Chapter 1: Space

Chapter Text

It was past midnight, but time seemed to refuse to pass. It was like that whenever there wasn't a challenge that could seep up the rest of the day.
It wasn't too bad, though. Especially night. Black Hole kind of loved nighttime. It gave him an odd sort of peace that could only be achieved from the dim hours of 10:00 PM to the very last seconds that just grazed the limit of dawn, especially when you were a being that wasn't all too affected by sleepiness. Most of the other contestants were asleep, including the rest of Death P.A.C.T.
Even with how much he enjoyed this time period, he felt awfully lonely, especially now when he was steadily running out of ways to actually make the hours of darkness better. He settled himself down on the yellow grass, emitting a dim glow that was the only source of light for yards. Everything was silent, and Black Hole couldn't tell whether it was good or bad.

Meanwhile, inside the hotel, Tree was having a rather unpleasant nightmare, and he was incapable of staying still.
5 minutes passed, and he woke up on the hard, cold floor, gasping for breath after chaotically tumbling from the warmth of his blanketed bed. "Ouch..." He groaned, rubbing his head as a few leaves fluttered to the ground in the process. "All just a dream, Tree, all just a dream." He muttered to himself, before slipping out the door. He was smart enough to know that after such a nightmare, he wouldn't be able to go back to sleep.
As he left the hotel, a rather feeble light a couple meters away caught Tree's eye; none other than Black Hole himself.
What could he be doing out this late? Was he asleep? Do black holes sleep? The former wondered, but even with all these questions he casually strolled over to Black Hole, laying down next to him.
"Oh!" Black Hole was mildly surprised as he registered Tree's existence. "Hi, Tree. What're you doing out so late? Shouldn't you be asleep? I mean, I'm not telling you to leave or anything, but like-"
"Yeah, I had a nightmare." Tree murmured, and although he was still agitated by the aforementioned dream, Black Hole's lovely mellow voice helped him to chill out, at least for a bit. "It was really odd...actually, it was about you, in a way."
Black Hole was a bit stunned, but he remained silent, allowing Tree to continue.
"You were...going to visit me in my room, let's just say that. And...and you opened my door...and..."
"And what?"
"...And I was dead. Then you started breaking down, and it was terrifying. I was watching all of this from a third person perspective. It was weird, but it's all just a dream, so it likely doesn't mean anything."
"Wow. That's rough, sorry that happened. All just a dream, though, so I guess you shouldn't worry about it."
"Mhm. Yeah, thanks, Black Hole. I lo-appreciate it. I...I appreciate it." Tree smiled a little, trying to ignore the slight slip-up he had made. "Might go back inside, now, though."
"See you. Rest well, Tree."
"Of course."
Tree retreated back to the hotel. The dull light of Black Hole flashed against his eyes one last time, before he slammed the door behind him.
