A birthday fic for Ray

Light angst hinted at in the beginning, but mostly fluff.

Work Text:

Dust quietly sat in his room, on the bed. He was staring blankly into the distance… Not really paying attention to much of anything. He was lost in thought, thinking of the others… Of the days that’d gone by. Of the happiness they brought him.

He never wanted to think about where he’d be without them. He really didn’t think that would be a good road to allow his thoughts to travel. In fact, he actively avoided any situation that’d make his thoughts go down that road… Not that he didn’t already know where it led.

Knowing exactly where that train of thought would take him was part of the reason he actively avoided thinking about it. It’d do him no good… So, instead, he tried to focus on the good times, the good things… How happy they made him. How thoughtful they could be… Well, how thoughtful they could be sometimes .

Stars knew that Killer could be thoughtless and a bit careless at times… But the romantic bastard had his moments of taking Dust’s breath away… Of leaving the smallest of the team, of the poly, blushing and fighting to regain his composure. It was something Dust loved about the ‘crying’ skeleton.

Dust took a deep breath, then shook his head. He blinked rapidly, rubbing his face, before he looked around. He was still in his room, the light shining through the curtains was still dim, colored with pinks, reds, and oranges. The sun was rising. He sighed, then got to his feet, stretching dramatically. He pulled on his hoodie, not bothering with a shirt, and put on his scarf.

It was early, so the others weren’t likely to be awake. He made his way down to the kitchen, silently slipping into the room. He looked around, standing in the doorway… Thinking. He wasn’t the best at cooking, but he did know how to make some mean French toast… He allowed a faint smile to form on his face, deciding to give the others a little treat… Hopefully they’d enjoy it. He hadn’t cooked for them before, normally it was Horror doing most of the cooking, with occasional takeout when no one felt like cooking.

Dust shrugged off his hoodie, hanging it on the coat rack that held the aprons. He pulled on one of them, tying it behind his back. Phantom was being a pest, but… Dust paid him no mind, working on gathering the ingredients and getting everything set up. He was tired, as he hadn’t been able to sleep, but… He wanted to do something nice for his teammates, his lovers, his mates .

The dusty skeleton focused on his work, scrambling eggs and adding some cinnamon and brown sugar to the egg mixture. He swayed his hips to an unheard melody, focusing on what he was doing. He grabbed a pan, setting it on the stove and putting butter in it. He turned the stove on and started to melt the butter in the pan.

He engrossed himself in cooking, a soft hum starting in his throat, in an attempt to drown out Phantom’s nagging and his hallucinations. He made a good amount of French toast, enough for everyone to get seconds, if they wanted to. He hoped that they’d enjoy his cooking enough to get more than one serving. He’d left the kitchen door open and forgot to close it, so the scent of French toast drifted through the castle.

The others were woken by the delicious scent and slowly made their way out of their rooms, down toward the kitchen. None of them were expecting to see Dust in the kitchen, much less cooking … Not that any of them were objecting, they were just very pleasantly surprised.

They quietly moved to their seats, watching as Dust cooked. He hadn’t noticed them, too busy cooking and ignoring Phantom’s pestering. Dust finished cooking, then started to make up plates for everyone, still humming and blocking out Phantom’s voice. He turned to set the plates on the table and jumped, visibly startled at seeing the others sitting at the table.

“O-oh, fuck, morning.” Dust said, surprised, flushing a pretty purple and pulling his scarf up to hide his face. He set the plates down on the table, sliding them in front of the others. “...Did, um… How long have you been here?”

“Long enough t’see ya hummin’ an’ swayin’ your hips, bunny.” Horror chuckled and Dust blushed darker, crossing his arms as he fidgeted with the apron.

“Aww, don’t get so flustered, we were enjoyin’ the show.” Killer said with an amused smirk and Dust gave him an annoyed look, before grabbing his plate and sitting down.

“Thank you for cooking. It looks and smells delicious.” Cross smiled at Dust, then dug into his food, prompting the others to do the same. Breakfast was a calm affair, except for Cross and Killer getting into an argument over who got the last piece of French toast… Which Horror snatched from under their noses as they argued.

Of course, Horror’s thievery earned him their playful ire and it ended in the trio wrestling on the ground, all fighting to get the last piece of French toast. It made Dust preen slightly at the fact they liked his cooking so much. However, he did stay flustered over the others liking his cooking enough to fight over it.

Once they were done fighting - Horror ended up stuffing the entire thing into his mouth to end the fight, they got to their feet and turned their attention to Dust. All three gained wicked grins and Dust squeaked, then ran, dodging their attempts to grab him. It turned into an all-out chase through the castle, with all four starting to laugh and tease each other.

Dust smiled softly to himself as he ran from the others, eyelights bright. He chuckled as he ducked into the living room, ducking down behind the couch so he was hidden from view. He held his breath, hearing the others run through the room and past him. He grinned to himself, amused by tricking them… Only for a pair of hands to grab his waist from beside him. He yelped and snapped his head over. He saw it was just Cross and relaxed, despite giving the monochrome skeleton a grumpy look.

“Caught you, little bunny.” Cross chuckled, then pulled Dust to his chest. He tilted the smaller’s chin up, giving him a kiss. Dust melted against Cross, returning the kiss as his sockets closed. Cross purred softly, then pulled away from the kiss… Only to start peppering Dust’s face and jaw in kisses, holding him close. Dust laughed softly, then returned a soft kiss to the guard, nuzzling against his jaw.

“Yeah, I guess you did catch me.” Dust agreed, wrapping his arms around Cross and hugging him tight. Cross purred and stroked up and down Dust’s spine, making the smaller shiver and arch slightly.

“Guess I’m the one that gets to keep you today. Poor Horror and Killer had some nice ideas of what to do with you… But I won~” Cross hummed smugly, then scooped Dust up, carrying the bunny off to his room. Cross was going to trap Dust in bed for a while, to pamper him and help keep the smaller from drowning in his thoughts.

They all could tell that Dust hadn’t slept the night before, the bags under his sockets were darker than usual, and Dust normally was never up as early as he was… So they came to the clear conclusion that he hadn’t slept… So Cross decided that it was time to trap Dust in bed and seduce him into sleeping for a while. It’d be a nice way to spend the rest of the morning and part of the afternoon.
