Chapter 1: Long Live the Queen

Chapter Text

There stands a kingdom that was majestic as it was mighty, filled to the brim with beauty of all sorts. This land was called Superbia, ruled by a benevolent king with an intelligent queen by his side.

Their names were Lucifer and Lilith, a couple though bound by an arranged matrimony, loved each other deeply. However, they soon would be separated by dark forces.

One night during the King's banquet, he was entertaining his guests, dignitaries, and ambassadors from all over the world and close allies with his kingdom. He was laughing and drinking without an entire care. Completely unaware of what was to occur.

At that moment, a guard burst through the massive doors, disrupting the festive atmosphere. The guard had a grim expression on his face, citing Lucifer's curiosity. “What is it? What brings you here that you must interrupt my banquet?”

“It is the Queen, your majesty, she has been murdered!” The guard panted as he told him the news.

Just like that, Lucifer’s once calm and serene expression was overtaken by pure rage and grief.

“WHO KILLED MY WIFE, THEY SHALL SUFFER!!!!!”

Even though Lucifer felt great rage at Lilith’s death, he also felt great despair. He went to the private chamber that he shared with Lilith, who lay on the bed, stabbed multiple times. He fell to his knees and sobbed. It was an arranged marriage, but they loved each other, and they had a daughter named Charlotte, but everyone called her Charlie.

After that, Lucifer entered a year of mourning, and his advisor Alastor ran everything. Lucifer was like a ghost who wandered the hallway holding his daughter, since they still hadn’t found the murderer.

One day, Alastor had had enough of the king’s moping and decided to fix it. “He can’t mope like this all the time, our King needs a bride, and Charlie needs a mother. He also needs someone who will bear him another child in case something happens to the Princess. Announce the kingdom that anyone who can bear a child, male or female, shall be entered in a contest to be the new Queen.”

Alastor didn’t care if Lucifer went back to running things. Alastor liked having power, but finding a new bride would keep the King busy.

The guards talked, they heard of a man of great beauty and grace who can bear children. His name is Adam. They searched the city and found Adam, he was as beautiful as rumors said he was. They added Adam’s name to the list of contestants for who would be the next Queen.

Adam was preparing dinner for his little sister and himself when his mother came bursting through the doors. “Adam!”

Adam spun around, “Mother? What is the matter!? “

Sera came up to him, hugging him tightly. “Thank goodness they haven’t taken you yet. Go get your sister, grab all your essentials. We are leaving the kingdom!” Adam, shocked, questioned his mother. “What, why on Earth are we leaving!?”

So, she told her son why. “It’s the king's advisor, Alastor, who has made a decree. The king is searching for the next queen, and all eligible young maidens, no matter the gender, must report to the palace for the king to make his choice.

Adam didn’t see what she was so worried about.  “So?” “So!? Adam, you have been blessed with the parts that make both a man and a woman. Not only that, but you are possibly the most beautiful person in all the land. Rivaling that of the late Queen.”

“Mother, we mustn’t speak so ill of her so soon,” Adam said as he frowned at his mother. “I am not speaking Ill, I am only speaking facts.”

She sighed, placing a tender hand on his cheek. Adam involuntarily leaned against it, he always loved it when his mother did that. “I can not lose you to the king or his advisor, especially Alastor; the palace isn’t safe for our kind.”

They’re kind of course being Hebrew. They were a part of the Jewish community in their kingdom. While Sera knew their king didn’t mind, Alastor would skin them all if he could.

“Decree be damned we are leaving to where it is safe. And that is that, now go help your sister.”

Adam could only nod at his mother. “…Yes, mother.”

Later that evening, the small family hurriedly made their way through the streets, their bags lugged over their shoulders. They were close to the main city’s entrance. Freedom was right there within reach as Sera felt her heart lightened.

That was when they were stopped by the royal guard.

Adam looked sadly at his mother and sister, knowing what he had to do. Adam walked towards the royal guard. “I was told anyone who can bear children must report to the palace for some sort of contest.”

He didn’t want his mother or sister to get into trouble. Maybe if he were lucky, the king wouldn’t be interested in him and let him go. “My name is Adam.”

The royal guard looked at Adam in amazement. They heard some other guards talk of a man who lived in the city named Adam, whose beauty rivaled that of the late Queen, and looking at him, they could tell they weren’t exaggerating.

