Chapter Text
"Robbie! Can you grab the diaper bag? We're going to be late to the Wedding!" Viola shouted, quickly moving and disposing the soiled diaper from her newborn as she tried to consol the red-faced screaming infant. "Shhhhhhh, shhhhhh. It's ok." She sighed as she buckled her child into the car-seat. Her cries have stifled into small hiccups, tears rolling down her rosy cheeks, her lower lip jutting out into a pout. How something so cute could produce something so putrid was one of the world's biggest mysteries to Viola, she shuddered as she thought about the mess of the diaper she had just dealt with.
As she stood, she was suddenly whisked into an embrace. Her heart stopped at the sudden invasion but as she saw her husband with the diaper bag in arm and her in another, a loud giggle erupted from her. "You almost scared me half to death!" she chuckled.
"Well don't be dropping dead on me, I need my two beautiful gals me with 'til I'm old and grey." A dimple appeared on his right cheek as he gave Viola a smile, his bright green eyes with blue and brown flecks in them fixated on her. "Plus, how would I explain that to Steven. I took his best friend in the whole word and spooked her to death, on his wedding day no less!" He dipped her down, one arm behind her back. "That just won't do" Robbie swooped her back onto her feet after a peck on the lips. "Now let's getting going! Last one to the car has to change the rotten egg!" Robbie grabbed his now smiling daughter's car seat and ran as fast as he could towards the door without shaking her. "No fair, I just gave birth! And I changed her last!" Screamed Viola as she raced after him, moving with a bit of a waddle but laughing the whole way.
Robbie's hand slammed onto the car, an airy chuckle escaping his lips. Looking behind him, he watched as Viola waddled down the concrete steps on their house. He immediately moved and offered her his hand and helped her down as he watched her face turn into a pout. He saw the immediate resemblance that his daughter held to his wife. Including the stoney blue eyes that seemed to penetrate through his soul and make him crumble and fall to his knees. "That's no fair, you know you can't use those eyes on me." He laced his fingers through hers as he walked her slowly to the car. "And it's no fair that you can run without peeing yourself, but here we are." She batted her lashes at him with a mischievous glint in her eyes. "Fine! I guess I'll change the next stink bomb, but it better not be a blowout!" Robbie's face scrunched up in disgust. "I have had enough of that for a lifetime.". Viola gave a smile of satisfaction and soothed out her Grooms-woman dress, getting into the backseat and strapping her daughter in. Robbie jumped into the driver's seat, and they began their drive.
The sound of the car driving slowly lulled both Viola and her daughter to sleep, her head slightly sloped to the side as the lack of sleep finally got to her. Her daughters fist tightly closed around her mother's index finger and her other fist in her mouth, drool pooling down her tiny arm. A small bump in the road made the car jump a bit, waking Viola from her slumber. She pressed a finger to the corner of her eye, being careful to not mess up her makeup that had spent so long trying to perfect. Looking into the rear-view mirror, she locked eyes with Robbie. He gave her a smile and reached his hand back to lay on her knee and gave it a squeeze.
"Hey slee-" Robbie was cut off as a loud crunch of metal cut through the air. The car jerked and slid into the side of the road. Viola slammed forward, going face first into the seat in front of her, blood immediately running down her face. She could feel that her nose was instantly broken. The world was blurred as she reached for her infant daughter. "Robbie, Robbie!" she cried out as she took the baby out of the car seat. Through her blurred vision, she could see the glass that was spread all throughout the car. Pain was blooming in every area of her body but the adrenaline rushing through her veins and her crying daughter pushed her to unbuckle and open the car door, exiting onto the grass.
Viola felt a hand touch her shoulder. "Oh my god, are you ok?". Viola looked up, vision still a bit blurred but could make out the face of a woman. Her child was crying and squirming in her arms. "M-my husband, where is he?" Viola gasped. She could still feel the blood rushing from her nose but the only thought on her mind was Robbie. The women wrapped her arm around Viola and led her a bit away from the car wreckage, she could hear the crunch of the glass with every step she took. "Robbie!" She sobbed; the blood was now rushing into the back of her throat. Her sobs are now coming out as more of a gurgle. She could hear the chatter of the bystanders surrounding the car now, someone was on the phone with the police requesting an ambulance.
Anxiety immediately shot through her, she could feel something was wrong. "Please, please. I need to see if he's ok. I need you to hold her." Viola gently placed her crying daughter in the hands of the women and ran back to the car. Pain was settling in her chest as she saw the crushed in wreckage of the front of the car, a truck was facing the car with a lot less damage. A man was inside the truck, opening his door. She could tell his arm was broke with the way it swayed as he bent over and threw up onto the side of the road. Her body felt so tired as she yanked on the driver side car door, the window had yet to completely shatter but yet the cracks had spider webbed in such a way that it was impossible to see through. The only sign of life was the red blood seeping into the cracks of the glass.
After a few good yanks, the door creaked open loudly. Viola was greeted with the sight of Robbie slumped over, passed out. There were tiny little red cuts all over his body, that she assumed was caused the glass flying around upon impact. She unbuckled him out of his seat and pulled his body out of the front, immediately falling to her knees as she took the impact of the fall to the ground with Robbie cradled in her arms. "No, no, no, no, baby please. Wake up" Viola cried as she gave little pats to his cheek in an effort to stir him awake. Blood was soaking through his dress shirt; she wasn't even sure from what area on his body the blood was coming from. She could hear the police and ambulance sirens now. Glass was piercing her knees, but she couldn't even feel the pain as she closed her eyes and clutched Robbie while sobbing.
It wasn't until the paramedic had grabbed her shoulders, that she opened her eyes and looked at Robbie again. His eyes were now dull but staring at her. There was no more life behind them. The worst part was that she couldn't even see the green of his eyes anymore; in fact, she couldn't see any more color anymore. It was all shades of grey. The blood now appeared almost black against the light grey of his shirt and speckled against his almost white skin.
It was only then that she knew he was truly gone. There was no bringing him back. Viola let out a guttural scream cry as she sat on her knees, hands clutching her chest as the paramedics had put Robbie on the gurney. Her throat was now scratchy and gurgling as the blood sank down into her throat once more as she screamed. Her tears now mixing with all of the blood coating her face. The paramedic pulled her away from the broken glass and concrete and onto a gurney as well. She could hear him asking her questions, if she was ok, but she couldn't bring herself to respond with anything but more tears and gasping. She could feel all of the pain across her body, her bloody knees, her broken nose, her likely whiplash but it was nothing compared to the pain in her chest.
Her world was now grey.
