The Best Proposal

Summary:

"Why don't we just get married already, so we wouldn't have to part ways here..," Kobayashi said under her breath as she unbuckled her seat belt.

"Kobayashi sensei... Did you—did you just propose to me?!" Shiratori said in disbelief.

Work Text:

It's been a while since Shiratori finally met the woman of his destiny. At first, there were some obstacles in their relationship that he had to face, but now all that's left is just their happy ever after.

Ever since he began dating Kobayashi, Shiratori Ninzaburo's daily routine was as follows:

  • Pick up Kobayashi and drop her off at school in the morning
  • Eat the bento that Kobayashi made with love during lunch break
  • Drive Kobayashi back to home in the evening.

At least, that's how he planned it to be. Unfortunately, things don't always go as he wanted. Sometimes he had to work overtime, other times he needed to leave for work early, not to mention when he had to leave the city because work. To Shiratori, all that time spent without Kobayashi was a waste of time, and he hated it.

"What should I do to have more time with Kobayashi sensei?" Shiratori thought to himself. The word 'marriage' suddenly crossed his mind.

The thought of him marrying Kobayashi alone was enough to make him blush. Imagine how beautiful Kobayashi would look in wedding dress standing next to him, wake up every morning with her in his embrace, their little happy family with a daughter who looks like her, and she would give him a sakura bracelet made of straw wrappers like her mother did—just thinking about it made him smile. To make his dream come true he needed to devise a plan.

"I'm gonna take her to fine dining in that fancy French restaurant. Under the brilliant night sky, I'll get down on one knee and pop that pretty question. She'd love such a romantic proposal!"

The image of Kobayashi wearing a beautiful dress, illuminated by the moonlight, with a shiny diamond ring on her ring finger—imagine how dazzling she would look like!

Shiratori started preparing all the things needed for his grand proposal. From booking the restaurant, buying the perfect dress, booking the makeup appointment, making sure Kobayashi doesn't have any other plan on that date, to the most important thing—buying the engagement ring. With the help of his sister and his female colleagues, he managed to get it all done on time.

It was D-day, he picked up Kobayashi from their arranged meeting place to the French restaurant.

"Shiratori-san..."

"Yeah?"

"Pardon me, but I think you need to stop looking at my direction and focus on the road instead..."

Shiratori chuckled a bit, "Sorry, I can't help but had my eyes glued on you because you look so beautiful tonight."

"It all thanks to you though, for dolling me up like this," said Kobayashi as she covered her blushing cheeks.

Soon as they reached the restaurant, things started to go as he planned. He went full gentleman mode by pampering her the entire time. Holding the ring box in his pocket, as he finally about to get on one knee, suddenly there's a sound of someone screaming in the restaurant.

Everyone panicked, and as a police he immediately checked what just happened. There he saw a familiar small boy, telling the other customer to not touch the victim carelessly.

"Conan-kun? What are you doing here?"

"Kobayashi sensei? And Inspector Shiratori too? Well, Uncle Kogoro supposed to meet his client here tonight, so I tag along with Ran, but suddenly things happened to his client as you can see. How about you sensei? You look... different?"

"Uhm, we just had a date, you know... But since this restaurant suddenly turned into a crime scene, I guess our date just ended here. Shiratori-san needs to work on this case, right?"

She was right—he had to process the scene, even though he wasn't on duty. So all the work he had put in over the past few weeks went in vain, just before he proposed to her. Knew there's nothing romantic from proposing to someone in a crime scene, he called a cab to take Kobayashi home.

Just because he failed once, didn't mean Shiratori will give up easily on proposing his dream girl. Since the last time they went to that fancy French restaurant it had turned into a crime scene, he thought it wouldn't be a good idea to take her there again in near time.

"How about I take her to Tropical Land, enjoy romantic rides like carousel and ferris wheel, and then when the fireworks lit up I propose to her in front of the castle... Won't that make her feel like she's a princess from a fairytale kingdom? She loves such a romantic love story, of course she'd love it!"

He imagined her happy face after riding all the attractions at Tropical Land, completed with her surprised face as he got down on one knee and pull out the ring—he's getting more impatient to propose her.

After confirming with Kobayashi's schedule, he set a date for both of them to go to Tropical Land.

As he imagined, Kobayashi had the time of her life enjoying every ride they took. According to his plan, after watching the beautiful night sky from ferris wheel, they're going to ride carousel first before going to the front of the castle. And then when the fireworks light up he will propose to her.

