Work Text:
Jax was not someone that usually believed in magic
Even when he was a little kid and his babysitter showed him magic tricks, he would just ask her to show him how it worked and they would play a little with it
His parent didn't let him have any typical childhood fantasy lie like other kids, their situation was not the greatest and their mental stability as first time parents even less great
Maybe they could have just put any effort to not look miserable and say ‘Yes son, magic is real, and if you wish more than every other kid in the world, one day you'll see with your own eyes’ or something like that
Did that sound magical, Is that something parents usually tell their kids? He's not an expert, ok?
But no, they would just say ‘magic won't help us’, sometimes softly and sometimes harshly
Santa Claus? Dad would bring either a T-shirt, a pair of socks or pants
Tooth fairy? He gave it to his mother and she gave him 10 bucks
Easter Bunny? Capitalism trying to sell overpriced bigger chocolate eggs
Magic was something unrealistic, something that you'd only see on TV
And yet…
He's standing in front of his room's window, looking at the city with worry
A voice speaks in his mind, it does that every few seconds, the same words, but more desperate every time
Sky is in trouble, go help him!
The first time it was weird, he was laying in bed, playing some crappy addictive mobile games when it suddenly appeared
He was clearly confused but brushed it off, ‘it was probably the wind’ he thought and then continued doing what he was doing
But then it happened again
And again
And again
And again
It wasn't a random thought, it felt different, it was a perfectly clear voice that never changed volume no matter where he was standing
It wasn't his dad because he was out on a business trip
It wasn't his mom because she was working at the bar
It wasn't anything that could be explained easily
“Who are you?” he asked, looking everywhere in his room
Sky is in trouble, go help him!
“What does that even mean?!” He shouted
Sky is in trouble, go help him!
“Answer me!” he shouted again, with his hands clenched into fists “What's wrong with Sky, what do you want from him”
Sky is in trouble, go help him!
And so it continued for a long while
Jax asked a million things, and the voice would just repeat the same thing
So Jax decided to stop asking and just listen to what it said
He grabbed his phone and opened Sky's contact to send a message
Jax: hey doofus, whatchu doin
He waited for a bit, the voice screaming directly into his ear
Ten minutes passed and Sky didn't respond
Sky is in trouble, go help him!
He tried calling next, four times, Sky never answered
Jax felt something, a feeling in his belly that just screamed that something was clearly wrong
He probably should have felt that when the sourceless voice appeared
But that's was not important, what's important was going to Sky's house to see if he was alright
He grabbed his phone, some cash, his keys and a flashlight, before storming out of the apartment and into the rainy night
He ran for a while, slipping a few times but immediately recovering and running again, the voices never stopped screaming directly into his brain
After like half an hour later of running, he finally found the place he was looking for
He stopped to catch his breath and then walked forwards and stopping in front of the door
“Please answer, please answer, please answer” he murmured while reaching out to it
But before he could do that, the door opened, revealing a skinny bunny with a few bruises holding a suitcase “Jax?” He asked tiredly, lifting his head a little to look at the fox
Sky is in trouble, go help him!
Jax looked closely, he noticed the horrible state of Sky's fur, the marks on his neck and how he was holding his side
He was shocked, and he didn't even try to hide it “Sky… oh god, what happened?” He took a step forwards and grabbed Sky's shoulders, causing the bunny to flinch
Sky is in trouble, go help him!
They moved out of the doorframe and walked to a nearby park to shelter themselves from the rain
The voice never stopped, and now that Sky was with him, he could see why
Sky is in trouble, go help him!
“Again, please tell me what happened” he pleaded while he helped his friend sit on the toy house's floor before sitting in front of him
Sky didn't have much of a reaction besides a little flinch, he looked tired
His blue eyes locked into Jax's, his sclera red from crying “i don't wanna be here…” escaped from his lips
Jax looked at him confused “we can't go to other place right now, the rain will stop soon, let's just wait” he looked inside his pockets to see if he had any candy that he stole and forgot to eat, but there was nothing
“That's not what I meant…” he clarified “I want to move” he said, which made Jax almost choke on air
“What?!” He shouted, and then immediately regretted it when he saw Sky cover himself “sorry…”
“I… I don't want to live here anymore… I don't want to be in the same place as him” he said while he looked down with his arms hugging himself
Sky is in trouble, go help him!
