Pouring Rain and Kissing on the Brain

Summary:

Juliana manages to avoid having to battle Nemona out in a storm, then worries if Nemona is really happy to have her as her girlfriend, and talks to her about it.

Work Text:

Sitting in bed, Juliana stared out her dorm room window at the rain hitting the pavement. The sky was grey as far as the eye could see, thunder rumbling in the distance. The clouds had been hiding the sun all day, and now a storm was rolling in. That was more than enough excuse to stay inside all day—for most people, anyway.

"Come on, Juli, let's go battle!" Nemona was as enthusiastic as ever. Juliana wondered if they were even seeing the same thing out the window.

"Nemo, there's a storm coming in."

"Not every battle's in clear weather!"

At this rate, she might try to drag Juliana outside. Juliana sometimes thought that Pokemon battles were Nemona's most basic need. Once she got the urge to battle, it was a matter of when, not if. Juliana did know one way to avoid having to battle her right this instant, though.

"I'm free tomorrow. We can battle as long as you want then."

"Okay! But now I've gotta figure out what to do today."

Juliana sighed, but smiled fondly. It was so like Nemona to say that while alone with her girlfriend, in her girlfriend's dorm room, with nowhere to be all day. Juliana had actually asked her before if she really did enjoy kissing and all that. She did, it just didn't occur to her when she had battling on the brain. On the other hand, kissing Nemona occurred to Juliana all the time, often distractingly so. In fact, as much as she'd like to be doing that right now...

"Do you still have yesterday's homework to do? Let's get that finished."

Nemona pulled her homework out, and soon they were facing each other across a table with papers strewn about. The thunder slowly grew closer as they worked, and the patter of the rain became a persistent drumming, so Juliana drew the curtains to muffle the noise. As always, doing their homework together really meant Nemona helping Juliana. Juliana snuck glances at her as they worked: her usually cheery face was thoughtful and serious, making her look cool and handsome. And kissable. Later.

Finally, they were both done (though it would've taken Juliana far longer on her own), and Juliana flopped onto her bed. The storm had arrived, and she could hear rain splattering furiously on the window, though muted by the thick fabric of the curtains. Nemona was still sitting at the table, having just finished putting away her things.

"Hey, Nemo?"

"Yeah?" She looked over at Juliana. Nemona's expression was neutral, maybe mildly curious. Now that they really had nothing they needed to do, shouldn't she seem a bit more interested, seeing her girlfriend in bed?

Maybe she actually thinks about things other than kissing girls, unlike you, another part of Juliana's brain helpfully supplied.

"Are you really happy to have someone like me as your girlfriend?"

Nemona frowned. "What do you mean by that?"

Juliana sat up and spread her arms. "I'm short. I'm as curvy as a Cryogonal. I'm only doing well in class because of you. I'm not a genius trainer like people think. I'm not really talented at anything."

"You're brave. You're a hard worker. You figure out how to make up for your weaknesses. You care for your friends. You're a strong trainer because you understand your Pokemon."

Dang, Nemona hadn't even had to pause and think. That was... reassuring. But...

"Okay, and what about this?" She gestured at her body.

Nemona did pause this time, but then shrugged and grinned. "I hadn't really thought about it. Height's not a big deal. I like you for you, Juli."

How could she just say that kind of thing with a straight face? Wait, she was blushing a little. Cute.

"I like y... Ahh! You're making me feel shallow, Nemo!"

"Huh?"

"I like... I like you for you, too!" Juliana felt her cheeks burning. "You're an even harder worker than me, and you're always thinking about how to improve, and you're so nice and helpful, and you're so driven. But you're also tall, and hot, and cute, and soft, and your freckles are adorable, and...!" Juliana made herself stop talking. She brought her knees up, stuffing a pillow between them and her chest. She stuck her face into the pillow to hide her blush, eyes peeking over the top at Nemona.

Nemona's eyes were wide. Then they softened into a smile and she stood up, walking over to Juliana's bed. Leaning over, her fingers gently brushed Juliana's hair back from her ear.

"You're really cute, too. Especially right now." Nemona paused to think for a moment. "Were you worried because you always kiss me first? I'll have to try to be a better girlfriend." She nodded firmly and pushed the pillow down out of the way. Cheeks flushed, her face slowly neared Juliana's. Juliana closed her eyes, and then Nemona's soft lips were pressed against hers. But the kiss lasted only a moment. Nemona gently took the pillow and set it to the side, then sat down in front of Juliana. She patted her thighs and beckoned, arms spread. Juliana scooted forward onto her lap, and Nemona's arms wrapped around her, pulling her tight against herself.

Juliana felt childish, even as she squeezed Nemona in return and the tension in her body melted in the warmth of their hug. But a moment later, Nemona's tongue pushing between her lips reminded her that Nemona didn't see her as a child. She felt her own body growing warmer from within as Nemona kissed her slowly. When their lips finally parted, they shared a blushing smile. One hand left Juliana's back to pet her hair as they gazed into each other's eyes. After a long, silent while, Juliana closed her eyes and hoped for another kiss. She was by no means disappointed.
