Work Text:
MORNING
I woke up around six AM soaking in the surroundings of my bedroom, for once I had actually went home to sleep rather than crashing at my desk, if only because Maya kicked me out of the office. After a quick shower and a slow breakfast I stood at the foot of my bed looking over the evidence I’d accumulated over the previous day: The autopsy report, the shower head used to drown the victim, the text message logs showing growing animosity between the victim and her boyfriend, the written alibi that could clear my client’s name today and.. my badge, whoops how did that get there, let’s just pop that back on…. Looking sharp!

HALFWAY THROUGH MY CROSS EXAMINATION
"As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted, I found Lyla at noon-" "HOLD IT! how are you so sure about the time?" I asked, he pursed his lips at me as he responded, making his greasy eyes squint under his bangs, "I was watching the noontime rerun of the steel samurai, my favorite show-" I put my arm out in front of Maya to discourage her from replying out of turn. "-When I felt the er, urgent need to urinate, yes. that's when I found my poor little sister." he wiped his eyes on his arm and the jury cooed in pity.
"TAKE THAT!" I mashed the autopsy report down in front of the judge, "The autopsy report says that Lyla was drowned around four PM!-" "OBJECTION!" Edgeworth slammed his open palm down on his desk. "We established yesterday that this report is a sloppy mess made by an inexperienced rube!" he smirked, "That is true! but I doubt even a drunk forensic pathologist would mistake noon for four PM!" I barked back. "Irk!" Edgeworth grunted as he slammed his arm in front of him, bending over to glare at me with shadowed eyes. "So then Mr. Wright, why are you suggesting his testified time was so far off?" The judge asked, "Why your honor..?" my vision blurred as I thought through all my options before narrowing it down to three. "He's slow of the mind!" I pointed at him and his face curled in confusion, I heard Maya facepalm as the judge looked down at me with annoyance. "I do not appreciate your sense of humor Mr. Wright. " he said coldly, "The witness may continue with his testimony.
"Thank you, your honor, so then, after taking a moment to compose myself, I followed the wet footprints out the back door where I saw Kyle running away!-" "TAKE THAT!" I pulled out a folded yellow piece of paper and handed it to the judge. "We have a written alibi stating that Kyle Porter was helping his grandmother with her garden two towns away at the time of the murder, he could not have been present as Mr. Moe Lester claims!"
Edgeworth's glare hardened as the judge gasped with the jury, "Then what happened!" the judge exclaimed, I only saw three possible explanations, I had nothing for any, so I simply selected one at random after a deep breath, "LYLA LESTER WAS NEVER MURDERED AT ALL! SHE KILLED HERSELF!" "HA!" Edgeworth's composure broke and he let out a laugh, Maya's head made contact with the desk, "I wanna kill myself.." She grumbled.
"Mr. Wright, this is a murder trial. I will not let you make a mockery of my courtroom." The judge glared down at me "I-" my words caught in my throat, "Sorry.." he huffed before looking back to the witness, "If that is all the buffoonery- " "HOLD IT! Something still smells here! I'd like to request an updated autopsy report! ...Please." I let my finger dip from pointing at the judge. "I hardly think you're in a position to request anythin-" "OBJECTION!" Edgeworth adjusted the sleeve of his overcoat, "Your honor if I may, Mr. Wright, may not be wrong." the judge squinted. "Excuse me?" he asked, "Larry Butz had only been on the job three days at the time of writing the report and he is... prone to stupidity. I would also, for the sake of accuracy, like to request a more professional autopsy report." The judge sighed deeply before lifting his gavel, "You have one day." SMACK!
As we left the courthouse I flagged down Edgeworth, “You gonna request the report?” I asked, “I will yes, I’ll have it faxed to you.” He replied, “Thanks Miles.” I smiled, “Yes.” He ended the conversation by turning away.

