I Wasn't Afraid Before This

Summary:

Suzu, Koharu, and Hisame were having a sleepover. Pretty simple. Until they watch a movie and suddenly Suzu feels anxiety over telling them something when she hadn't before

Work Text:

The older you got, the less it seemed you got to hang out with your friends in the same ways. So, Suzu was quite enthusiastic to have arranged a sleepover between her, Hisame, and Koharu. Now due to the limitations of two of them living in the school dorms, they did end up having to do it at Koharu's house.

Suzu and Hisame arrived together. Koharu let them in and brought them to her room. They had been over before, but never for an overnight stay.

"So, what are we going to do to pass the time?" Hisame questioned.

"No idea what we can do. I don't have much." Koharu replied.

"Wanna watch a movie or something?" Suzu suggested. "That's easy to start. Do you have any games or things around?"

"Sakura might have some but I don't."

"Why don't we start with a movie then." Hisame said.

They made their way down to the living room and turned on the TV. Koharu searched through the programs available, looking for anything that they might like. Suzu was offering commentary over most of the programs, but Koharu was ignoring it.

Eventually they settled on some new movie that had finally made its way to regular channels. No one was quite sure what it was about but figured there were no other options. They had been searching for too long as it was.

The three girls fell into silence and watched the movie. They made a few comments here and there but overall stayed silent.

They hadn't quite expected what the movie ended up being about. It showed them a story of a trans girl trying to fit in in a new school while trying to leave her past behind. There was a lot of drama but the movie ended with a happy ending.

As the movie ended, the three looked at each other for a bit.

"That was certainly a movie." Hisame commented.

"Surprised so many people were talking about it. Doesn't seem like the type of thing most of them would want to watch." Koharu agreed.

"But, it was a pretty good movie, right?" Suzu asked.

Hopefully unbeknownst to the other two, Suzu was feeling quite anxious over it all. She was like that girl. And now her best friends were discussing how they felt about such a thing. Of course it was quite anxiety inducing to think about.

"It wasn't bad." Hisame said.

"Seems a bit overly dramatic." Koharu said.

"It didn't seem that way. It seemed pretty reasonable." Suzu replied.

"To each their own." Koharu shrugged. "They wanted too much dramatic effect to some of those scenes."

Suzu just nodded along. Perhaps it was best to just stay quiet? Though, she had been wanting to tell them she was trans. Was it a bad idea? It was just a movie. Their opinions about it didn't mean much. They hadn't really said anything wrong. Nothing about the main character herself.

It was still making her heart race at the thought that she might be rejected.

They moved on from the movies. Koharu managed to dig up an old board game hidden in the cabinets under the TV. They set it up and after a bit of a struggle to understand the rules, they began to play it.

Suzu still couldn't get anything from earlier out of her mind. She tried to push it away and act normal, but it was hard. She wasn't sure if Koharu and Hisame noticed something was up with her, but she couldn't push that away either.

She should probably just say something but it was scary. Now that she was doubting how this was going to go, she was afraid. Before, it had been something she was just waiting for the right time to do. Now it was much more than that.

But she couldn't hide it forever. Something was bound to happen. Especially if she was going to keep feeling like this until she said something. Maybe she did just need to bite the bullet and tell them? Even if it was scary.

"Um... can... I tell you guys something?" Suzu hesitantly drew attention to herself.

Hisame and Koharu looked at her.

"Something wrong?" Hisame asked.

"N-no. I just... there's something I've been... wanting to tell you." Suzu mumbled.

"What is it?" Koharu questioned.

Suzu took in a deep breath. This was it. She could do this. She had to. The longer she put it off the worse these thoughts were going to get.

"I... um... I'm trans."

She braced herself for the responses, looking at the ground. She didn't know if she could handle seeing their reactions right now. She just wanted this to be over with...

"You're... trans?" Koharu was the first to speak. "What kind are you talking about?"

"Trans girl..." Suzu whispered. She still didn't dare look up.

"Oh. Well, that's fine. It doesn't matter."

"Yeah. Why are you so afraid?" Hisame added on.

Suzu slowly lifted her head. "I... just got nervous."

"We're not going to abandon you for something like that." Hisame stated. "Come on. You know us better than that, Suzu-san."

"R-right... sorry. My thoughts just got the best of me..." Suzu awkwardly laughed.

"Is there anything else?" Koharu asked.

Suzu shook her head. "No. It was just that..."

"Then, shall we continue the game?"

"S-sure."
