Work Text:
As much as Momo hated parties and as much as she wanted to be back at her apartment with her dogs, she was actually having a good time. The red wine may have contributed a fairly large portion to her staying for so long, but she believed that counted for something.
She thought it was going to be another one of Sana’s usual parties. Sana was known for being outgoing and always having something to do on the weekends that wasn’t just staying at home.
Momo got used to the drunk texts at 3am from her best friend, lights and loud music blaring behind her in a shaky video. She expected this party to be the same.
Thankfully, Sana knew Momo almost better than she knew herself. It was relaxing and conversational, but there wasn’t any pressure for Momo to come out of her shell any faster than she was ready.
Momo made a few friends as her wine gave her more courage. The music wouldn’t have been her first option, but it did fit the almost sophisticated and chill ambience that the party host had set up.
Momo was on her fourth glass of wine, only just holding onto the words one of her new friends was saying to her. She was trying to pay attention and be present, but Sana was standing in the kitchen in her line of sight.
They had lived together for 13 years now and seeing Sana all dolled up for an outing wasn’t anything new. Momo had seen every side of Sana. They’d been through every major life event together and seen the best and worst of each other.
As Momo struggled to listen to her new friend, she got tunnel vision. The music the host put on was suddenly very jazzy and romantic. The low lights in the kitchen shrouded Sana in a surreal glow.
Sana decided on lighter makeup for the party. She told Momo that she wanted to go for a more natural look. For some reason though, she looked otherworldly. Momo felt like she was experiencing one of those moments that a character in her romance movies goes through. She felt like the main lead suddenly realizing that his best friend of a decade is actually his true love.
Momo gave up on attempting to focus on the conversation she was supposed to be a part of. She decided that Sana, seemingly speaking in slow motion, was more important. She decided that the ghost of a smile on Sana’s lips as she took a sip of her wine and her beautifully defined features as she tucked her hair behind her ear were more deserving of her attention.
Momo could have stared at Sana for the rest of the party and she would have if Sana didn’t finish her conversation and move into the living room to pick Momo up so they could leave.

Sana was always a good friend and she knew when it was time for Momo to go home. Even if she wasn’t ready to leave, she knew that Momo wouldn’t fare well in the morning if they stayed.
The walk back home was slow and careful so Momo didn’t trip and fall. The tunnel vision from the wine was doing its job and as much as she knew she needed to focus on the sidewalk and all the little cracks, she just wanted to watch Sana.
“Maybe we should have gotten you out of there a little earlier,” Sana remarked in a teasing tone. She held tightly to Momo’s arm, not wanting her to take a dive in the middle of the sidewalk.
Momo just grinned, her gaze focused on the bridge of Sana’s nose. “I’m fine. I just need some bed,” she slurred as she continued to look at Sana.
Sana giggled and shook her head as she continued to guide them. Drunk Momo was always a fun sight even if it ended up with a nasty hangover each morning after.
As Momo stumbled beside Sana, she kept her eyes locked on her best friend. The moon was just a sliver, but it provided enough light to highlight every detail on Sana’s face.
Momo had seen that face for 13 years, but she realized that she’d never really taken a good look at it. She realized that she’d never taken the time really examine and study Sana’s features – and to Momo’s drunken thoughts, that was a damn shame.
Suddenly, Momo stopped. She swayed a little before she balanced herself out and spun Sana around to face her. Momo’s eyes were only half open, but she could see all the beautiful details of her best friend she'd somehow missed. “You are very beautiful.”
Sana’s eyebrow raised in amusement and confusion as she let Momo inspect her face. “Thank you. You are too,” she said with a smile.
“No. I really mean it. You’re beautiful. Like… the kind of beautiful that deserves to be kissed every morning and every night and all throughout the day.” Momo’s words spilled out of her as easily as she poured those glasses of wine.
In a change of roles, Sana was stunned. Momo was never one for being emotional and soft, so it was a relatively new experience. She stood quietly as Momo continued to speak, her words slightly slurred.
“It’s been 13 years. Can you believe that?” Momo put her hands on her hips and shook her head in disbelief. “It’s been 13 years and I’m just now realizing how beautiful you are.”
“You really must have had a lot to drink,” Sana said softly. Momo’s thankfully too drunk to notice that softening of Sana’s voice. If she were sober, Momo would have noticed that Sana was getting shy.
Momo shook her head, let it drop against her chest, then nodded. “I did. I did have a lot of wine,” she replied with a grin, “but I am very honest.”
There was a silence that followed and neither of them made any effort to fill in the quiet space. Sana took the few seconds to notice how close Momo was standing and the slight pressure of the tips of her shoes pressing against Momo’s.
“Sana,” Momo mumbled as she broke the silence, “I think that even if I didn’t have lotsa wine, I would still say the same thing.”
Sana didn’t respond. She wasn’t sure she could and even if she knew how, she was sure that it wouldn’t come out correctly.
“I think that it just took the wine and the music – which was really damn good, by the way – and the uhm the kitchen lights for me to realize all of that.”
Sana could feel the heat as it crept up her spine, spread up her neck and into her cheeks. If Momo was sober, she would have made a jab at Sana’s reddening cheeks.
“I love you, you know?” Momo blinked a few times to refocus her eyes as she leaned in to get a better look at Sana.
“I love you too, Momo,” Sana spoke softly as she let Momo lean in. She could feel the heat from the wine radiating off of Momo’s body and for some odd reason, she really wanted to hold her.
“I know that, but I mean that I love you. Like really love you. Not just- not just in the friendly way we always say it.” Momo leaned even closer and Sana could smell the lingering scent of merlot on her lips.
Sana’s heart was quickly catching up with her head as Momo stared at her, those big brown eyes she’d gotten so used to seeing every day looking into her own. She knew that it was most likely the wine talking, but a part of Sana didn’t care as she wrapped her arms around Momo’s waist.
They had cuddled and hugged each other before, but this feeling was new. It shot a spark through Sana’s entire body and she felt like she’d been jumpstarted.
“I don’t-“ Sana started, her voice a whisper as she leaned in to rest her forehead against Momo’s, “You won’t remember this.”
“My brain might not remember it, but my body certainly will,” Momo whispered back. She licked her lips, so close that she could nearly feel Sana’s.
Whether it was the wine or the kitchen lights and the music, Momo decided that even if she couldn’t remember a single thing in the morning, she’d regret the past 13 years if she didn’t kiss Sana.
Her lips were as soft as they looked and despite the wine and whiskey that Sana had begrudgingly sipped on, there was still a hint of her peach lip gloss.
Momo felt like she was floating on a cloud as her lips moved against Sana’s. It was everything she didn’t know she needed and more. With each passing second, she realized that she’d never want to forget the taste of peach lip gloss.