SEARCHING FOR FURTHER EVIDENCE AT THE LESTER RESIDENCE
I bent down by the taped outline leaning over the bathtub, “C’mon.. there’s something I’m missing for sure.” I mumbled to myself, “Nick look!” Maya was pointing up at the decorative fish net that hung from the ceiling, “What?” I inquired, “Look at the little plastic starfish hung in it! They are in a pattern, yellow blue yellow blue yellow blue- but here!” “Right where the killer would have had to be..” I interjected, “Yeah! It’s yellow yellow with an empty space! And look!” She bent down and came back to a little blue plastic starfish from next to the toilet. “It must have got knocked down when the killer stood up!” She exclaimed, “…But Kyle Porter is way too short to bump that…” I rubbed my chin in thought, “But who isn’t!?” Maya encouraged with waving hands, “….. Moe!” I looked at her, mouth agape. “We got him.” Maya smiled as she handed me the starfish.

ELEVEN PM
Satisfied with the evidence we had I laid down in bed that night, ready to bring a killer to justice in the morning.

HALFWAY THROUGH MY CROSS EXAMINATION
"As I was saying before I was rudely interrupted, I found Lyla at noon-" "HOLD IT! how are you so sure about the.. time…?" My words stumble towards the end, I feel like I’ve asked that already, he pursed his lips at me as he responded, making his greasy eyes squint under his bangs, "I was watching the noontime rerun of the steel samurai, my favorite show-" I put my arm out in front of Maya to discourage her from replying out of turn while I stared at the ground trying to remember where I’d seen all this before, obviously I’d been in this courtroom a million times but this specific moment, all the details. "-When I felt the er, urgent need to urinate, yes. that's when I found my poor little sister." he wiped his eyes on his arm and the jury cooed in pity.
I shook my head and focused back in "TAKE THAT!" I mashed the autopsy report down in front of the judge, "The autopsy report says that Lyla was drowned around four PM!-" "OBJECTION!" Edgeworth slammed his open palm down on his desk. "We established yesterday that this report is a sloppy mess made by an inexperienced rube!" he smirked, "That is true! but I doubt even a drunk forensic pathologist would mistake noon for four PM!" I pointed at him and his face curled in confusion, I heard Maya facepalm as the judge looked down at me with annoyance. "I do not appreciate your sense of humor Mr. Wright. Edgeworth's glare hardened as the judge gasped with the jury, "Then what happened!" the judge exclaimed, I only saw three possible explanations, WAIT, I DID ALL OF THIS YESTERDAY, WHAT IS GOING ON?? my mind lit up in a split second with a thousand ideas but one stood above all. A do over. “KYLE PORTER DIDN’T KILL LYLA LESTER! MOE LESTER DID!” I pointed at the witness with a confident smile, “WHAT!?” the judge, Edgeworth, Moe and Maya all gasped. “ORDER!” the judge shouted as he hammered his gavel. “What is the meaning of this baseless accusation!?” He shouted at me, “I have the evidence to prove it, your honor!” I thumbed into my pocket for the plastic starfish while I prepared my explanation and… nothing. Uh oh. “Well!?” the judge grew impatient, “Uhhh, I’d like to request a brief recess!” I shot back, “Excuse me!?” He called down to me, “I uh, I left the evidence at home your honor!” “OBJECTION!”
Edgeworth looked as if he could huff steam through his nostrils, “If there is conclusive evidence of my client’s guilt why wasn’t it brought to my attention!? I request an extension so I may consider this ‘forgotten’ evidence!” “SUSTAINED!”
~
AFTER FRANTICALLY RUNNING TO THE LESTER RESIDENCE AND EXPLAINING THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STARFISH TO MAYA
I handed Edgeworth photo copies of the evidence and explained while he stared at me with a sour face, “Gracious of you to finally provide this detail Wright.” He spat before closing the door to the prosecution lobby, “LESTER!” Was the last thing I heard before the door clicked shut. Oof, glad I’m not him.
Tomorrow would be the day, I’ll get him.

THE LESTER RESIDENCE, BEFORE THE TRIAL
I grabbed the starfish after photographing it where it laid and noticed something else as I stepped out… just in case, a trap card.

