Summary:

“We’re getting married tomorrow,” Betty says.

Work Text:

“We’re getting married tomorrow,” Betty says.

“Have you only just realised?” Sin teases.

“No! No of course not we’ve been waiting for weeks - I just -” Betty giggles. “It kinda didn’t feel real.”

“Can’t relate!” Deli says cheerfully. “I am ready for this.”

“Same,” Sin says. “It’s been so long.”

“It has…” Betty thinks of another world, one with no sun, now forever out-of-reach. They should have been married many weeks ago.

The courthouse at spawn isn’t the location she was expecting, but it’ll work. She’ll be with them, which is what matters.

“Oh! I finished making my wedding dress,” she says. “I think you’ll like it. It’s better than the suit I’ve been wearing, at least.” It's darkly funny, honestly. Evi killed her in the suit she married him in. There are scorch marks on the collar, wilting petals of sunflowers on the sleeves. She can’t wear that, even without the… memories attached.

Sin laughs, and Deli gives her pleading eyes. Betty grins at her.

“You’ll see tomorrow.”

“I can’t wait!”

“Neither…” Betty thinks of a couple of hours earlier, ink on her hands, tears on her cheeks. How she’d clung to that thought - I’m getting married tomorrow. She holds it close to her heart - it’s been - difficult, recently, but the thought of it helps.

Marriage is a promise, right? She tries not to think of what happened in her last marriage.

These are the two people she trusts most in the world. The people she loves, the people who have been there for her for so long. The people she chose, who chose her, again and again and again -

Betty doesn’t believe in soulmates. She believes in choosing someone and staying with them. She believes in love and trust and -

Gods. She’s getting married tomorrow, in a courthouse by the sea, and - their team name is Sunset but this feels like something far brighter, not an end, not a start, but a continuation of so many months of loving each other.

She taps her hand against the wall - the three of them don’t really fit in the tiny house she and Sin made in the aftermath of Evi killing her, so they’re currently all sat or sprawled across the three beds they pushed into the centre of the room. It’s nice.

Betty shifts position so she’s leaning against Sin’s side, head resting on her shoulder. Her fiances - gods that’s a word that makes her giddy to think of, no matter how many issues telling the truth might have caused her that day is still burnt into her mind with the brightest colours - have moved on to a different conversation topic, they’re not paying attention to her at all, but Sin wraps a wing around her without even pausing her words.

She’s so lucky. It’s been difficult, not being able to show affection towards either of them - having to act scared or uncertain or worried - Betty’s not the best at showing affection, not always, but with these two it’s always hurt not to -

She’s lucky.

This is worth it. Whatever happens, whatever has happened, this was worth it - every moment she gets to spend at their side is worth it. She should tell them that…

“Oh my gods I haven’t written my wedding vows yet,” she blurts out instead. “Oh hell.

Their laughter makes the embarrassment bearable.

The next morning finds her wandering around the courthouse - she doesn’t know where her fiances are but she knows they’ll appear soon - maybe not on-time, nobody on this server is ever punctual but they’ll be there and that’s what matters.

… She still hasn’t written her vows. She doesn’t know what to say.

She’ll work it out. First, she’s got to make sure the courthouse is safe and collect materials and try to repair spawn a little like she said she would - she dies twice in the next hour, first from a creeper falling on her head then mining a froglight under her feet and not even having time to try to bucket clutch -

After the second death she stops a moment in her respawn room. It’s claustrophobic, here, but - better than a few weeks ago, right? Not much is better than a few weeks ago, in all honesty it feels like she’s taken a lot of steps backwards because it is so hard to keep on moving now, keep getting up after the tiniest setback, exhaustion weighing down her limbs, but - at least it’s hidden, now, even if in less-than-ideal circumstances - but she’s not thinking about that on her wedding day.

