Work Text:
It had been a perfectly normal morning up until now as far as Pete was concerned. He and Billy had made their way into work, chatting as they always did on their commute, and settled themselves in for a quiet day of sorting through half-baked ideas for super-scientist gadgets. The only indicator that something may be off was a faint rumbling, not even distinct enough to be pinpointed as a cause for concern. Only when it had suddenly grown much, much , louder had either of them really noticed it— and by then it was already much too late.
Something came crashing in through one of the walls— the one that was visible when the big ‘V’ in the lobby was broken- sending dust and rubble flying through the air. Pete was knocked from his chair by the gust of air that came in with it— falling ass first onto the ground— as some sort of massive machine came into view. The telltale sound of Billy’s footsteps echoed through the basement lab as he hurried his way over to Pete.
“Are you okay? What happened?” He kneeled in front of the taller man, firmly planting his hands on his shoulders and scanning to see if there was any obvious damage done.
“‘M fine, but I have NO clue what the hell just happened.” Before either Pete or Billy could think of the answer, it strode into the room and interrupted them with a very characteristic, haughty voice.
“Why, hello there Quizboy.”
Billy whipped his head around, still holding onto one of Pete’s shoulders but angling the rest of his body towards the voice so as to look at it’s owner properly, “St. Cloud? What the hell are you doing here?”
“You outbid me last night so I’ve decided to ruin your morning.” Pete groaned, already exhausted, as Pei Wei stepped into view.
“I do hope our entrance hasn’t already driven your albino over the edge,” he added on— clearly not hoping for any such thing— looking over Billy’s shoulder at Pete.
“For the last time, I am not his Albino.”
“He’s my partner.” Billy says, exasperated.
“Yes, I’m well aware. Your right hand man, ironically enough,” he paused to giggle at his own joke, “seeing as you don’t even have one. A right hand, that is.” Billy rolls his eyes.
“No, I mean…” Billy pauses, trying to find a less juvenile way to explain. He fails. “He’s my boyfriend.”
“... oh.”
“What? Are you homophobic or something?” Pete chimes in.
“No… not at all. I simply need to go and rethink a few things. I was not aware your connection was quite that deep. I could exploit this in a myriad of fascinating ways.” St. Cloud was already turning around and mumbling the rest to himself after the word ‘No’ had passed his lips. He turned back toward the lab for one final address. “Farewell Quizboy… and Phantom. We shall meet again, soon.” And with that he left, Pei Wei bowing and leaving after him swiftly.
“Well at least he referred to me by name this time.”
“I… guess?”