"So then Mr. Wright, why are you suggesting his testified time was so far off?" The judge asked, not sure what would change if I changed my answer I stuck to the script, "He's slow of the mind!" I pointed at him and his face curled in confusion, I heard Maya facepalm as the judge looked down at me with annoyance. "I do not appreciate your sense of humor Mr. Wright. " he said coldly, "The witness may continue with his testimony.

Moe Lester bared his teeth in shock, “OBJECTION! The witness easily could have knocked that down after finding the body, or at any point before, he lived in his sister’s home after all.” Edgeworth shrugged, “I thought you’d say something like that,” I grabbed my trump card, “That’s why I had more to present. TAKE THAT!” I handed the judge a photo of the tape outline of one of the ‘wet footprints’ with a ruler next to it, “I measured these footprints that Mr. Lester testified about, tell me, what is your shoe size?” “. . .” The judge lowered the photo, “Please tell the court your shoe size Mr. Lester!” “. . . . Thirteen. . . .” “The exact size!” The judge exclaimed, “Kyle,” I turned to Mr. Porter, “Would you toss me one of your shoes?” I asked, “Oh! Yeah, here.” He slipped off one of his vans and threw it at my chest, after slipping it twice I caught it, peering inside despite the smell at the number on the inner heel. “Nines!” The jury gasped and rabbled as I turned it for all to see, taking an opportunity to quip I cleared my throat, “Well Mr. Lester, if the shoe fits-“ “YOU SPIKY PRICK!” Moe breathed heavily after cutting me off, “THAT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MY TIME BEING OFF! THAT’S WHAT WE WERE TALKING ABOUT!” Edgeworth butted in, glaring resentfully at his witness, “I hardly think that matters anymore.”
The judge nodded, “I DIDN’T HURT LYLA I DID NOT! ERAAAH! CURSE THESE CLOWN FEET!!”
~
After he was arrested and taken away for his own trial later, Kyle was found not guilty, I swelled with pride, I’d have to take Maya out for burgers, whether she knew it or not, she had earned us this paycheck.
~
ELEVEN PM
I sighed happily, content with my victory. I let sleep slowly take me on the couch in my office, thanks for the do overs universe, really handy.
~
MORNING
I woke up around six AM soaking in the surroundings of my bedroom, for once I had actually went home to sle- oh oh. Okay, uh, hm. What exactly was I supposed to do now, I sat up in bed, I need to talk to someone smarter than me, someone who might know what’s going on, or if I’m going insane. Maya maybe? She knows about freaky stuff like this, no, she’d probably freak out and try to drag me up to the mountain or something… after sifting through a few more options I land on Edgeworth, he’ll either believe me with our history and try to help, or he’ll think I’m insane and try to get me help, yeah.
~
OUTSIDE THE COURTHOUSE, BEFORE THE TRIAL
I waited outside for Edgeworth, tapping my arm with my fingers, when I saw him approach I stopped him at the door, “Miles I need help.” I said frantically as I grabbed his shoulders, the panic having really set in over the last few hours. He looked me up and down with concern, “Of course Wright, are you alright??” He asked, I took a deep breath, “I’m stuck in a timeloop, I’ve done this trial three times! I keep on waking up this morning after.” He stared at me wide eyed silently, “What did you take Wright?” He asked, “I didn’t take anything! This is real miles!” I shouted. He looked down in thought, “You are clearly unfit to work right now, stay here. I will go in and request postponing, we will go get you a drug test and if you pass I will consider the possibility that you are telling the truth.” He said flatly, “..Fine.” I replied.
~
OUTSIDE THE DOLLAR STORE
As I stood outside my phone pinged,
‘Nick what happened to the trial??’
Oh boy, I forgot to make up an excuse for Maya, whatever I’ll deal with it later, I pop my phone back in my pocket as Edgeworth exits the store with an all purpose drug test.
~
As he stares at the results sitting across from me at the Waffle House he clicks his tongue, “Okay, you’re just crazy.” I hang my head in my hands, “This is real Edgeworth.” I say quietly. “Yes well, I recommend getting help.” And he got up, and left.
I can’t say that was expected, dear god.
~
EIGHT PM
I spent the rest of the day at the park and ended up falling asleep on a bench, wondering what to do.