She doesn't allow herself to hesitate before crafting a new heart, then runs back to spawn, retrieves her gear, and keeps on working - anything to stay busy, put the shaking in her hands to good use - she really shouldn’t be this nervous but there’s so much that could go wrong -

And the hours pass like sand slipping through her fingers and soon she’s wearing her wedding dress and staring at her own reflection and - she’s getting married today. She’s getting married

It’s not the first time… there’s an emerald ring on a chain around her neck, because Betty has been married before and still is, even though things are weird and uncomfortable and upsetting she still loves Evi4.

She loves a lot of people, in different ways - she wove references to as many as she could into her outfit today. There's a dandelion in amongst the sunflowers on her sleeve and a fishing hook shaped earring in her ear.

But above all her dress is in homage to the people she's marrying. Nara was the first person she showed it to - of course he was, he might have been planning to leave but he was always her brother - and immediately he'd started teasing her, but -

She doesn't mind it. She never has - it makes her blush and giggle but she's never regretted showing affection to her teammates and she never will.

And through something like this - it's something like possession, isn't it? These are the people who own her soul, who chose her, who she would do anything for. She likes making her devotion visible, material.

So she takes a deep breath and starts making the journey to the courthouse.

The first thing she thinks upon seeing her teammates is I’m so lucky. They’re both so beautiful - and they’re both beaming at the sight of her and isn’t that the greatest feeling in the world?

Sin immediately notices her sleeveless dress and is staring at the eye tattoo on her shoulder - Betty can’t help but giggle. She’d approached him a little while back with the design and a request - he’d immediately accepted, of course, and a couple of days later they’d spent a couple of hours with him poking the design into her skin. It hadn’t hurt as much as she’d expected, and eventually Sin was carefully wrapping a bandage around the new tattoo and pressing a gapple into her hands and Betty couldn’t stop smiling or laughing because gods.

Yeah. She’s lucky. They both look stunning - Deli’s wearing a blue dress, matching her eyes - she’s never seen Deli with blue eyes before and it suits her - Betty is so glad she chose to wear a flower crown of cornflowers a few hours beforehand now. She offers Deli a sunflower to go in her hair too - it clashes a little but Deli agrees regardless.

Sin already has sunflowers - of course. Her suit is gorgeous and Betty doesn’t know if it’s real or just in her mind but Sin almost looks like she’s glowing, her eyes are so so happy and fond and - wow. This is real.

The wedding starts late, because of course, but they rescue Deli’s friend without any issues and she’s kind and lovely and a brilliant officiant and maybe not all of their friends and loved ones can make it - Betty’s heart aches when she thinks of Nara - but it’s enough.

Slime makes a speech, and then it’s time for their vows and Betty is crying even before Deli has finished hers. A quick glance at Sin tells her he’s just as emotional - gods, Deli -

Then it’s Sin’s turn to speak, and Betty barely registers the words, will have to beg him for his vows later but the love there is so clear, so obvious and it is more than enough. They’ve all talked, before, about how difficult it is to put their love in writing, how it feels insignificant, but - this is enough. This is more than enough.

And now it's her turn. She pauses, takes a deep breath before starting - gods, she's so nervous but this is nothing she's not said before and maybe they have an audience but that's fine -

She holds the page of notes so tightly she's surprised it's still readable, but manages to stumble her way through her vows and when she looks up both Sin and Deli have tears in their eyes….

And Slime says a few final words and now they're married.

They're married.

Sunset decides to visit a trial chamber for their honeymoon - it's a callback to their first activity as a team.

Betty quickly changes out of her dress, into the new sleeveless jacket she'd hastily sewn together the other day - it's spring, right? New beginnings - it might be the end of the world but this is something new, something good, and she intends to cling onto it as hard as she can. She finishes up with clipping two rings around her horns - there are sunflowers engraved into the gold, blue gems inset. She's kinda proud of herself for those, and when she sees her teammates again they call her twisted and laugh and stare and call her beautiful and - well. It's a good ending to an amazing day.
