football over rain

Summary:

A rainy day causes Jon's football practice to be cancelled, and now he doesn't know what to do with himself.

Notes:

Soo recently in my area there have been a lot of storms which has led to a lot of my dance classes being cancelled, and it's always a really weird feeling whenever I don't go to dance cause I'm so used to being at dance, so this fic was born. Enjoy this short and sweet thing. (man I really need to write more than 500 words one of these days-)

OH! Btw! This was written for the Smallville Spring fest, the prompt for this week was ‘storm’

Work Text:

Pit,

Patter,

Pit, patter

Pit, patter, pit patter, pit patter

The rain is really coming down now. The drops falling from the grey sky and bouncing off the roof, pit, patter echoing throughout the home almost like a lullaby, until the howling of the strong wind blows over. The house is calm, despite the downpour and gusts outside, like a fortress of warmth where solace from the cold is possible. It’s calm, yet Jon can’t sit still.

“Why can’t we just practice in the rain?” Jon huffs, turning his head from the window towards his mother. “The Meteors practice in the rain, like, all the time.”

“Because you play in an after school youth league, not the NFL.” Lois says while settling onto the couch. She always seemed to be on the move, her words quick and her eyes somewhere else, so it was hard for Jon not to notice the way her shoulders seem to finally droop down from her ears. She’s usually like this on rainy days. She settles down on the couch with a cup of tea in hand, and she sits, like there’s no responsibilities for her other than relaxing, like the only thing she hears is the pit patter of the rain.

“I mean, it’s not like we’re gonna get struck by lightning, or whatever.” A roar of thunder, then a crack of lightning. Jon grumbles something under his breath, and turns his head back towards the window.

Pit patter, pit patter, pit patter.

Rainy days are fine, Jon guesses. Rainy days just mean that he and Jordan will have to settle for video games inside. Rainy days are fine when they don’t come in and (quite literally) rain on all of his plans for the afternoon.

Football is fine too, Jon enjoys football more than rainy days. The routine it gives him is fine. Practice every afternoon means he gets ready, gets onto the field, gets a bit dirty, runs a bunch of plays, kicks absolute butt, then goes home. Football is fine whenever he doesn’t suck, or whenever it isn’t canceled by some rain.

“Well, what am I supposed to do today?”

“Homework?”

“Done.”

“Read a book?”

“Don’t have any I haven’t read yet.”

“You’ll find something.”

Jon huffs again. He tries closing his eyes and listening to the rain, but they open up again. He tries focusing on one drop on the window, but he ends up losing it when he shifts his position on the seat.

“I’m supposed to be at football, though.”

Lois lets out a breath and sits her tea down. “Feels all wonky that you aren’t, huh?”

“Yeah.” Jon nods in agreement, changing his position again. “I don’t know what to do with myself, and it sucks.” He swallows as another crash of thunder erupts in the sky, and he stays very calm about it, because he is not scared of thunder, like at all.

Lois turns to him, and she looks at him, her eyes aren’t wandering and searching for her next move. “Well, at least we’re hanging out together?” Her words aren’t rushed, they’re not racing to keep up with a story or with her mind.

Jon leans back, and lets his shoulders drop like hers. “Yeah, that is nice.”