~
MORNING
I woke up around six AM soaking in the surroundings of my bedroom, for once I had actually went home to sleep rather than crashing at my desk, I sigh deeply as I sit up on the side of my bed, when to my surprise, something new happens, my phone rings, Edgeworth.
‘Phoenix Wright.’
‘Wright. What did you do.’
‘What are you talking about Miles?’
‘Wright, I woke up the same day I went to sleep on!’
‘.... What..?’
‘YOU HAVE DRAGGED ME INTO YOUR “TIMELOOP” YOU IDIOT!’
‘Oh god.. Meet me at waffle house.’
‘WHY WAFF-’
I hung up. Okay great, great! I rubbed my temples. I have somehow made this a thousand times worse.
~
WAFFLE HOUSE, SEVEN TWENTY ONE AM
“How did you loop me into this mess.” Edgeworth glared at me, hunched. “I told you I don’t know! All I did was talk to you about it!” I replied, Edgeworth stared at the table, “We need to find someone who can help, quickly, before we both go mad.” he furrowed in thought for a long time. “Miss Fey. She knows about the occult and such, surely she could tell us something.” I scratched the back of my head, “Yeah.. but what if that get’s her stuck too?” I asked, “Would it not be to our benefit to have someone like her stuck with us to help figure out a solution?” he asked in response, seeming to calm down despite his tone, “I… It would..”
~
OUTSIDE MAYA’S APARTMENT, EIGHT AM
Miles was banging on the door far harder than necessary, “MISS FEY! WRIGHT AND I NEED YOU ASSISTANCE URGENTLY!” after a moment she opened the door and quickly shut it behind her, “Would you stop with the knocking! You’re gonna wake Frannie! What!?” I chimed in now, “We are stuck in a timeloop, I’ve lived this day a good few times now and Edgeworth just got roped in and we don’t know how.” She laughed uproariously, “Oh yeah! How many times have we had this conversation Bill Murray!” she kept laughing, “Only this once, Miss Fey. Wright was afraid to rope you in.” Edgeworth replied calmly and she settled down, “Y-” she snorted, “You’re serious..?” she asked, still grinning, “Maya you literally talk to the dead how are you questioning this?” I asked and her face got serious, “.... I might know someone, I’ll give you her address.”

All Maya’s friend really did was chant some stuff and bathe us in suffocating incense, we were both more than skeptical, We parted ways that night and I went to bed, hoping.

MORNING
I woke up around six AM soaking in the surroundings of my bedroom, for once I had actually went home to sleep rather than crashing at my desk, I sigh deeply as I sit up on the side of my bed, my phone rings, Edgeworth.
‘Still in?’
‘Still in.’
‘Damn, meet me at waffle house we’ll think of something.’
After calling Maya to see if we had roped her in and finding out to my both relief and disappointment that she knew nothing, I headed off.
~
WAFFLE HOUSE, SEVEN TWENTY ONE AM
We sat in silent thought for what felt like hours before Edgeworth had an idea, “What if we don’t sleep?” he asked, “What?” I replied, “We begin the loop again when we sleep, right?” “Right.” “So what if we just don’t, and let today naturally transition into tomorrow around us?” “It could work.”
And we tried it, keeping hyper up on energy drinks and walking the city, keeping each other awake by any means necessary.
~
SUNRISE
“YES! IT WORKED WRIGHT!” Edgeworth gripped my shoulders, “YEAH!” I shouted back in reply. “WE CAN FINALLY MOVE ON! I’M GOING HOME!” And off he took, I smiled, glad it was over, I sat down on a park bench and closed my eyes, now everything can go back to normal.
~
MORNING
I woke up around six AM soaking in the surroundings of my bedroom, for once I had actually went home to sleep rather than crashing at my desk…. Damnit. My phone rang.
‘GOD FUCKING DAMNIT!’
~
WAFFLE HOUSE, SEVEN TWENTY ONE AM
The silence felt even longer than before, Edgeworth looked furious, “. . . . What if we die..?” I suggested, “Hm.” Edgeworth acknowledged, “Probably not the best idea but-“ Edgeworth met my eyes, I raised my eyebrows.