Jax moved closer and wrapped his arms around the bunny to calm him down “it's okey, he's not here anymore, he can't do anything”
Sky hugged him back and both began to cry, something they did a lot “thank you, Jax”
“Your welcome, furball” he let go and then opened the door of the toy house before stepping out into the rain “come on, let's go to my apartment”
Sky looked at him confused “wouldn't that be a burden to your parents?”
Jax laughed “we're not staying, idiot”
The voice in his head disappeared completely
“I'm going with you”

It's been six years since that night, and now, Jax was laying on his bed, playing the same shitty mobile game as that night
“We have a great console with awesome games and you play those games?”
He looked at the bedroom's door, Sky was lying against the doorframe with two cups of coffee
“They are addictive, and a bit fun”
Sky walked to the bed and gave Jax one of the cups “your job is to make the game's art, with that bad taste i might have to fire you”
“You wouldn't dare”
“I would”
“Nuh uh”
“Yuh uh”
They both continued for a while
After that fateful nights, they moved to one of Sky's friend's house, and they stayed there for two years before they moved to an apartment together
Sky started working as a mailman along with Red and Jax found a job at a pawn shop, where he met his new… friend… Zeb
And not too long ago they decided to make their own indie game
Well… it was Sky's and Red's idea, but Jax found it fun and thought it was the perfect opportunity to go back to art after six years of not doing graffiti
Everything has been going great the last few years, and Jax would not trade it for anything
“I do have good taste! I decided to dye my hair green, I swear when you see it your mouth will crash against the floor, it'll be sick!” he joked and took a sip of his coffee
“Not this again…” Sky groaned “we've been telling you, green would look awful on you”
“You are just jealous because you looked horrible with blue hair”
“Bitch, I looked fantastic”
“pfff, you looked like the average 2009 emo myspace teen” he almost spat his coffee
“C- Completely intensional!” he shouted, his face completely red
They both laughed, one more than the other, and then the laughter began to slowly become a comfortable silence
They both drank their coffee, Sky rested his head on Jax's shoulder and Jax rested his head on Sky's
The silence eventually disappeared when Jax asked a simple question
“So what's with you and that wolf guy?” He asked
Sky immediately choked on his coffee, but then tried to act natural, horribly
“What do you mean what's up with us?”
Jax snorted “c'mone it was obvious” he started counting with his fingers “you always end up delivering things late because you talk with him for hours, everytime you talk to him your face declares war on tomatoes” he lowered his hand and pointed his index finger towards Sky, who was a blushing mess “and i won't forget that time you two were sleeping together on the couch” he said with a smirk
Sky looked at Jax, stammering, trying to find the right words “well uh, you see, the thing is, eh…” Jax looked at him with amusement
He took a very deep breath
“And what about you, then?” He asked, and Jax's smirk immediately evaporated
“What about me?”
“Don't play dumb” Sky said with a mischievous grin “Zeb?”
With only that name, Jax's was left in the same state Sky was just a moment ago, like a shotgun shot his at his heart
Sky laughed “it's ok, i won't tell him, i'm sure he'll beat you to it” he joked before getting hit on the face by a pillow
He left soon after to go get some groceries, which was a clear code that meant ‘i'll go to Leon's workplace’
Jax told him good luck and then went back to bed
Leon…
He met him before…
Or at least he feels sure that he did
His voice, he's 99% sure that it was the same voice he heard that night six years ago
But how was that possible? He sounded exactly the same, not a single day older
But Leon was 26 years old, there was no way he sounded exactly the same six years ago
And why would Leon talk to him about someone that he apparently just met, and in such a strange way
He thought about it for years
There was no normal explanation about it
No, it wasn't a teen's imagination
It wasn't an hallucination either
No matter what explanation he tried to conjure, none would make him 100% sure
For now, he would sleep a bit and then he would ask Leon the next day
But despite the mysteries surrounding the weird magical voice, he was honestly glad it appeared
If it hadn't, god knows what would have happened to Sky, would they still be together in the present?
But nothing happened, they were fine
And that made Jax happy