Unfortunately, he had to accept the fact that once again things don't go as he planned. As they rode carousel, it started raining cats and dogs outside. No matter how long he waited, the rain didn't seem like it would end anytime soon. It's getting late and Kobayashi looked tired already, which was very natural for someone who spent an entire day in amusement park.

He drove her home, and the date ended just like that.

Summer holiday had ended and the school has just begun. Shiratori missed his chances to propose his girlfriend, and now that Kobayashi got busier they would hardly have any chance to go out on a date.

"Hello Shiratori-san," Kobayashi reached out to him by phone.

"Yeah, what's the matter?"

"Sorry but I guess you don't have to drive me home tonight since I'll finish work very late."

"Isn't that even more reason why I should drive you home? It'd be dangerous if you go home alone late at night."

"But didn't you say you off work early today? You must be tired after working all day, you should get some rest."

"What if I told you that I get more restless to think that you have to go home alone?"

"You don't have to worry, I can take a cab..."

"But I wanted to see your face though..."

"... Fine then, I'll call you when I've finished my work tonight."

"Okay, I'll bring you dinner as well."

"Thanks. See you later at night, Shiratori-san."

"See you later, Kobayashi sensei."

It's 9.30 PM, Shiratori had been waiting for an hour until Kobayashi finally get in his car, and he drove her home. They had a nice conversation before it ended cause she fell asleep. It's only 30 minutes ride from Teitan Elementary School to her home. Even though they've arrived since 15 minutes ago, he couldn't bring himself to wake her up.

"Look at her sleeping so soundly! How come she looks so beautiful even when she sleeps..," Shiratori thought to himself as he gently brushed a strand of hair from her face.

2 hours later she finally woke up on her own.

"How long have I been asleep?! Why didn't you wake me up? I'm so sorry for making you wait too long tonight...!" Kobayashi said in panic.

"No, it's okay. I told you I wanted to see your face, right? I did exactly what I wanted to do, so don't feel bad..."

"But it's too much to wait until I wake up on my own, you should wake me up after a few minutes. Look, it's past midnight already, you must be tired waiting for me!"

"Not really, you look more tired Kobayashi sensei. Hurry up get inside your house and have a good night sleep tonight," said Shiratori, followed with Kobayashi nodding.

"With all the time we spent together today, it's too bad I didn't get to talk much with Shiratori-san. Why don't we just get married already, so we wouldn't have to part ways here..," Kobayashi said under her breath as she unbuckled her seat belt.

"Kobayashi sensei... Did you– Did you just propose to me?!" said Shiratori in disbelief.

Surprised what supposed to be her inner monologue had been heard by the person in front of her, Kobayashi froze for a moment. Then, she snatched the sakura band made of straw wrapper from her drink, and turned it into a ring.

"Shiratori-san, I want to spend my whole life with you, so let's get married!" Kobayashi put the paper ring on his finger, leaving him at a loss for words.

"Kobayashi sensei, I've been planning to propose to you this whole time. From asking you out for a date at that French restaurant, to Tropical Land—I've planned a grand proposal for you but somehow it's always failed. I thought it's a sign for me to take things slowly, but now I'm glad to know that you feel the same... I know it's a bit late, but let me make things even," Shiratori said as he pulled out the ring box and opened it.

"From the moment I met you I knew you're my destiny. I promise that I won't make you regret wishing to spend your whole life with me. So, let me ask you—Kobayashi Sumiko, will you marry me?"

Kobayashi nodded as Shiratori put the diamond ring onto her finger, and the two shared a warm embrace.

"Hold on!" Kobayashi said as she pulled away from the hug.

"Since it's past midnight, the day has changed and—"

Shiratori cut in, "Today is our anniversary, and you're proposing to me on our anniversary! All this time I've planning to make the best proposal for you, who knew you'd beat me to it."

Kobayashi chuckled a bit, "I guess I'm sorry for making such a hasty proposal."

"That's fine. It's the best proposal I could ever get, even much better than the one I had planned before."

At the end of the day, what mattered the most to Shiratori was that he's finally one step closer to tying the knot with Kobayashi.

This is the first time I write a story and posted it online. English isn't my first language, so I apologize for any grammatical errors or any other mistake. I simply write it because I love this underrated ship so much, and I hope this could come across fellow ShiraKoba shipper.