~
THE ROOF OF MY APARTMENT BUILDING
As we stood on the edge I turned to Edgeworth, “Miles?” “Yes?” “What if we just stay dead?” I asked, he fell silent for a long time. “Better than this.” He replied, “I guess.” He took my wrist, and down we went. I felt my nose hit the concrete first.
~
MORNING
I shot up around six AM soaking in a cold sweat as I felt my face, my phone rang.
‘Still alive?’
‘Still alive.’
~
ONE HUNDRED AND THIRTY FOUR LOOPS LATER, EIGHT PM
We sat together on the roof of my apartment complex, Edgeworth had barely bothered to get dressed today, just a button up and some deep red jeans. Not that I have much room to talk, I resigned to wearing a hoodie and shorts a long time ago. As I watched the clouds roll by I said the first word of the evening, "Why was it you?" I asked into the open air, Edgeworth turned his head a little. "Hm?" I bit the inside of my lip, "I know why I went to you, It's because you're smarter than me, but we have told just about everyone by now and you're the only one who got roped in. Why?" he breathed hard through his nose, "I suppose that would depend on the very nature of the loop, why did it start at all?" he asked in return. "And why won't it stop?" I replied, he laid back on the roof, keeping his legs dangling over the edge next to mine. "Did you do anything different? Even think anything you wouldn't normally?"
"Not really, did you?" I asked back, "I do not think so, besides think you were insane-" "You thought I was high first." I laughed, "I did. But after that, I just tried to go about my day, not my problem. People go crazy all the time.." his voice was barely a whisper, "But as the night drew to a close, I felt guilty. Thought about finding you, having you put in a ward myself where they could determine what was wrong with you." I choked on a laugh, "Ha! you care about me!"
"Of course I do. You're the closest thing I have to a real friend." he replied, shifting a little. "What? you hang out with loads of people miles." I turned to him as the sun crept down past the horizon, "For work. I spend my evenings watching a campy television program for children.. and thinking about you. and Larry." "Oh?" "Us playing all together as children. anyway, in short no, nothing too strange. But I didn't start it so I suppose It doesn't matter."
I let silence take hold for a while, "We should go hang out with Larry." I said finally, "Yeah?" Edgeworth replied as he sat up, "Yeah. tomorrow." "You mean today." "Whatever man, you wanna go grab something to eat?" I asked, "Sure," he let out a single laugh, "We could dine and dash, wouldn't matter." I punched him lightly in the arm, "Miles Edgeworth! Are you suggesting we break the law?" I spoke though a stifled laugh, "Fuck it, why not? we'll wake up and it won't matter." "Let's do it then!"
~
WALTER'S COOK SHACK, NINE THIRTY NINE PM
He couldn't do it, something about his reputation and 'What if tonight is the night we wake up tomorrow?'
~
OUTSIDE LARRY’S APARTMENT
We knocked on Larry’s door and waited for him to stumble out, “Oh hey guys! I uh- is this about that bogus report? Sorry again by the way.” He hung his head, “Nah it’s not Larry, we’re blowing off work today, wondering if you wanna join.” I replied. “Oh hell yeah! What are we doing?” He started slipping his shoes on, “Hadn’t thought about that yet…” I replied honestly. “Well hey! Remember when we used to fish with sticks and string together? I could get a couple beers and we could go fish for real! Oh wait- I forgot I keep putting off getting my fishing license…” Edgeworth cleared his throat, “Fuck the license, you only live once, let’s just do it.”
~
THE OLD CREEK
“So,” Larry started, “We haven’t all hung out in a while, what’s been cracking with you guys?” He asked, I laughed to myself and disturbed my line, “We’re stuck in a timeloop.” I said flatly, he laughed, “Yeah right Nick!” He sipped on his bottle, “He’s not lying.” Edgeworth chimed in. Larry laughed harder, “You aren’t gonna get me with this guys I’m not that gullible!” I shared a look with Edgeworth, “Yeah, you caught us..” I said, “We’ll get you next time.”
