Chapter Text
“Everyone, close your eyes. Mayor open your eyes and choose your magic word.”
Ava opened her eyes and looked at the phone in the middle of the table. She had 4 words to choose from: USB drive, somber, Nevada, and film camera. Ava tapped on the magic word.
“Fortune teller, open your eyes and view part of the magic word.” Yas opened her eyes. “Fortune teller, close your eyes.”
“Werewolf, open your eyes to see the word.” Lilith opened her eyes.
“Everyone, wake up. You now have 2 minutes to guess the magic word.”
“Is it a bird?” Beatrice asked, but Ava turned over a No chip, meaning it was wrong.
“You know you can’t keep asking if it’s a bird and hope for the best you know?” Lilith joked.
“Shh, one day it will be a bird.” Bea chuckled.
“Guys, we’re losing time. Is it a real thing you can hold?” Cam asked, which earned a Yes chip from Ava.
“Okay, is it something I own?” Lilith asked.
Ava contemplated, “Lilith, you’re rich you basically own everything!” Cam retorted.
The question did eventually earn a Yes chip.
“What, and you doubt me?”
“Is it something we all use?” Yas asked.
Ava nodded and was abou to answer, but then remembered the rules.
“Put a Yes chip, Ava.” Bea gently reminded Ava.
“Okay, something we all use.” Cam repeated, “Oh god, why is this so hard!”
“Is it big?” Yas asked, Ava put a No chip in front of her.
“Okay, so small. Is it handheld? I mean like can you fit it in your hand? ” Bea asked. Another Yes chip from Ava.
“Players, you have one minute left.”
“Shit. Okay.”
“Is it a toothbrush?” Lilith asked, slyly trying to steer the group away from the magic word. Ava gave the No chip.
“Okay, is it technology?” Cam asked. Ava put a Yes chip.
“A mouse!” Bea said. Ava shook her head.
“Is it a camera?” Yas asked, Ava said no.
“Is it a flashlight?” Lilith asked, Ava said no again.
“A stopwatch?” Cam asked. No again.
Yas was internally struggling as to how she can help steer the group towards the magic word, without being too obvious.
“Only 30 seconds left to guess the magic word.” All three of them gave frantic guesses and all were wrong. Which meant they only had 15 seconds and 5 guesses left.
“Do you use it with a laptop?” Yas asked, desperately trying to let the group know what is handheld and can be used with a laptop. Ava said yes.
“Something we all use that is technology and that is handheld.” Bea repeated. “What the hell is this?”
“Does it make a noise?” Lilith asked. Ava gave her a No chip. Chaos broke lose and they all started talking to each other and impulsively asking questions. With Lilith, ultimately asking the last question.
Ava pressed the button on the phone. “You ran out of tokens. You now have 1 minute to find the werewolf.”
Everyone pointed at each other and started talking over each other.
“No, Beatrice you literally started off with is it a bird. You were trying to sabotage this from the beginning.” Cam accused.
“What? I literally ask that every game!” Bea exclaimed, which garnered some nods. “Meanwhile Lilith over here has what 10 No chips???”
They continued arguing, even throwing the werewolf title to Ava. Mostly though, it was between Bea and Lilith.
“We’re voting!” Yas said.
“3, 2, 1. Vote!” Bea and Yas pointed at Lilith while Cam, Lilith, and Ava pointed at Bea.
“You think I’m the werewolf?” Bea feigned hurt at Ava’s accusation. “I’m just a villager, your constituent mayor, how could you!”
“And I’m the werewolf!” Lilith said with a smug smile. This earned a lot of exasperated sighs and ‘I knew its’ from the table.
“What’s the word?” Cam asked.
“USB Drive.” Ava said.
“You didn’t say it was handheld though!” Bea said.
“No, I SAID IT WAS HANDHELD!” Ava gave Bea a questioning look, “You literally asked it and I gave you a Yes chip!”
“You look so conf…”
“I definitely said it was handheld.” Ava said calmly.
“Hey! Hey, stop yelling at me!” Bea joked. They once again started talking over each other to work out where they went wrong. After their discussion, they continued to play more rounds.
“That was a good game!” Yas exclaimed as they were cleaning up.
“Definitely. Thanks for bringing it, Bea.” Lilith said.
After cleaning up, they all sorta dispersed. Ava and Lilith went to the kitchen to get a drink. Yas went to the bathroom. And Cam went to her car to get something she forgot. This left Bea to kind of wander on her own. Which led her to sit on the backyard porch.
Ava and Lilith got back from the kitchen with a glass of water on their hand, expecting Bea to be in the living room couch. They both noticed that she was sitting alone outside. Lilith was about to go out and talk to her, but Ava stopped her.
“Lilith, I know you’re her best friend, but can I try?”
Lilith didn’t respond. Instead, she just nodded. She watched Ava grab a blanket from the couch before she went out into the backyard. Once she knew Ava was out of ear shot, she smiled and whispered, “That title hasn’t been mine since you showed up, Ava.”
Yas came out of the bathroom, expecting everyone to be on the couch, “Oh hey, where’s everyone?”
“Cam is still rummaging through her car. Ava and I went to get water, but now Ava and Bea are outside.” They both heard the front door open and turned around to see Camila.
“Where’s Ava and Bea?” Cam asked.
“Outside.” Yas answered, with a smile on her face.
“Oh sweet. Should we light up the pit?” Cam asked, not having seen what their two friends were doing.
“Oh no. Not right now.” Lilith smiled as she sat down on the couch and gave the two privacy. Cam and Yas followed Lilith’s lead.
"I can't believe Mary is missing this." Yas said. "We should text her, right?"
