Work Text:
Karina was practically smiling like a fool at her phone. Staring, smiling, and giggling, she could easily be mistaken for crazy—or perhaps, crazy in love. This piqued her girlfriend,Winter, her interest. Sitting beside her with a cone of ice cream in hand, Winter looked curiously at her girlfriend’s weird behavior.
They were on a date at the amusement park near their school. They had just finished school and decided to go out because it was a rare occasion—Karina didn’t have any band or volleyball practice, and Winter wasn’t cooped up in her student council office, buried in schoolwork.
“What are you smiling at? You look like an idiot.”
In Winter’s eyes, Karina looked like a puppy wagging its tail excitedly at a treat. She couldn’t help but think that her girlfriend looked adorable, though she was also curious about what had her so captivated. Karina was staring at her phone, probably watching a video, as the same song kept repeating again and again.
Karina finally averted her attention to Winter.
“Oh, nothing. Hehe,” she said with a sheepish grin.
She smiled, looking like a rotten clam. Still, Winter found her cute.
“Come on. Quit looking at your phone and let’s go on a ride,” Winter said, grabbing Karina by the hand and dragging her toward the rides.
---
They had fun.
Putting their phones aside, they didn’t even record their date this time. Instead, the phones stayed tucked away in their pockets as they enjoyed little moments like this, storing them in their box of memories.
They went on multiple rides, including the roller coaster—which happened to be Karina’s biggest fear, second only to pigeons.
Winter was having fun, of course, though she also got a laugh out of Karina being a scaredy-cat. Karina was screaming for her life, sputtering out prayers that she wouldn’t die that day, all while holding and squeezing Winter’s hand for dear life.
Winter enjoyed it, of course—enjoyed the feeling of Karina’s hand tangled with hers, enjoyed the way Karina hugged her tightly once they got off the ride because her legs were shaking with fear.
Winter still thought her girlfriend was cute. Like a puppy.
At the end of the day, they both enjoyed the date and walked home together. Karina was staying at Winter’s house because her parents were out of town, and they didn’t trust Karina enough to let her stay home alone. So Karina opted to staying at her girlfriend’s house instead.
They walked hand in hand. Karina would yawn, and Winter would cover her mouth because Karina had no manners when it came to yawning—and apparently didn’t know how to cover her mouth, either.
By the time they arrived at Winter’s house, it was already dark.
---
Stepping out of the shower, Winter was greeted by Karina splayed out on her bed like a butterfly, already in her pajamas and staring at the ceiling. She yawned from time to time. Winter had let Karina shower first because she knew that if she didn’t, Karina would head straight to bed without bothering to shower at all.
“Hey, lie down properly. You’re not the only one sleeping on the bed. If not, you’re sleeping on the floor.”
Karina looked at her with tears in her eyes, probably from yawning. Winter couldn’t help but think her girlfriend looked like a sulking puppy. She smiled inwardly.
“I’m going to do some work. You can sleep first.”
“No, I’m going to stay up and wait for you so we can cuddle.”
“Suit yourself, then.”
Winter shrugged, sat down at her study desk, and started her work. It wasn’t much—just some paperwork and a few assignments. Physics was a nightmare. She didn’t understand the point of calculating the moon’s gravity and forces. What was she supposed to do with that knowledge? Calculate her own force when doing things?
By the time she finished, Karina was already snoring.
Pfft. Wait for me, my ass.
Winter walked to her side of the bed and slipped under the covers beside Karina. She stared at her girlfriend’s sleeping face, gave her a quick peck on the cheek, and whispered, “Good night.” Karina tended to lose energy very quickly. One moment, she’d be like a child on a sugar high, and the next, she’d look like she hadn’t slept in three days. And Winter loved her for that.
Suddenly, it crossed Winter’s mind to check her phone—she hadn’t touched it all day. She scrolled through Instagram, watching other people’s stories.
Boring. Boring. Boring.
She was about to close the app when she came across Karina’s story.
It was a picture of her, taken during their date, with ice cream on her lips. The photo had been edited with bunny ears on her head and a bunny’s whiskers on her face. The caption read:
“Bunny can’t even eat ice cream properly. So cute. My Bunny.”
The song “I Like You The Most” was playing in the background—the same song that had been repeated earlier.
Ah… so that’s why Karina was smiling like an idiot before. Psh. Stupid.
Winter decided to take revenge on her sleeping girlfriend. She snapped a few pictures of Karina sleeping with her mouth opened and posted them on her story with the same song playing in the background. The caption read:
“Puppy sleeps with her mouth open. So stupid. LMAO.”
And at the bottom of the story, just above the reply button, she added:
“This is me taking my revenge on you, Rina” with a smirking emoji.
Satisfied, Winter exited Instagram and put her phone aside. She gave her girlfriend another quick peck on the cheek, muttered a low “I love you,” and drifted off to sleep.
---
The next morning…
Karina woke up later than Winter. If it hadn’t been for the sunlight blinding her eyes, she would have still been asleep.
She reached for her phone, her eyes still half-closed, and checked her notifications. Her inbox was flooded with messages from friends. Still dazed, she opened Instagram.
…
“Winter, you sneak!”