We spent the rest of the day laughing and joking, getting drunk by the creek, it was nice.
~
MORNING
I woke up around six AM soaking in the surroundings of my bedroom, for once I had actually went home to sleep rather than crashing at my desk, I called up Larry.
‘Yo Nick what’s up?’
‘Had fun fishing with you.’
‘What are you talking about man? we haven’t done that in ages.’
I hung up and laid back down, waiting for Edgeworth’s inevitable call.
~
EVENING, SEVENTY FIVE LOOPS LATER, MY APARTMENT
We tried a few new methods of escape before we truly gave up, leaving the city, leaving the country, a few different drugs, nothing worked. “I think I’m lonely.” Edgeworth said more to himself facing the TV, “I imagine that’s what I’m here for.” I replied as I set down the fruit tray I made. He sighed deeply, “No Wright, you wouldn’t get it. You’ve had flings and partners and all that. Most I’ve had was a one night stand last year.” He popped a grape in his mouth. “OoOoOo do I know him?” I asked, very smoothly might I add, trying to steer him away from a pity party. He rolled his eyes, “That is none of your business.” I groaned, “C’mon miles I won’t judge you! It’s not like I’ll go gossiping about it, and even if I did, no one would remember!” I crossed my legs on the couch. He made a growl-like sound that meant I was breaking him down for sure. “No-” “I will keep bugging you about it until you tell me.” I gave him a smug smile, he closed his eyes and sighed through his nose. “Dick.” He said quietly, “GUMSHOE!? ARE YOU SERIOUS!?”
He flinched and pointed at me, slamming his hand on the coffee table, “YOU SAID NO JUDGEMENT!” He shouted, “I’m not! Just why Gumshoe!?” I shot back. He scoffed, “Why not!? He’s loyal and handsome in a sort of.. scruffy way.” He looked at me like he was waiting for a comeback, “Was it good..?” I asked, “Wright! A gentleman never kisses and tells.” He looked away from me, “So it was bad.” I said, “No!- oh Godamnit.” I laughed at him for a second, “Well, there’s nothing stopping you from going out and getting some dude, can’t imagine it would be hard being, well, you.” I suggested but he waved me off, “No. I learned from my mistake, I don’t like one night stands, I want someone I can come back to. And I’m afraid that’s not possible anymore..” he looked down but I saw realization spread across his face, “Not entirely..” he said to himself, looking over at me up and down, I felt my eyes widen. “It wouldn’t hurt to try would it..?” He asked.
~
A FEW HOURS LATER, THE PARK
It didn’t hurt to try as it turned out, it was great in fact. We hadn’t said much since we left my apartment but Edgeworth cleared his throat to break the silence, “It was good.” He said simply.
~
TWENTY LOOPS LATER, EDGEWORTH’S HOME
It became a pastime after that, we couldn’t seem to keep our hands off of each other. I justified it as keeping the inevitable insanity at bay, I don’t think Edgeworth had any reason.
It was four in the afternoon when he started laughing, uncontrollably, I didn’t understand it. “Uh, Miles you okay?” I asked, after calming himself a bit he put a hand to his forehead. “I thought I was finally over you.” He laughed more to himself, “What?” I asked, “Oh my god Wright, you aren’t this stupid honestly, I wanted you. So baldly. I spent so long trying to get over you…” “Oh.” “But you!” He suppressed another laugh, “You had to come drag me into this, purgatory! And wrapped your hands back around my neck!” His hands met my shoulders and I tried to scoot back on the couch. “W- what are you getting at Miles..?” I asked, he grabbed either side of my shirt collar. “I want more than your body. Be mine Phoenix, ease my uncertainty. Lay to rest my unease.” I looked him in the eye, he was serious, and definitely not insane. I looked him up and down, did I want this..? I met his eyes again, hit eyes.. I thought about all we’ve been through, no questions asked. I did. I took him to bed again.
MORNING
I woke up and immediately began breathing hard, he was still there! and still asleep against me. I rolled my head to look at the clock, it was nearly noon, it was over. I debated waking him, but decided not to, he deserves to rest. So I just held him, not daring to go back to sleep.
