie shadows, adding foreboding.

Suddenly, a soft whimper pierces the silence, freezing them. It's the sound they've dreaded—the wolves. Gunther, instincts honed by training, nudges Jane towards an alcove, motioning for cover. He positions himself protectively, their wooden swords drawn. The whimpers turn to growls as the wolves emerge, eyes gleaming with hunger.

"Stay behind me," Gunther whispers, his voice steady despite fear.

Jane obeys, using shadows for concealment. She watches in awe as Gunther, with confidence beyond his years, faces the wolf pack. He brandishes his sword, the torchlight glinting off the wood, and lets out a battle cry echoing through the maze. The wolves, taken aback by his boldness, hesitate. Gunther seizes the moment, lunging forward, his sword connecting with the lead wolf. The pack, startled by their alpha's injury, retreats into the darkness, growls fading.

Jane emerges, breath catching at Gunther's bravery. "Incredible," she whispers, admiration filling her voice.

Gunther, chest swelling with pride, offers his hand. "Let's go. The princess-"
