Work Text:
They were alone. Finally, alone. after all these grueling days. They could just stand and not fear for their life. But now, they feared for a different reason. Because only one could remain. And there were two. Both had not thought they would come to this point. So, they had not thought about the end. And what they had to do. What they needed to do. What they couldn’t do.
Guilt began tearing at him. He looked down at his hands, which were straining to go to his sheath. Trembling, as he pulled out his knife. She fell to her knees. Not because she had understood what had to happen now. Her body simply let out. She let out a breath that rattled against his mind. Rattled against his soul. He turned towards her and grabbed her throat. His knife sliding easily against her throat. The only sound he could hear was the screaming of his mind. And the silence of the world. Could almost hear the commentator's voice dropping. Could hear the betrayal in her eyes. Could sense that she remembered why they were here. To kill. And there was only one last kill to be made. It should be easy. Just slide it against her throat as he had done the others. But with them, he had seen danger, a threat. With her. He saw the only real happiness he had seen in a while.
She looked in his eyes. He looked in her eyes.
A noise escaped the silence.
“I don’t want to die.”
“I don’t want to die.”
And the last noise they were ever going to hear escaped.
A knife marked the world with more blood.
I walked out of there.
And never since have I been able to hear the true beauty of the world.