One of the guards nodded, “Of course, we will escort you to the royal palace.”

Adam looked at his mother while offering a silent prayer as he walked off with the guards. Once at the place, he was inspected to show he had the parts of both a man and a woman. He was also still a virgin.

Adam saw other women and a couple of men like him. The next day, Lucifer couldn’t believe what Alastor told him. He was to pick a bride to be his Queen.

He looked at the choices. They were lovely, but they didn’t stand out to him. That was until he saw a man of radiant beauty amongst them.

His eyes were a brilliant shade of gold, his short hair a lovely shade of brown. He was dressed in a gown of dark blue. He saw the man pick up a stringed instrument that he started to play as he sang.

He was beautiful and sang, everyone saw a handsome man with blonde hair and piercing blue eyes. Even though he was short, he had a commanding presence. He knelt in front of the man, Adam, to hear him sing.

When Adam was done singing, he opened his eyes, and he felt his heart flutter at this handsome man. He turned to a nearby assistant and grabbed their attention. “Send the others home, I want to spend the day with this young man.”

He called out loud enough so that everyone heard him. Including Adam.

Adam decided not to point out that he wasn’t that much younger than this man. It seemed foolish to say that to the King, who was a widower and had a child. He bowed to him respectfully as he made his way closer to him.

“My King, I hope my singing pleased you.” Lucifer smiled upon him. “It did, your voice is lovely.” “Thank you.” He said appreciatively.

Adam held out his hand to Lucifer, and when their fingers touched, they could feel an attraction. Lucifer knew that he was holding the hand of his future Queen. “I would like to like to see the famous royal garden if you don’t mind. I heard of its great beauty.” Adam asked the king, and he agreed.

“Of course.”

Lucifer was pleased to see that Adam was quite tall when he stood up. In spite of the fact that he was short, Lucifer was attracted to a person who was quite a bit taller than him. As they walked towards the garden, they did t realize that they were still holding hands.

Once Adam realized he had blushed, and tried to release his hand from Lucifer’s. Come to find out, despite his stature, the king was quite strong and had a very tight grip. So, Adam simply accepted his fate and continued to stroll in the garden with the king by his side.

Just as Adam imagined, and more, it was possibly the most extravagant, most remarkable place not only in the kingdom but on Earth. Every single plant shone under the burning sun. Not a single plant was molting or rotten.

However, the true gem that caught his eye was that of a flower. Its stem and petals are shaped like a rose, minus the thorns, but golden. Adam couldn’t help but kneel to it, dragging the king down with him.

Lucifer didn’t mind, h,e found Adam’s wonder at his garden enchanting. “What is this called my king? I’ve never seen a plant like this before.”

“That is because it grows only in the garden. My father created this special flower as a gift for my mother.” The king regaled the beautiful man as he thought back to his parents.

“Your father must have loved her quite much.” Lucifer smiled, “He did. He told me that he gave it to her because it represented how his life lit up with her in it.” Adam couldn’t help but think highly of the late King Theodore. “He sounded like a true romantic and gentleman.”

Lucifer nodded, a look of memories spreading on his face. “He was, he told me that when a person finds their other half, they must do whatever it takes to let that person know how special they are to them. No matter how many years pass.”

As he said this, he couldn’t help but stare at the beauty before him. He had only known him for a short time, but he felt his heart soar in a way it hadn’t since…since she was still alive.

However, he had to ask a simple question first before he made a decision.

“Adam?”

Said man turned his attention away from the flower and again back to Lucifer. “Yes, my king?” “Do you like children? That is, do you wish to have any of your own?” It took Adam a moment, but eventually he did answer honestly.

“…Yes, actually in fact I’ve always wanted a house full of them with the man I truly loved.”

Lucifer couldn’t help but let his heart soar. “Then that is all that I need to know.” He takes his second hand and rises. “Adam, I may not have known you for long, but I feel it in my heart that you are the one.”

Adam’s eyebrows furrowed. The one? What one?

Lucifer craned his head up and yelled at the top of his lungs. “GUARDS!”

Two guards move forward from their positions and straight to their king. Adam was worried that he had offended his king, and it would be off to the chopping block. However, that would not be the case at all.

Lucifer looked at them with a smile and a joyful expression plastered on his face as he told them. “Find Alastor and tell him to make a decree. Let it be known throughout the land that I have finally found my queen.”
