Stargazing

Summary:

The Undead don’t technically need to sleep, and Chopper was up way too late anyways, so he and Funny Bone decided to go out to a quiet spot out behind the academy for a bit of stargazing.

Work Text:

Funny bone wasn’t typically a stars kinda guy, but Chopper had been looking into constellations in his spare time and wanted to show him some, so what the heck, this might be fun, especially considering who he’s doing this with. Chopper sat down in the grass, patting the spot next to him invitingly. Tail swaying gently, the skeletal canine sat down beside him. His reptilian companion’s gaze immediately shifted upwards, scanning the night sky eagerly. Funny bone looked up as well, though he didn’t quite know what to look for.

A scaly hand tapping his shoulder caught his attention. Chopper then pointed up at a spot in the sky. Funny bone’s gaze quickly shifted there. “That one there is Taurus, the bull constellation!” his reptilian companion eagerly pointed out, tracing the pattern of the stars with his outstretched hand, his tiny tail wagging so fast it was mostly just an orange blur. Funny Bone’s own tail thudded happily against the ground, mostly just happy to see Chopper so happy. The stars were pretty cool though. Looking over the stars, he spotted a formation that caught his attention.

“Hey Chops, what’s that one over there called?” he asked, pointing to a set making up a vaguely quadrupedal figure. “Oh that’s Canis Major, the Greater dog constellation, and right there next to it is the lesser dog, Canis minor, and right there is Orion!” Chopper eagerly answered, tracing along first the one funny bone pointed out, then a smaller arrangement a short ways away from it, as well as another, larger bipedal figure arrangement. “But can you guess where the greatest dog is?” Chopper then asked. Funny bone curiously scanned the sky for anymore dog constellations. Major and minor were the only ones he could find. He looked back to Chopper, a bit confused. “Where is it?” he asked, tilting his head slightly.

“Right here!” Chopper answered, suddenly leaping upon him in a tackling hug that knocked them both to the ground with a thud. If skeletons could blush, a certain canine one would be beet red.

“O-oh. I definitely knew that.” he answered, tail wagging, but a bit embarrassed that he didn’t see that coming. He could faintly hear Chopper purring, clearly quite pleased with himself. The tyranosaur’s little nub of a tail was wagging at practically the speed of sound. The sight made Funny Bone's non-existent heart skip a beat. He sighed and flopped backwards onto the grass.

Chopper got off him, laying down next to him instead, still purring like mad. The skeleton leaned into his shoulder, draping forelimbs around him, tail thumping against the ground. Chopper nuzzled into his ribs, tail still a blur. “How did i end up with someone like you?” Funny bone mumbled into his reptilian companion’s shoulder.

“I don’t know, but i wouldn’t trade it for anything.” Chopper answered with a smile warm enough to melt ice.  “I guess we just got very lucky.” Funny bone sighed, tail thudding against the grass at a pace that spoke wonders of the depths of his affections towards his scaly companion.
